QUESTIONNAIRE

RIGHT TO LIFE

Under what circumstances should an elective abortion be allowed?

I am pro-life, and was active in the movement in college. As the Supreme Court made clear, this is a state decision, given differences of opinion on this contentious issue across regions. The abortion law in NC sets reasonable limits on elective abortion and should be a model for the nation: elective abortions allowed within the first trimester (12 weeks), exceptions for rape and incest (20 weeks) and fetal abnormalities (24 weeks); No limitation if the mother's life is at risk.

Chemical abortion drugs should meet essential safety standards (such as in-person consultation with a medical doctor) and require reporting to gather evidence on reactions and outcomes.

Strongly Agree

As was pointed out during the hearings on NC's abortion law, risks such as an ectopic pregnancy, make in-person consultation with regard to such drugs imperative.

I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.

Strongly Disagree

Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).

Agree

Planned Parenthood should not be provided taxpayer funds for performing abortions. However, the other services provided: preventing pregnancy and assisting women, men and couples with achieving their desired number and spacing of children, are important community services. The emphasis of Planned Parenthood should be on preventing unwanted pregnancies in the first instance, as a means to reducing the number of abortions, not providing abortion assistance.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

Under what circumstances can government close churches?

The right of all Americans to assemble and worship freely makes America unique and exceptional. Under the First Amendment, there must be a "clear and present danger" or an "imminent incitement of lawlessness," before the government is allowed to restrict this basic right. As we saw during the COVID crisis, governmental power in this area was misused. Churches should rarely -- if ever -- be closed.

Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.

Strongly Disagree

My heart breaks for the poor cakemaker in Colorado, who has seen his business and reputation sullied, and his finances drained by multiple lawsuits brought by a woke culture that targeted him, insisting America abide by their beliefs.

Should religious schools which accept state funds be allowed to only admit families and students who agree to adhere to their statement of faith?

Yes

NATIONAL SECURITY

The Chinese Communist Party poses serious military, cyber security, intellectual property, and global economic threats to the United States.

Strongly Agree

By its words and deeds, the Chinese Communist Party has made clear its intention to overtake the United States economically and militarily.

Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?

Yes. Israel is our strongest and most important ally in a region of radical militants intent on destroying Western civilization. On October 7th the world saw Hamas terrorists murder over 1,000 innocent men, women, and children. Since then, Hamas has continued to shoot rockets at civilian targets in Israel. Those same terrorists that want to wipe Israel off the map want the same fate for America. It is very important that we help Israel defend itself and fight anti-semitism here in America.

HEALTHCARE

What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D) Taxpayer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be defunded.

I lean towards "C," however, I'm also realistic that Obamacare, which was not overturned when the Republicans were in charge, is here to stay. We need to ensure all government medical insurance programs are run efficiently and eliminate fraud, waste and abuse. Given our country's current, dire fiscal circumstances (e.g., $31 trillion in debt and concerns regarding the solvency of the Medicare trust), we need leadership that will address rising healthcare costs.

Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?

Government should ensure foreign persons entering the country are not bringing in infectious diseases. The recent COVID crisis showed that government-mandated vaccinations led to job and learning losses, a mistake not to be repeated.

ECONOMY

Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.

Strongly Agree

As an executive, I recognize the importance of some regulation of certain industries for the protection of our economy, workers and consumers. However, excessive government regulation may be the single greatest barrier to American prosperity. Biden has passed more regulations -- and Executive Orders -- than Obama. One study estimates the cost per household as of the end of 2022 at $10,000. Our state's focus needs to be on creating jobs and lowering costs for families, not over-regulation.

What is your position on the minimum wage?

Raising the minimum wage, like states such as NY and CA, raises costs for consumers and discourages business investment -- particularly small businesses. NC families deserve a livable wage that is set by the free market, not government.

Should environmental and social issues, like ESG (environmental, social, and governance) ratings, be used as criteria in deciding where to invest public monies?

No

Corporate executives and fund managers should stay out of politics. They have fiduciary responsibilities to their shareholders and investors, which don't extend to the world at large. Any fund manager of NC funds that uses such ratings should be replaced.

EDUCATION

The state should fund education by allowing dollars to follow the child through programs which protect parents' freedom to choose their child's school – public, private, or homeschool.

Strongly Agree

I fully support School Choice and the new NC law expanding the highly-successful Opportunity Scholarship program.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY

I support redirecting funds from police departments to community programs.

Strongly Disagree

Rather than "defund" the police, I believe we should "fully fund" the police. Citizens in the most crime-ridden parts of our cities deserve a fully-staffed and visible police force working to deter crime. Community groups also play an important role in helping to change the culture of violence within communities -- particularly among the young. They also can help free up police resources in non-violent situations.

2ND AMENDMENT

What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?

I fully support the rights of qualified, law-abiding citizens to own guns. Current laws requiring background checks before purchasing a firearm should apply to all gun sales and be enforced. More needs to be done to keep guns out of the hands of children and mentally-ill persons. Local law enforcement in our major cities should work with federal agencies to get illegal, unregistered guns off the streets.

ABOUT YOU

What do you think is the general purpose of government?

Provide for national security. Reasonably regulate those industries that impact our economy and protect workers and consumers.

Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.

No

Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.

No

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?

Conservative

VALUES

Taxpayer funds should be used to provide gender transition services.

Strongly Disagree

No healthcare diagnosis or treatment, whether mental, reproductive, or otherwise, should be given to a child without first receiving written consent from the parent unless an emergency situation arises risking immediate death.

Agree

Children are the most vulnerable members of society and must be protected from abuse, including gender ideology, grooming, and bodily mutilation.

Strongly Agree

Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.

Neutral

While I believe marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union; God has also given man freewill to make choices in life. If gay consenting adults, of their own free will choose to marry, that's an exercise of their freedom with which the government should not interfere. It's also the law, under decisions of our Supreme Court and federal law. And the law needs to be respected.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I'm Catholic and a Christian, who was raised by parents (both still living and married for nearly 68 years), who instilled in me and my siblings a sense of right and wrong, the importance of honesty, conservatism in act and word, a good education, hard-work, and most-importantly family. I try to live my life by Christ's example, with kindness and generosity towards all.

ELECTIONS AND VOTING

Voting absentee by mail ballot should be limited to those meeting at least one of the following criteria: 1) 65 years of age or older on Election Day, 2) sick or disabled, 3) expecting to give birth within three weeks before or after Election Day, or 4) confirmed to be absent from the county of registration during voting.

Strongly Agree

Election integrity is critically important. As General Counsel of MeckGOP, I spearheaded an effort to put 30 new Republican poll judges in place and increased Republican poll judges approved by the BOE 11% overall. This was a first for MeckGOP. While I have a greater degree of confidence in activities at the polls, absentee ballots remain an area with the least amount of transparency and greatest risk of fraud.

EQUALITY

Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?

No. Incidents of racially-motivated criminal activity are relatively rare and usually occur at the hands of mentally-unstable individuals. A recent study of the US military commissioned by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin found "no evidence that the number of violent extremists in the military is disproportionate to ... the US as a whole." Like the military, most Americans -- including myself -- have a zero-tolerance policy for racism.

I agree with Critical Race Theory (CRT) which asserts that the institutions in the United States are fundamentally racist.

Strongly Disagree

I believe such theories are divisive and harmful to America, as they divide individuals into classes of "oppressors" and "oppressed," based solely on one's skin color. Unfortunately, there are too many people who try to use race to divide us. Whether it is the media trying to drive ratings, or disingenuous politicians trying to win elections, people focus too often on what divides us rather than what unites us. I will advocate for conservative policies that help all communities prosper.

Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.

Strongly Agree

In the case of women's sports, this is just common sense fairness. With regard to access to women's spaces, it's a matter of safety.

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Which comes closest to your view? (Select all that apply) A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost. C) Stricter environmental laws undermine U.S. energy independence and deter development of reliable electricity sources. D) Climate change is real and requires urgent policy action.

C. With it's poorly-named "Inflation Reduction Act," the Biden Administration is imposing its Green New Deal climate agenda on all Americans, including NC. We need only look to the state of California to see what the result on consumers will be: Gas in California remains stubbornly above $5/gallon; consumers are being forced to give up their gas-stoves and gas-powered vehicles, and utility costs are soaring. The government does a poor job of managing energy, leave that to the private sector.
