EDUCATION
What is the function of the local school board?
The primary function of the school board is to work and serve the people that elected them. In Virginia, the school board plays a crucial role in the management and administration of public education. The functions of the local school board include the following: Policy Making: The school board establishes policies and regulations for the school division based on state laws and regulations. These policies cover various aspects of education, including curriculum, student conduct, and staff guidelines. Budget Approval: The school board approves the school division's budget, which includes funding for salaries, educational programs, facilities, and other operational expenses. The budget is typically proposed by the school division superintendent and is subject to approval by the school board members. Hiring and Evaluating Superintendents: The school board hires and evaluates the superintendent of the school division. The superintendent is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the schools within the division. Curriculum Development: The school board, often in collaboration with educators, parents and experts, determines the curriculum standards and educational programs for the schools in the division. This includes decisions about textbooks, teaching methods, and educational goals. School Facilities: The school board oversees the planning, construction, and maintenance of school facilities. They make decisions regarding the building of new schools, renovations, and other infrastructure projects. Community Engagement: School board members act as a link between the community and the school division. They hold public meetings, listen to concerns and feedback from parents, teachers, and community members, and represent all of the community's interests in the school system. Legal Compliance: The school board ensures that the school division operates in compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Student Services: They may be involved in decisions related to student services and special education programs.
Who should have the authority to set curriculum and determine resources used in those curricula?
In collaboration with educators, parents, the Virginia Department of Education, and other experts, the school board should set curriculum standards and educational programs for the division under applicable state laws and regulations. It includes decisions regarding educational goals, teaching methods, teacher training, materials, and textbooks.
When should parents be restricted from speaking in school board meetings?
Parents should always have First Amendment rights to speak in school board meetings. The school board may set a reasonable "time and place" for the parents to speak at school board meetings and allow for reasonable accommodations.

Which more closely matches your view of America's founding principles? A) Liberty and equality. B) Slavery and racism.
A) Liberty and Equality. America was founded on the idea that all people are created equal and have fundamental rights such as liberty, free speech, freedom of religion, and due process of law.
What does "equity in education" mean to you?
Equity creates inequity. Access to all educational opportunities must be foundational for the success of all students.
Written parental consent (opt-in) must be obtained before students are taught courses such as Comprehensive Sex Ed (CSE) or Social Emotional Learning (SEL).
Strongly Agree
The loss of local control in education is too high a price to pay in exchange for federal dollars.
Strongly Agree
Parents are the ultimate authority in their child’s education and should be able to freely pursue whatever educational options they deem best for their child.
Strongly Agree
School boards are accountable to parents and taxpayers.
Strongly Agree
Do you believe students should have access to materials that graphically depict and describe sexual acts?
No
All print and digital material available or presented to students should be easily accessible for public review.

Yes
VALUES
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
As a Christian and a Catholic, I believe God is all-powerful, all-knowing, and unchanging. I hold a Biblical worldview where every person is valued.
I support allowing public high school students to participate in athletic competition based on the gender with which they identify instead of biological sex.
Strongly Disagree
No school official should be involved in the sexual transitioning of a student, including the use of alternative names and pronouns.
Strongly Agree
No healthcare diagnosis or treatment, whether mental, reproductive, or otherwise, should be given to a child without first receiving written consent from the parent.
Strongly Agree
Who is responsible for teaching sexual education to children, and what is the appropriate age when it should be taught?
The parent has the primary responsibility for teaching sexual education to their children. The appropriate age is determined by the cognitive and developmental level of the child as determined by the parents.
If you support the teaching of Sex Ed, please answer the following question: Sexual education should include these topics (list all that apply and add your own, if needed) -- Physical and emotional health outcomes; contraceptive methods; consent; abstinence; sexual orientation and gender identity; human anatomy/the reproductive system; abortion methods and side effects; stages of pregnancy and fetal development; sex acts and pleasures of sex
