What is the function of the local school board?

In my opinion, the school board is there to oversee and govern the public schools within their jurisdiction. School boards are there to establish policy, provide budget oversight, hiring and evaluation of key personnel, curriculum approval, advocacy and community engagement.

Please list in order the following priorities in relation to the role of a K-12 public school (omitting any that do not apply): Mathematics, Information Technology, Science, Political Activism, Personal Finances, Gender Identity, Physical Fitness, American History, Critical Race Theory, Language Arts, Art & Music, Vocational Learning, Sexuality, Foreign Language, Social Emotional Learning

1. Reading/Language Arts 2. Mathematics 3. Science 4. Art & Music 5. Physical Fitness/PE 6. American History 7. Information Technology 8. Personal Finances 9. Vocational Learning 10. Foreign Language 11. Social Emotional Learning. Topics such as Political Activism, Gender Identity, Critical Race Theory, Sexuality, and Political topics in general, tend to be contentious and should not be part of the core curriculum in K-12 schools in my opinion. These topics could possibly be addressed in other discussions or extracurricular activities, but they should not be a part of the foundational academic curriculum. The priorities I listed above focus on academic subjects, personal development, and physical well-being which I think are necessary in public education.

What does "equity in education" mean to you?

"Equity in education" to me refers to the principle of ensuring that all students have access to the resources, support, and opportunities they need to succeed academically and develop their full potential, regardless of their background, socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, gender, disability, or other characteristics. It is about creating a fair and just educational system that acknowledges and addresses the disparities and barriers that exist in traditional education.

Parents are the ultimate authority in their child’s education and should be able to freely pursue whatever educational options they deem best for their child.

Strongly Agree

Parents play a critical role in the success or failure of a child’s educational development. As a parent, if there is something being taught that I do not want my child receiving I would express that thought to the school administrators and board in the hopes that they would take my concerns under advisement.

VALUES

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I am a Christian wife and mother who believes in Christ and values free will. I have a strong faith in Jesus Christ and I maintain an active spiritual and prayer life. My family is central to my life, and I prioritize Christian values in our home. I'm involved in my church community, but I also believe in respecting others' choices while upholding my own faith. I see hope and grace in God's plan, and I view the Bible as a source of guidance in my life. However, this does not stop me from loving everyone and believing in free will or the right to make a choice that works for others and their families even if it is contrary to my beliefs.

Who is responsible for teaching sexual education to children, and what is the appropriate age when it should be taught?

I believe parents bear the primary responsibility for educating their children about sex, but schools should complement this by offering age-appropriate sex education.

If you support the teaching of Sex Ed, please answer the following question: Sexual education should include these topics (list all that apply and add your own, if needed) -- Physical and emotional health outcomes; contraceptive methods; consent; abstinence; sexual orientation and gender identity; human anatomy/the reproductive system; abortion methods and side effects; stages of pregnancy and fetal development; sex acts and pleasures of sex

Sex education in K-12 should be comprehensive and age-appropriate. Kindergarten to Grade 2 (Ages 5-7): Body Awareness: Like the basic understanding of anatomy (proper names for body parts). Personal Boundaries: Recognizing and respecting personal boundaries and the concept of consent in everyday interactions. In 5th grade (9-10), cover puberty or more of an introduction to the physical and emotional changes associated with puberty. Reproduction - providing a basic understanding of human reproduction, including male and female reproductive systems. Personal Hygiene and the importance of hygiene during puberty. Focus on respect and consent more to build on the concept of consent and respect for others' boundaries. In middle school (6-8th) - cover puberty and reproduction. I’d suggest more on puberty, menstrual cycles, and sperm production. In high school (9-12) - cover STD’s and how they are contracted, respect and boundaries, and parent/child communication.

Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?

I'm running for the school board trustee position because I believe in a future where every child receives a quality education free from harassment and discrimination. Diversity is our strength, and I'm committed to celebrating it in our schools. I'll work to support teachers, invest in resources, and ensure a safe and inclusive environment where all students feel valued. My candidacy is simply about all the children in our community, not politics, which I do not believe have a place in our schools. I am connected to this community and have 3 children on 3 different campuses (not to mention the countless other babies that I did not birth) whom I intend to encourage, uplift, and plainly look out for along with all the youth in this city to the best of my ability. I care for and love our kids, and I have no ulterior motives other than to serve this beautiful, growing community.
