What is the function of the local school board?

The primary function of a school board is to provide strategic goals and priorities for the school district. The board has an enormous financial responsibility in everything from budget oversight to setting the tax rate for the local community. The board sets policies, hires and fires the leader of the district, sets bond priorities, and the list goes on. With all of that on the table, I believe we need the strongest leaders on local school boards we can find. Folks who have a wide variety of experiences that can best represent the desires of a local community to best serve our kids.

Who should have the authority to set curriculum and determine resources used in those curricula?

Voters in the State of Texas have and should retain the authority to set curriculum for our public schools.

When should parents be restricted from speaking in school board meetings?

Parents should NOT be restricted from speaking at school board meetings.

Liberty and equality. From the preamble of the Constitution: "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

What does "equity in education" mean to you?

To be honest I have no idea what that means. The word equity used to mean the quality of being fair and impartial. That words seems too mean something much different in 2023. For me, I want to see a public school system that ensures every student has the opportunity to succeed and fulfill their God given potential.

I am a local father, a leader and a veteran. I look forward to the opportunity to serve this community on the School Board.


2ND AMENDMENT

Teachers who are licensed to carry should be allowed to carry guns at school.

I look forward to having this conversation with other elected leaders and law enforcement in the months to come. As a military veteran with two combat deployments I can say with some credibility that the training required to carry a firearm, especially in a school, must be significant and recurring. A teacher with a license alone, in my opinion, would lack the training needed to be an effective responder to an active shooter scenario and could do more harm than good.

Under what circumstances (if any) should schools be allowed to require vaccinations?

This is a decision best left up to parents and their physicians.
