What is the function of the local school board?

To oversee the management of the public school, hire superintendent, collaborate to create goals for both the district and the superintendent while monitoring the progress of those goals, adopt a tax rate each fiscal year, adopt an annual budget, monitor district finances, ensure district accounts are audited annually, publish and share and EOY financial report for the district, appraise the superintendent annually,

Who should have the authority to set curriculum and determine resources used in those curricula?

The state of Texas adopts curriculum standards to be used in state schools and approves multiple instructional materials that local districts may adopt. The materials must meet 50% of the TEKS and 100% of the ELPS for student use. Local education agencies should and do have the right to select instructional materials that have been approved by the SBOE.

In the case that a parent becomes violent, inappropriate, or threatening while speaking, they should be escorted out.

Liberty & Equality

What does "equity in education" mean to you?

Equity in education- equitable and excellent outcomes for all students can be achieved when their students’ historical, cultural, and societal contexts, embrace student assets through instruction, and foster relationships with students, families, and communities.

Written parental consent (opt-in) must be obtained before students are taught courses such as Comprehensive Sex Ed (CSE) or Social Emotional Learning (SEL).

Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?

I am the only candidate who has both business experience and extensive experience in education from the campus level to the state level. As an educator who started my career in Midlothian ISD, I believe that every student deserves a quality education, where first and foremost, their learning needs are met. In addition, they should have access to the best and brightest teachers in the state of Texas. Teachers deserve to be supported and appreciated, which will enhance creativity, improve retention, and raise student outcomes. A positive district climate is critical to achieving success for everyone. As a Board Trustee, I will work diligently to influence positive outcomes in our district and make responsible, fiscally conservative decisions.I’d love to hear from you, so please reach out at dawson4schoolboard@gmail.com if you’d like to arrange a time to chat!

2ND AMENDMENT

Teachers who are licensed to carry should be allowed to carry guns at school.

Strongly Disagree

Having a license to carry a gun and carrying a gun at a school are two very different things. Teachers who wish to do so, would need extensive and different training than what is part of a current license to carry course.

Schools DO require vaccinations.
