OTHER INFORMATION
QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?
I am personally pro-life and believe that life should be supported from conception to natural death. All life is important. As a representative of a diverse community, I would support a heartbeat bill with very limited exceptions such as rape, incest or the life of the mother.
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).
Strongly Agree
I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.
Strongly Disagree
All life has value.
ECONOMY
What changes, if any, should be made to the tax code?
Tax codes should be simplified. To attract people to Iowa, we should consider elimination of income taxes and instead utilize a universal consumption/sales tax. Taxes should be minimized and any taxes collected should be prudently spent. Small businesses that have annual sales less than $500,000 should be able to pay their sales taxes quarterly.
What government spending would you reduce in order to balance the budget?
All spending should be reviewed annually to determine if spending is producing the desired results. I would also focus reviews on any expenditures that favor particular interests (ex. specific energy industries) or business ventures.
Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.
Strongly Disagree
College is not a path that is right for all people. Instead, we should encourage whatever path makes sense for each person to contribute to his/her community. This includes supporting trade schools, apprenticeships, on-the-job training, and agriculture in addition to college. However, it is not the government's responsibility to fund education beyond high school. We should encourage exploration of all industries and learning options during K-12 public education.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.
Strongly Disagree
Freedom to exercise religion is a first amendment right, which shall not be infringed.
Under what circumstances can government close churches?
There are NO circumstances under which government can interfere with our first amendment rights including freedom of assembly and freedom to establish or exercise religion.
HEALTHCARE
What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D)Tax-payer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be de-funded.
C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. Medicare and Medicaid should be limited to U.S. citizens with a needs-based eligibility that would consider both income and net worth.
Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?
Vaccinations should not be required under any circumstances.
NATIONAL SECURITY
What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of Islamic terrorism?
All forms of terrorism, both foreign and domestic, must be charged and punished according to our existing laws. Laws that have been abused must be challenged to the highest courts and be overturned by courageous judiciaries.
I support the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement to pressure Israel to withdraw from occupied territories, remove the separation barrier in the West Bank, allow full equality for Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel, and promote the rights of Palestinian refugees.
Strongly Disagree
IMMIGRATION
The U.S. should do more to physically secure the southern border.
Strongly Agree
Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?
The United States has always been a nation of immigrants. It is also a nation of laws. Our laws must be followed. We are a very generous people, however our resources are limited. We have reasonable immigration laws that must be followed to ensure that we can support our citizens and those who follow our laws to become citizens. It is NOT humane to encourage immigration that is not done in accordance with our laws. Our laws must also be strengthened to ensure that those laws are not abused.
EDUCATION
I support school choice, including voucher programs, tax credits, charter schools, private schools, and home schools.
Strongly Agree
No parent should be forced to send their children to failing schools. Each child is entitled to an excellent education and competition is needed to improve performance. Parents should be involved in what is taught. We must work together to find the right solutions that encourage the retention/acquisition of exceptional educators. We must also work within our communities to encourage the participation of retirees, retired military, parents...all citizens in the education of our children.
VALUES
Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality which is necessary for our system of limited government.
Strongly Agree
Morality is required to have a civil society. I believe that Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior and I encourage others to seek out Jesus Christ. My Christian faith teaches that we must love our neighbors as ourselves and help those in need. We are fallible and must look to a higher power than ourselves. Ultimately, people must understand right from wrong. We need to stand up for what is right, not what is easy. We must also enforce our laws uniformly when they are broken.
I support adding gender identity as a specially protected class in non-discrimination laws.
Disagree
We must stop putting people into identity groups. This only breeds separation, division and resentment. We must love and respect all people, period. When we see injustice, we must stand up in defense of others and condemn bad behavior.
Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition
Neutral
Marriage is a religious institution...in all religions, not just Christianity. Government should not be involved in defining marriage. I am a Christian and believe in marriage between a man and a woman. I love all people including those who have beliefs that are different than mine.
I agree with Critical Race Theory (CRT) which asserts that the institutions in the United States are fundamentally racist.
Strongly Disagree
This is patently false. We are not a racist nation. We must only look at the continued desire for those from all countries, nationalities, races to come to the United States and be citizens of this great country. We must learn from the mistakes of the past to ensure we do not repeat them. Our history books tend to be skewed toward the views of the authors, so we must seek out varying opinions to see the full picture of history.
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I believe that Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior. I encourage others to seek out Jesus Christ. I respect everyone's right to make the spiritual and religious decisions that are meaningful in their lives. My belief in God guides my decisions and knowing right v. wrong. Integrity and honesty are paramount in my daily life.
ELECTIONS AND VOTING
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Strongly Disagree
Voting is the most sacred institution in our country. People around the world fight to have this right. It is reserved for our citizens and we should do everything in our power to secure the integrity of our elections. Identification is required for numerous activities in our daily lives...flying on airplanes, checking in to hotels, obtaining government assistance, etc. Why would we ever consider our most important responsibility as citizens be less secure?
What laws would you propose to change present voting practices?
We need to eliminate the opportunities for programming errors to occur or bad actors to do harm. Electronics have no place in the most important and sacred activity in our Republic. We've seen examples just this summer in both Dekalb County, Georgia and Cherokee County, Kansas where electronics were completely wrong and losers turned out to be winners after paper ballots were counted by hand. The most concerning part of those cases was that both were discovered by chance. In the first case, a candidate's own precinct showed she didn't receive any votes, even though she knew that she and her husband cast votes. In the second, problems were discovered during a post-election audit that luckily required a county race be included and that was the race where errors were found. If our votes are not recorded or counted correctly, the will of the people is not being followed. Voting using paper ballots has worked for generations with reporting on election day. Using only paper ensures that citizens are involved and are able to verify and validate, with their own eyes, the results of elections on the night of the election. I support serialized, secure paper ballots. I question why we use secure paper for our checks, but not our ballots. Make election day a State or Federal holiday. Absentee ballots should be extremely limited to those who are truly UNABLE to vote on election day. There is no need for early in person voting as it limits full information being known prior to voting. Voting is a responsibility. It is not a convenience.
EQUALITY
Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?
No. We are not a racist society. People from all countries, races, religions continue to seek out opportunities in the United States every day. That would not be the case if we were "fundamentally" racist as many would like people to believe. Americans are good, kind and generous people.
Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.
Strongly Disagree
Absolutely not. No one should be taught that they are a victim and this is the only purpose that reparations serve. We are each our own person. We are not responsible for our past generations. We must look to the future, learn from the past and commit to not repeat mistakes.
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT
Which comes closest to your view? A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost.
A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. We have far too many laws and regulations. There are always unintended consequences that make it hard to do business efficiently. We should review all regulations on the books to determine what are critical to successful endeavors and which may have been instituted to favor particular interests. We must repeal laws/regulations that do not serve the people of Iowa.
I support the use of hydraulic fracking to extract oil and natural gas resources.
Strongly Agree
I believe in an "all of the above" strategy for energy production. We should be exploring new sources of energy, but not at the expense of energy security and independence. We should be building clean, advanced nuclear plants. The government should not be picking favorite energy sources. We should be ensuring that our communities have reliable and affordable energy. That involves supporting competition in our natural gas and electricity providers.
ABOUT YOU
What do you think is the general purpose of government?
Most importantly, government is in place to protect the rights endowed by our Creator. A government for the people, by the people creates the guardrails for society when self-government is not followed. Government must be limited and represent the will of the people. When the will of We the People is not being followed, it rests upon every one of us to stand up and get involved.
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Conservative
I am a constitutional conservative who believes we must get back to a government as intended by our Founders. A government for the people and by the people, where we all must step up and get involved. Government is not in place to provide for every need that a citizen may have. We must return to societies that look first to families, friends, neighbors, places of worship and the generosity of others to aid people in their times of need. Government should provide a hand up, not a hand out.
Please provide publicly available information, including interviews and media reports, validating your answer to the previous question (other than your website).
Did not answer
Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized in either civil or criminal court for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.
No
What else would you like voters to know about you, including your legislative priorities?
I believe in We the People and our Founders’ vision of a Republic governed by the people. I am a hard-working native Cedar Rapidian I decided to run for office when I became frustrated that a candidate was running completely unopposed. I do not believe in election by acclimation and I do not believe in professional politicians. I felt called to run for this office because all too often, we have left things to be handled by someone else. Future generations must have an opportunity to enjoy the freedoms that I have, but we must all step up to ensure that will be the case. I benefitted from one of the best public education systems in the country. I would like to return Iowa to that leadership position and help future generations receive excellent educations. We must work together to create legislation that enables parents' voices to be heard and be involved in their children's educations. That will involve creative solutions to ensure parents have choice while we work to attract and retain the best and brightest educators in our public schools. Competition makes the private sector flourish, encourages creativity and drives customer satisfaction for those products/services. Our public education systems should function no differently. Parents and children are the consumers of our education systems. I would also like to encourage more participation by citizens in our local and state governments. There should be no concern that an individual may lose their livelihood while they are called to serve the community and I would champion legislation to enable more citizens to participate in local and state government. If we are to be of the people and by the people, we need all people to be freely able to serve. I also believe that we should focus more PK-12 education on our founding documents and history. Younger generations need to understand what our country's founding was about and why the United States is so unique and is the best country in the world. We are a Republic, not a democracy. We each have rights "endowed by our Creator" that no person or government can take away. We must teach our children why vigorously defending and supporting these rights is critical to the success of our nation. In 1787 Benjamin Franklin was asked what type of government was formed for the United States. He succinctly responded, "A republic, if you can keep it." The United States Constitution is the oldest constitution in use today after being ratified in 1788 and it is as relevant today as it was more than 234 years ago.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY
Police officers should be personally immune from prosecution for conduct consistent with departmental policy (qualified immunity) while on duty.
Strongly Agree
No departmental policy should conflict with any laws. We must support and defend our law enforcement officers (LEOs) who courageously serve and protect our communities. The vilification of law enforcement that has taken place over the last several years has been skewed and unfair. While there are incidents that do not reflect the 99% of our dedicated LEOs, those incidents must be taken seriously and prosecuted. No officer should hesitate to do their job as they have been trained.
I support redirecting funds from police departments to mental health and community programs.
Strongly Disagree
Mental health programs must receive adequate funding, but not at the expense of adequate law enforcement funding. Mental health has been an issue all too often swept under the rug and not afforded the attention that it deserves. We have seen further deterioration of mental health since 2020 and we must address it vigorously. Communities must come together to provide attention and services to those suffering and their families as they struggle to cope.
2ND AMENDMENT
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
Law abiding citizens are not the problem. Guns are not the problem. Criminals are the problem. Mental health is the problem. We must enforce our laws and apply strict penalties to deter criminal behavior. We must encourage those who have or people who witness signs of mental health issues to seek assistance and not be criminalized for it. We must also remember that our country was founded because the government was out of control and went to war with it's people. We should not be naive to think that this couldn't happen again. Citizens must have the ability to protect themselves and their property from all threats.
Victims of gun violence should be able to sue firearms dealers and manufacturers.
Strongly Disagree
This is about a stigma with guns specifically. This question is not posed for those who are victims of stabbings.
