QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?
I believe abortion should be an option until week 16, and in cases of documented, confirmed danger to the mother or serious fetal abnormality after that.
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).
Strongly Disagree
Groups like Planned Parenthood provide many services besides abortion, and prevent more abortions than they cause. Defunding them just increases abortions especially dangerous ones.
I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.
Agree
Right to death should be provided in cases of terminal, incurable illness
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.
Agree
I agree. If your business is baking cakes, baking a cake has nothing to do with your own moral code. There are no gay cakes. As far as apartment rentals go, having a place to live is necessary to a person's safety and freedom. That basic right can't be denied on the whims or prejudices of others.
Under what circumstances can government close churches?
The government should be able to close churches if they are abusive and controlling to the point where people are effectively held prisoner by them, and also if they are advocating violent revolution.
NATIONAL SECURITY
What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of Islamic terrorism?
We already have by far the largest military in the world. What we are lacking is programs to reach out to those countries and create positive relations with them. The best way to stop radicalism is to reduce poverty. Sanctions do the opposite of that.
I support the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement to pressure Israel to withdraw from occupied territories, remove the separation barrier in the West Bank, allow full equality for Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel, and promote the rights of Palestinian refugees.
Disagree
I do not agree with all of Israel's actions but they are in situation of danger and must have the right to protect themselves.
HEALTHCARE
What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D)Tax-payer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be de-funded.
I believe the original Obamacare plan of basic government funded healthcare with the option of private care supplement would have worked very well given the chance. I have lived in two European countries and never had any problems with it, and it was way cheaper. There were no waits or restrictions.
Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?
It's a difficult question, but people should not be able to put others at risk because of their own feelings especially when they are easily demonstrable to be wrong. This should especially apply for healthcare workers that are around sick patients every day.
ECONOMY
What changes, if any, should be made to the tax code?
I believe the tax code needs to be returned to what it was at the end of Obama's term when the deficit was falling and the strength of the dollar increasing.
What government spending would you reduce in order to balance the budget?
We have ended two wars. It's unrealistic to think we wouldn't have a decrease in military budget due to that.
Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.
Agree
People should not be penalized for wanting to become educated, or be saddled with a lifetime of death, especially just because they didn't finish a very high paying degree.
IMMIGRATION
The U.S. should do more to physically secure the southern border.
Disagree
We already spend billions on border security and the more we build the more ways are found to get around it. Or more tragically the more people die just for wanting to come here and become productive residents. We need a reasonable immigration policy that doesn't criminalize people for wanting to work hard and pay taxes. They shouldn't have to jump through hoops our ancestors never did.
Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?
Wealthy immigrants to the US often didn't come by their wealthy in their country honestly. Many become in similar fraud once they are here. We need to welcome all types of valid immigrants but remember who our ancestors were - mostly poor people from lands torn by war, poverty and strife just like theirs.
EDUCATION
I support school choice, including voucher programs, tax credits, charter schools, private schools, and home schools.
Strongly Disagree
I always felt charter and magnet schools were a step towards privatization and weakening of our regular public schools. Public schools can have programs in them for gifted students, there's no reason to build separate schools. I feel the same about vouchers. Except in rare cases where there is no public school nearby, people that want to send their children to private schools and have the money should pay for it themselves, and not harm public schools by pulling their kids out.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY
Police officers should be personally immune from prosecution for conduct consistent with departmental policy (qualified immunity) while on duty.
Neutral
Yes, but no department policy allows officers to act with reckless disregard for the safety and lives of people they are entrusted to serve and protect. At that point they are no longer immune. American officers need to be better trained in situation deescalation and use of non-lethal force when possible. The idea that every shot has to be a kill shot is wrong in every way.
I support redirecting funds from police departments to mental health and community programs.
Neutral
I support increasing funding for all three. It's not either-or. We should commit funds to crime reduction, not just punishment and incarceration which does not appear to be a very good crime deterrent.
2ND AMENDMENT
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
I believe the Brady bill and Semi-Auto Assault Rifle Ban should not have been allowed to expire. If we continue sales of assault rifles they should be subject to a higher level of background checks than regular guns including mental health and history or violence and/or threats.
Victims of gun violence should be able to sue firearms dealers and manufacturers.
Neutral
Gun companies will make whatever guns they can sell at a profit. They would adapt to technologies like smart guns just like the auto industry had to adapt to safety standards after being forced to. The politicians are the ones that make the laws, not gun companies.
ABOUT YOU
What do you think is the general purpose of government?
Our democratically chosen government is ourselves, it is not some foreign occupying enemy as some would have us believe. The government needs to provide us safety, stability and a chance to live meaningful, productive lives. The 10th Amendment allows states to do things that are not forbidden in the constitution, and the people may set up things like Obamacare if that is their desire. There is no article preventing it.
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Lean Liberal
I come from a conservative background and still hold many of those principles, but as I have matured I realize that sometimes people do need help, and our society shouldn't be "sink or swim" for everyone. Not helping people that need it unfortunately also punishes their children, leading to a cycle of poverty, criminality and possibly more violence in the future.

Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized in either civil or criminal court for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.
No I have not.
What else would you like voters to know about you, including your legislative priorities?
I would like to help draft a new abortion law for Arizona, that protects the rights and safety of mothers, but takes into account how much earlier women can know if they are pregnant or not. I think four months for that (16 weeks) is enough time to make a decision, including in cases of sexual assault.
VALUES
Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality which is necessary for our system of limited government.
Disagree
There were some religious sounding words of solemnity in the declaration of independence, but the founding fathers were not all christians and some were avowed atheists and agnostics. They drew on many sources besides the Bible for our laws, and many laws in the Bible are not in our law for good reason.
I support adding gender identity as a specially protected class in non-discrimination laws.
Agree
Our constitution does not give us the right to discriminate against people for wanting to live as the opposite sex. That being said, I think any athlete taking sex hormones should not be competing in school or sanctioned amateur sports.
Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition
Strongly Disagree
The government needs to get its nose out of peoples' private business, especially as it relates to their choice of life partner.
I agree with Critical Race Theory (CRT) which asserts that the institutions in the United States are fundamentally racist.
Neutral
Since that was a graduate level university course the question is misleading. All children should receive education that includes a frank history of our mistakes as well as our triumphs, including slavery and maltreatment of minorities in this country to make sure it doesn't happen again. That should not include any child being told that their race is "inherently racist" which would obviously be discriminatory to them. Racism has existed throughout our history but not fundamental.
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I have both religious and secular beliefs, and serve on the vestry of my church as well as sing in the choir. I think the most important value is to love and try to help others.
ELECTIONS AND VOTING
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Agree
Despite all the claims, it has never been shown that people voting without ID led to any cases of fraud. Not everybody has access to their birth documents, especially if they lived in foster homes or come from broken families. They should not have their fundamental right to vote taken away due to that.
What laws would you propose to change present voting practices?
Measure 201 which received far more signatures than necessary to be on the November ballot, but was blocked by the Republican senate anyway contained many things which I agree with, and nothing that would increase election fraud in my opinion.
EQUALITY
Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?
Racist groups are a threat to our democracy and freedom. They were major players in the January 6th capitol riot and were working together with members of our government, so yes, I believe they are a serious threat to our domestic security.
Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.
Agree
I believe they should in cases where families had their homes seized or destroyed by racist riots in places like Oklahoma should be recompensed for those losses. As well as the California beaches that were returned and Native American lands that were stolen.
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT
Which comes closest to your view? A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost.
We can develop new technologies without necessarily shutting down all traditional sources of energy. I'd like to see natural gas used more, as well as solar and wind power. As technologies progress the old methods will gradually phase out by themselves.
I support the use of hydraulic fracking to extract oil and natural gas resources.
Disagree
I believe fracking has caused too much danger to the environment and may be harmful to local residents.
