QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?
Abortion, when allowed, should be safe and rare. Abortion should be banned when the fetus is viable, and not allowed after 10-12 weeks except in cases of a danger to the life of the mother, uncurable fetal deformity, rape or incest.
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).
Agree
The government should not be funding any side of the abortion question.
I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.
Strongly Disagree
I am opposed to euthanasia or allowing people to assist others in suicide, without exception.
ECONOMY
What changes, if any, should be made to the tax code?
In general terms the tax code should not be used as a devise by which the government promotes or discourages a certain behavior or particular policy. Taxation should be the method by which the government raises sufficient funds to pay its necessary expenses, burdening the poorest the least. Also, in my experience the wealthy do not mind being taxed at a greater rate than the poor as long as they believe the money is spent in a responsible fashion.
What government spending would you reduce in order to balance the budget?
The pension system in Illinois is unsustainable, but because of provisions in the Illinois Constitution and politics nobody can address the problem in a meaningful way. I believe a convention should be called, where no delegate could also be the current holder of a public office, to adopt an amendment to the Illinois Constitution to resolve the pension issue.
Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.
Disagree
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.
Strongly Disagree
Government cannot be involved in either prohibiting or establishing any particular religion or religious belief. This is a foundational principle of our system of government. However, nobody who provides goods or services to the public should be allowed to discriminate against anyone else based on that person’s race, sex, religion or national origin.
Under what circumstances can government close churches?
Never. Both the US and Illinois Constitutions are clear that government shall have absolutely nothing to do with religion. It is an institution that is absolutely protected from government interference under any circumstances.
HEALTHCARE
What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D)Tax-payer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be de-funded.
Both B and C to some extent. This is not a simple question. I believe all Americans should have equal access to quality healthcare, but that government intervention is rarely the best solution. How to best achieve that goal is something that requires a great deal of work and consideration.
Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?
I cannot think of any circumstance in which the government or any third-party should be allowed to make a health-care decision for any citizen.
NATIONAL SECURITY
What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of Islamic terrorism?
We should secure our southern border, as well as all borders. The expanded drone strike policies have proven counterproductive and even immoral. We should watch our foreign adversaries closely but only strike them if there is an actual imminent threat.
I support the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement to pressure Israel to withdraw from occupied territories, remove the separation barrier in the West Bank, allow full equality for Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel, and promote the rights of Palestinian refugees.
Disagree
No. I would work against the BDS movement through all legal/Constitutional means.
IMMIGRATION
The U.S. should do more to physically secure the southern border.
Strongly Agree
Absolutely. The current invasion of the southern border is destroying our country. We are being overrun with drugs and the Mexican cartels are abusing the immigrants and are even trafficking children. It must be stopped immediately.
Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?
Legal immigration must be allowed. The US needs skilled and unskilled workers, but it must be done orderly and pursuant to our laws. Congress has the power to amend those laws.
EDUCATION
I support school choice, including voucher programs, tax credits, charter schools, private schools, and home schools.
Strongly Agree
I Strongly Agree. "School choice" is a must in Illinois. Parents need options in light of public schools which focus on indoctrinating children with ideology rather than teaching them core skills such as reading, writing and math. Until this changes, which must be done quickly the options of school choice should be available to parents.
VALUES
Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality which is necessary for our system of limited government.
Agree
I agree. This is obvious to anyone who has read the writings of the Founding Fathers.
I support adding gender identity as a specially protected class in non-discrimination laws.
Disagree
Discrimination because of sex is already illegal.
Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition
Disagree
I agree with Critical Race Theory (CRT) which asserts that the institutions in the United States are fundamentally racist.
Strongly Disagree
CRT is a baseless ideology and should be treated as such.
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I don’t know what you mean by asking what are my “spiritual beliefs and values,” and I doubt that you know either. When a good friend of mine went to college they couldn’t ask for his religion so they asked him what his “church preference” was. He answered “blue roof with red shutters”. How about we all start with common sense.
ELECTIONS AND VOTING
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Disagree
People should have to show an acceptable and reliable ID if they are not recognized at the polling station.
What laws would you propose to change present voting practices?
I would make Election Day a state holiday, so people wouldn’t have to choose between work and voting. In-person voting at precinct polling stations, where you are known by your neighbors, is the best protection against voter fraud.
EQUALITY
Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?
No. We are one of the most diverse countries in the world. We are not perfect, but we as a nation evolve and get better with every generation. Racism is the least of our problems; it's a made up issue.
Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.
Disagree
There is no basis for reparations.
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT
Which comes closest to your view? A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost.
A
I support the use of hydraulic fracking to extract oil and natural gas resources.
Neutral
It is important for the US to be energy independent.
ABOUT YOU
What do you think is the general purpose of government?
The job of government is to help those that cannot help themselves, to provide police and courts of law, to build roads, to regulate where absolutely necessary, to provide neutral judges and arbitrators, to resolve civil disputes, and to provide the common defense.
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Lean Conservative
But first and for most - American. I escaped a communist country so I know what that means more than most people born here. Consider those words: I had to “escape” a country, like it was a prison. My view is that I want what is best for the United States of America.
Please provide publicly available information, including interviews and media reports, validating your answer to the previous question (other than your website).
There are none I know of.
Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized in either civil or criminal court for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.
No
What else would you like voters to know about you, including your legislative priorities?
I invite all voters to my website karlinforillinoissenate.com
CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY
Police officers should be personally immune from prosecution for conduct consistent with departmental policy (qualified immunity) while on duty.
Neutral
Your question does not correctly define “qualified immunity.” I believe qualified immunity needs to be reformed but not abolished.
I support redirecting funds from police departments to mental health and community programs.
Strongly Disagree
The police need our support and we need to supply them with the best training, equipment, and the best leadership available. Training, vetting and re-evaluation are what is required to assure the best police officers are on the street and weed out the bad apples The vast majority of police officers are hardworking individuals who need to be able to do their job without constantly being under a microscope. They need more money not less.
2ND AMENDMENT
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
I believe that the 2nd Amendment is there to assure the other nine amendments. The only people who can/should be restricted from firearms possession are the mentally ill and felons convicted of violent crimes.
Victims of gun violence should be able to sue firearms dealers and manufacturers.
Disagree
I believe the tort laws already in place are sufficient.
