RIGHT TO LIFE
Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?
I believe in addressing the system that creates problems, and not simply trying to band-aid the problems. I would push for medical, social, and economic reforms to reduce the need for abortions. From easier access to contraception, to better sex education, there are many programs that have been shown to reduce abortions. I do not believe that politicians are in the position to decide what medical care is allowed.
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).
Strongly Disagree
Planned parenthood has provided a number of Utahns with health care when they could not afford it elsewhere. From birth control, to yearly checkups...Planned Parenthood is a healthcare provider. They should receive federal funds for providing that healthcare.
I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.
Agree
I don't believe the government should be in a position to tell you how to live, or how to die. However, we need to ensure that these choices are made without coercion. Finding the reasonable center for this would require a lot of input from mental health professionals.
ECONOMY
What changes, if any, should be made to the tax code?
For the last 60 years we have been living under a tax code that funnels funds to the wealthy, in hopes that they would return the favor and improve the lives of Americans. Given the current wealth disparity, homelessness, and the inability to find jobs that pay a living wage...I believe corporations have had their chance to lead. We should return to some of the previous tax rates in order to begin paying for the services we all enjoy, but often take for granted. I would remove the food tax, and make sure that the wealthy pay their fair share.
What government spending would you reduce in order to balance the budget?
Corporate subsidies and builder sweetheart deals. It is unfortunate that those that have the most, are often given the most leeway to not pay. The builders and corporations benefit the most from our taxes, allowing them to thrive while many in Utah cannot.
Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.
Strongly Agree
It is no longer the case that a college education guarantees an increase in successful professional outcomes. Public education should apply broadly, and create well-rounded Americans that understand not just the depth of their field, but the breadth of the world and how their field affects it. Providing free access to that level of education will build a better community with more empathy and global context. We will need this to meet the problems of tomorrow.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.
Strongly Agree
There is no way to apply the rule of "it's against my religion" equally to all religions. The foundation of denying service to someone because of your beliefs cannot be extricated from the years of racial and gender oppression in our country. Any service that is broadly publicly available should not be allowed to discriminate based on religion. An entity that does get to discriminate based on religious beliefs should be able to show a consistency in applying their doctrinal discrimination.
Under what circumstances can government close churches?
None. Either a church falls under a clear definition of a religious institution meant to reinforce, teach, and augment the beliefs of those that follow that religion. If the overall purpose of the church tends to be retail, investment, or political activism...that church should be taxed and presented as those organizations. If churches want the broad ability to discriminate and ignoring the rules of the constitution, then they must be separate from all other aspects of the secular world and allow the church to exist to elevate the spiritual experience.
HEALTHCARE
What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D)Tax-payer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be de-funded.
B) Private insurance should also not get subsidies in order to compete with the single-payer healthcare. Healthcare drives our viability as a country, and thus, should be available to all equally. If people want to pay for extra insurance for specific issues or preparation, they can absolutely do so. But the goal of single-payer health care should be to provide the best health outcomes to all Americans with each American counting as one. This means investment in medical research would be included in this budget.
Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?
The government should have broad ability to be able to respond to pandemics. The recent pandemic showed how easily individual accountability can be overridden by mis- and disinformation, causing severe long-lasting damage to the economy, and viability of our healthcare system. This should include multiple levels, where vaccinations can be required by any government public facility (libraries, military, public school, public employment) at all times. Vaccination has a proven record of reducing the spread of various diseases and reduces the impact on our healthcare industry. A pound of prevention is worth a gigaton of emergency room visits. The FDA is our representation for ensuring that the available vaccines are safe and effective. Employers can also require vaccinations if the organization is on-site. During health emergencies like a pandemic, then any organization that has an investment in keeping their workforce and customers healthy can require vaccination proof. This should not be something we allow during non-emergency days. For those that do not want to get vaccinated for personal reasons, they should have easy options to continue to contribute to the economy. From WFH opportunities, to food and medicine delivery, we can ensure that those that choose to provide
