RIGHT TO LIFE
Under what circumstances should an elective abortion be allowed?
That should be up to a woman and her family and her doctor. I don't believe that any politician should say they know better than the individual who is affected. I support Roe.
Chemical abortion drugs should meet essential safety standards (such as in-person consultation with a medical doctor) and require reporting to gather evidence on reactions and outcomes.
Disagree
These drugs, such as Mifepristone have been used for over 20 years. They have been proven safe and effective.
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).
Disagree
I don't know how they are funded, but I do believe that if young women or girl who has been raped and happen to be on Medicaid, they should be covered for abortion and any therapy needed. Abortion care is health care. Also, Planned Parenthood doesn't only help with abortion care, they provide birth control and connect pregnant women with services and programs they need.
I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.
Neutral
I would support assisted suicide for terminally ill people but I also believe that a psychological assessment should be done to make sure they are in a right state of mind to make that type of decision. I don't think that- just anybody feeling suicidal should be able to get help with that. They need a different kind of care.
ECONOMY
Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.
Strongly Agree
What is your position on the minimum wage?
I remember when minimum wage was $3.65 an hour. It's been changed once in my lifetime, though prices have steadily gone up over time. I support raising the minimum wage.
Should environmental and social issues, like ESG (environmental, social, and governance) ratings, be used as criteria in deciding where to invest public monies?
Yes
Line 5 is a good example of this. Enbridge wants to build a tunnel, but when it's built, they want the Michigan tax payers to foot the bill to maintain it. They reap all the benefits and we pay. We are in a climate crisis and a full Environmental Impact Assessment should be done before they are ever allowed to drill in the Straits of Mackinac. The Great Lakes hold 21% of the WORLD's fresh water. We need to protect that for our future and our children and grandchildren.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Under what circumstances can government close churches?
There is a separation of church and state. I am not aware of any law that would allow the government to close down a church.
Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.
Agree
When you open a business to the PUBLIC, that means everyone. If you make your feelings known, the people you don't want to serve will go elsewhere to spend their money.
HEALTHCARE
What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D) Taxpayer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be defunded.
A/B Other countries have healthcare for all. Why should the United States of America? People shouldn't have to decide if they need to see a doctor or if they can pay their rent.
Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?
When you are a member of a community, you have a responsibiity TO that community. If your kids are sick, my kids could get sick. If I'm sick, I could get you sick. It's a simple matter of taking care of each other and being responsible.
NATIONAL SECURITY
The Chinese Communist Party poses serious military, cyber security, intellectual property, and global economic threats to the United States.
Agree
This is not new. They have been our adversaries for years. So has Russia. Why do so many now love Putin?
Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?
Yes, they are our ally. We have a strong relationship with them because of our own Jewish population. I don't think we should be continuing to give them weapons if they are only going to continue to kill civilians in Gaza, however. Everyone has a right to live.
IMMIGRATION
The U.S. should do more to physically secure the southern border.
Disagree
A wall isn't going to stop anything. We need to get more officers, more immigration judges and get more people processed legally. We are a country made up of immigrants and that is our strength, not a weakness. The GOP has been fear mongering that we're being taken over, invaded, and it's just not true. There are reasons people are risking their lives to get here and it's not just to vote for democrats.
EDUCATION
The state should fund education by allowing dollars to follow the child through programs which protect parents' freedom to choose their child's school – public, private, or homeschool.
Strongly Disagree
A free PUBLIC education is guaranteed in the Constitution. It doesn't say that if you want a specific education the government will pay for it. A voucher program is just another way to bankrupt our public school system, making it harder for public schools to run and pay their teachers, and increase the divide of income disparity.
VALUES
Children are the most vulnerable members of society and must be protected from abuse, including gender ideology, grooming, and bodily mutilation.
Strongly Disagree
Children need to be heard. They and their parents along with their therapist will make decisions for them. The fear mongering around trans kids is another example of the GOP raising issues that are not a problem and fear mongering about it. The children who come out as trans have years of therapy before any kind of "body mutiliation" or gender affirming care can be done. These children are high risk for suicide in part, because of the attack on them from the right.
Parents should have the right to make decisions for their minor children.
Strongly Agree
That is how it should be, and is.
Taxpayer funds should be used to provide gender transition services.
Neutral
Do their parents pay taxes? There are many hoops to jump through to get such care. It happens in such a small percentage of the population, it shouldn't be anyones worry. Why do we need to make life harder on people just because we don't agree with their choices or understand? Try to understand. Have some empathy.
Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.
Strongly Disagree
This is ridiculous. Love who you love. Marriage is a legal contract between two people. You can get married at a courthouse without any mention of God. There is a separation of church and state for a reason. The Establishment Clause in the Fist Amendment says "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion." Marriage is a legal contract and the benefits of marriage should be given no matter who you enter into that contract with.
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I was raised Catholic. I went to Catechism through 11th grade and received all the sacrements. My dad went to seminary, he was going to become a priest. I believe in helping my neighbors and treating people how I want to be treated. Feeding the poor, healing the sick and letting people have dignity. I also believe that priests are men and men make mistakes.
ELECTIONS AND VOTING
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Neutral
I believe that everyone that is eligible should be able to vote. If a photo identification is required, then one should be provided for those that cannot afford to get one.
States should join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact which makes the Electoral College irrelevant.
Agree
When the Electoral College was made, it was because the country was so big and there was no way to get information out to the public so we had electors to vote for us. We have plenty of ways to communicate information now and the Electoral College only benefits Republicans. It doesn't do what it was intended anymore, in my opinion.
EQUALITY
Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?
Yes. We can see all the hate and division that has been sewn the last 8-10 years. If we are divided, we are easier to conquer.
I agree with Critical Race Theory (CRT) which asserts that the institutions in the United States are fundamentally racist.
Neutral
This isn't an agree or disagree issue. First, it's not taught in public schools, it's a graduate level course. In the past, roads were built to disrupt black neighborhoods, as an example. Schools were segregated and black colleges were underfunded. We need to move past the policies of the past, when our leaders were ALL OLD WHITE MEN. Do you really think when they were making decisions in our history that they took into account the different races that our country is home to?
Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.
Neutral
There is testing done at higher levels of competition to be sure of hormone levels for athletes. I don't really have an answer to this question because people transitioning from male to female, will have more muscle than a born female, but not always. As far as bathrooms, etc, they are also trying to be safe. Would a trans in a male bathroom have to worry about being assaulted? I'm sure they would. This isn't a simple yes or no.
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT
Which comes closest to your view? (Select all that apply) A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost. C) Stricter environmental laws undermine U.S. energy independence and deter development of reliable electricity sources. D) Climate change is real and requires urgent policy action.
B, D We can't wait to fix this because it is happening now. Denying it doesn't change the fact that we've had more tornadoes, hurricanes, hot weather and cold weather where we shouldn't. Winter droughts? We just had one in the U.P. last winter because of lack of snowfall.
What do you believe is the most reliable energy source that will supply the growing demand for electricity?
I believe it will be a mix of wind, solar and nuclear energy. Natural gas is not going anywhere, anytime soon.
ABOUT YOU
Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.
No
Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.
No
What do you think is the general purpose of government?
To serve the people.
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Lean Liberal
I have been Independant until I signed up to run and I consider myself very moderate. I have voted for people in both parties throughout the years and vote for who I think is best for the job.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY
I support redirecting funds from police departments to community programs.
Disagree
I support funding community programs AND funding the police. We can do both.
2ND AMENDMENT
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
You have to have a license to drive a car, why not have a license to use a weapon? It makes sense that gun owners should be trained on using and storing their weapons. You can't assume that everyone has somebody to show them. I would like to see hunter safety courses brought back into schools. It was required when I was in Junior High in Escanaba, and you learned to respect weapons.
Should teachers be allowed to carry guns at school?
No
I have sisters and friends who are teachers and that is a VERY bad idea. First, teachers don't want to carry guns, and second, we don't want to encourage bringing weapons inside schools.
