RIGHT TO LIFE

I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.

Agree

My father battled cancer for 10 years. The doctors gave him 6 months to live. He was in pain and didn't want to lose his mind/faculties with the painkillers they wanted to give him. He went out into our pasture and blew his brains out. Don't try to tell me that he shouldn't have had a more peaceful and humane way to leave this World.

Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?

In 1971, the Southern Baptist Convention... passed a resolution calling on “Southern Baptists to work for legislation that will allow the possibility of abortion under such conditions as rape, incest, clear evidence of severe fetal deformity, and carefully ascertained evidence of the likelihood of damage to the emotional, mental, and physical health of the mother.” I've said before that I would vote to codify Roe vs. Wade if elected. People aren't as divided as some want to make us.

ECONOMY

Redistribution of income is needed to lessen the gap between the wealthy and working classes.

Neutral

When the Pennsylvania Declaration of Rights was discussed by the Philadelphia Congress in July and August 1776, it originally contained an article (No. 16), which stated,...“That an enormous Proportion of Property vested in a few individuals is dangerous to the Rights, and destructive of the Common Happiness, of Mankind; and therefore every free State hath the Right by its Laws to discourage the Possession of such Property.” Pre-distribution is preferable.

The government should cut spending in order to reduce the national debt.

Neutral

How many years have people tried to scare everybody about [the deficit]? How many years, how many decades have politicians tried to scare us about the deficit, the national debt, (Sen. Jim Sasser pronunciation) "the dafycit," any number of things? Yet here we're still here, and the great jaws of the deficit have not bitten off our heads and chewed them up and spit them out.-Rush Limbaugh The question is, how do you set up a system which assures that the real assets are created...?-Alan Greenspan

What changes, if any, should be made to the tax code?

I would not be opposed to eliminating all income taxes for people making under $100k. How much time, effort, expense and headaches could we eliminate? Some members of Congress are complaining about new IRS agents. Well, put your money (votes) where your mouth is.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

Religious liberty is at risk in the United States and deserves the highest level of protection in the law.

Neutral

All religions- Texas teacher fired for refusing to sign anti-BDS [Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement] oath- "The Supreme Court has recognized that nonviolent boycotts intended to advance civil rights constitute 'form[s] of speech or conduct that [are] ordinarily entitled to protection under the First and Fourteenth Amendments'." "While states have broad power to regulate economic activities, there is no comparable right to prohibit peaceful political activity such as boycotts."

Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.

There really needs to be a better classification system of corporate and business law. Corporations and sole proprietorships should then be able to choose if they want to conduct business under the 'public' system-where strict accordance with non-discrimination clauses (and access to certain types of FED funding) apply, or the 'private' system where the rules are more lax. And public information on which businesses fall into which category would be easily accessible and displayed.

What should be the relationship between the church and the state?

What constitutes a 'church' is always evolving. 501c3 organizations are supposed to serve a public interest and not involve themselves in 'politics', but everything is political in some way. And what constitutes a 'public interest', is not something people agree upon very much at all- as can be seen in the constant fighting. Getting away from the notion of taxation to 'pay for' public spending, and instead looking at upper limits may help to eliminate the controversy over tax exempt status.

HEALTHCARE

Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?

Every situation is different. There may be a pandemic in the future when the infection rate is as bad as measles and death rate close to 100%. To put absolutes on any question like this doesn't seem wise. We should feel responsibility to our fellow citizens. We forget how dependent on others we are just to live- not only when we're young, old or sick, but how many of us grew all the food we ate today?

What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D)Tax-payer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be de-funded.

First, I disagree with the 'tax-payer' funded framing. At the FED level, taxes are not needed to fund spending. The FED govt creates the currency. They can't run out. Hopefully I can talk about inflation later. To answer the question- A and B- I'm not sure why anyone would want to pay for private healthcare with an adequately funded public healthcare system, but I realize that people may. So, there's probably a place for that. And it's not always bad to have some checks and balances.

NATIONAL SECURITY

With regard to America's foreign policy, which view most closely resembles yours: A) The United States should intervene whenever freedom is threatened. B) The United States should selectively help countries trying to grow democracy and fight tyranny. C) The United States has become too involved in others' policies and should remain focused on issues regarding our own sovereignty unless in imminent danger. D) The United States should stay out of foreign conflicts completely.

Probably somewhere between B & C, but I have trouble having elected officials be the lone decision makers when it comes to whether others end up dead or alive. Shouldn't the people most likely to die have more say in their own fate? I would think about implementing some way to have frontline soldiers most likely to be in harm's way have a real vote in the missions that could leave them dead, wounded or forever changed. Why have old men and women in Washington decide everything?

I support the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement to pressure Israel to withdraw from occupied territories, remove the separation barrier in the West Bank, allow full equality for Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel, and promote the rights of Palestinian refugees.

Neutral

No one should be penalized for exercising their right to boycott. And all citizens of any country deserve equal rights. Humans deserve equal rights. Refugees deserve equal rights. If your ancestors (or parents) committed atrocities, you should admit reality and work to correct what was done. Grace, forgiveness and magnanimity are called for. No matter your religion, you deserve to not be persecuted where you live.

The Chinese Communist Party poses serious military, cyber security, intellectual property, and global economic threats to the United States.

Neutral

What's happened and is happening to the Uygher people according to accounts I've read is horrible. And threatening Taiwan? Why?? But if America wants more independence from China, lawmakers are going to have to stop believing in the 'Deficit Myth' (look up the book of the same name). The reason China has become what they have the last 40 years is because they understood industrial policy. The Green New Deal is industrial policy on steroids. It helps to bring back manufacturing from China.

What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of Islamic terrorism?

People throughout the World use religion as an excuse to kill. One of the reasons for the uprising in Syria was one of the worst droughts in the country's history. These types of natural disasters are expected to increase with climate change. Some of the hottest, driest regions are in the Middle East. If we don't start now to realize our vast resources- economic, technology and military- and start to help build clean energy and desalination in the region, the results will be bad there and here.

IMMIGRATION

The U.S. should do more to physically secure the southern border.

Neutral

"For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me" Matthew 25:35 We are not welcoming people at our Southern border. What we do under both administrations is not anywhere close to what Jesus would call for. 'Bad' people come across that border, they come across the border of Texas from Oklahoma and New Mexico as well. We have to be way smarter about how we ask law enforcement officers to spend their time and risk their lives doing.

State and federal funds shall be denied to any public or private entity, such as a sanctuary city, that is not in compliance with immigration laws.

Neutral

If Congress continues to make people choose between turning away people in need and upholding the law, many people will choose to help people in need as Jesus would have wanted them to.

Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?

There's no shortage of money to help people. This is based on the 'Deficit Myth' (read the book). There's no shortage of housing (around 33 vacant properties for every homeless person). No shortage of food (if you've ever looked in a dumpster, worked in a restaurant or a farm, you know that lots of produce gets thrown out every step of the way). Many immigrants do a lot of the dirtiest back breaking labor imaginable. It's time they are given respect.

VALUES

Sexual orientation and gender identity should be protected classes in non-discrimination laws.

Agree

Yes, don't discriminate against people because of who they want to have sex with or what they want to be called/present themselves. They aren't hurting anyone.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

'Riches are, from a biblical point of view, an affliction, an almost insuperable obstacle to entering the kingdom of heaven. Capitalism is bad for those who succeed by its standards as well as for those who fail by them, something that many preachers and theologians have failed to recognize. And those Christians who have recognized it have often enough been at odds with ecclesiastical as well as political and economic authorities.'- Alasdair MacIntyre- Catholic philosopher from Notre Dame

ELECTIONS AND VOTING

People should be able to vote without photo identification.

Neutral

West Virginia has online voting for it's military and overseas voters and apparently it has been a big success. I realize a lot of people from both parties have questions about these methods, but it seems ridiculous that in 2022 we can't have a system where people can go online with ID and perhaps proof of residence and do a Zoom call (perhaps with a concurrent phone call) where judges from both major parties (and other parties and poll watchers) can look up their info and record their vote.

What laws would you propose to change present voting practices?

cont. from above- Save time, money, be more secure and verifiable. And let people check their vote after they vote, through the election and afterward. You can check your bank account 24/7/365, but your vote? No... This would allow same day registration/voting which is common in many countries. Pass the Fair Representation Act in Congress to help end gerrymandering and use ranked choice voting to equalize the playing field. Also, Senate votes in WY should not count 50 times those in CA.

EQUALITY

Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.

I grew up on a cattle ranch in SW Nebraska. Haven't researched, but my ancestors may have gotten land under the Homestead Act. Land not available to Native Americans (killed to get access). Not available to blacks (many in bondage). No women. Probably no Hispanics, Chinese or many other races. Yes, my Dad and Grandad and probably their ancestors worked hard and made good decisions, but to think there still aren't some advantages from being white (sometimes) is flawed. Have to look at particulars

In what way? Not sure I understand the question.

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

I support the use of hydraulic fracking to extract oil and natural gas resources.

Neutral

Fracking will be around for some time. Two-thirds of natural gas production in the US is from fracking and 50% of the oil production. Almost 40% of our electricity comes from natural gas, and almost 70% of homes are heated with fossil fuels. And, of course, almost all vehicles are gasoline. But almost all climate scientists have been screaming at us for 40 years that we need to radically reduce fossil fuel use. Responsible people who care about their children act, not make excuses.

Which comes closest to your view? A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost.

Totally false dichotomy. Once again, read 'The Deficit Myth'. The US could have 0% unemployment *forever* with a Federal Job Guarantee. There is no shortage of money (can talk about inflation later). So not having enough jobs is always a choice. And, once again, on industrial policy- the Green New Deal would be the biggest capitalist bonanza in the history of man. It's like military spending- economy goes crazy with all the new money introduced. On inflation. Who sets prices? Sellers set prices. Sometimes governments, but usually businesses and/or individuals. Who has the greatest pricing power of those sellers? Not the small farm or business owner. Maybe not even regional or statewide sellers. At the top of the food chain are the multinational corporations. How are their profits doing during the last couple of years? Lumber, used cars, oil, shipping, meat packers, etc...? Record profits. Profits=Sales-Costs So if costs would have went up significantly, they wouldn't be having record profits. They would barely be making it or losing money. But that's not what's happening. 2+2=4 Japan has had the highest debt/GDP ratio in the World the last 30 years with close to 0% inflation and 0% interest rates. So maybe it's time we start looking a little deeper? Just 15 years ago, even Republicans knew what was up- from FOX news: "This is one thing we have to do," said Rep. Heather Wilson, R-N.M., chief sponsor of the bill that for the first time would create a federal law on energy price gouging. The legislation is supported by state attorneys general. "American consumers are demanding protection from price gouging," said Rep. Sherwood Boehlert, R-N.Y., in floor debate.

ABOUT YOU

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?

Choose not to answer

I'm running as an Independent. People want to place people into categories without even looking at the policies or the person. John Adams - "There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties, each arranged under its leader, and concerting measures in opposition to each other. This, in my humble apprehension, is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution." George Washington had similar sentiments. We have to stop 'picking sides'.

Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized in either civil or criminal court for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.

No.

What else would you like voters to know about you, including your legislative priorities?

Read the section on voting. There are many ways, if allowed to, that we could make our election system open up choice (for third party candidates and unaffiliated candidates), make it more democratic, secure, easier, etc... But I have little hope with the way partisanship is the norm. I would try and hire economists who understood MMT (Modern Monetary Theory) and focus on real resources. Try to change the Congressional Budget Office to stop scoring for the deficit and debt, but on inflationary indicators. Reasonable people can disagree about how to conserve the resources of the planet. But responsible people put their efforts fully toward it. We're all going to die at some point, what else is there other than to leave the World a better place than how you found it?

We're all going to die at some point, what else is there other than to leave the World a better place than how you found it?

CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY

Police officers should be personally immune from prosecution for conduct consistent with departmental policy (qualified immunity) while on duty.

Neutral

I realize that officers have unique dangers associated with their job, and split second decisions are sometimes difficult. But you can't have certain people above the law. Justice should be upheld whether you are a government official or not. Just because the case might go to trial, doesn't mean a defense can't be offered. There are protections against frivolous lawsuits.

I support redirecting funds from police departments to mental health and community programs.

Neutral

This question kind of presupposes the Deficit Myth. Why are we always in deficit? I really doubt that police officers want to arrest people for having a little weed, for being homeless or a dozen other situations that would be better handled by mental health or social service workers. This doesn't mean that money has to be 'transferred' from the police department. It means more money needs to come from the FED govt (because they issue the currency) for the mental health and social services.

2ND AMENDMENT

What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?

Something like 90% of people are for better background checks. English Common Law before the country was founded had support for many types of regulation including registration, limits on open carry and safe storage laws. I know if I were to own a gun I would look for something like a smart gun. One of my worst fears is someone using my weapon to inflict harm on someone else. This would cut down on that possibility.

Victims of gun violence should be able to sue firearms dealers and manufacturers.

Neutral

Any justice system needs to have well defined laws. If gun makers are going to be able to comply with the law, they need to know exactly what is and what is not allowed. If that's the case, I don't see why people should not be able to seek legal regress according to the laws of the territory.
