QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not be a resource for instruction or services in the school.
Agree
This is a service that should be available to students who need it through appropriate agencies partnering with parents and schools. Schools should introduce students to instruction in all of the academic subject areas, the arts, athletics, vocational, and career explorations. Schools must also teach students about their body; how it functions, and how to keep it healthy and clean. At the appropriate levels, students should also be taught about making good choices for themselves.
Human life begins at conception and deserves legal protection at every stage until natural death.
Neutral
I believe a woman should have the right to decide for herself what course of action she wants to take regarding her body. Her choices are between her and God.
ECONOMY
Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.
Strongly Agree
These are fundamental concepts and rights that are at the core of a wholesome and mutually beneficial economy.
School districts should be able to use taxpayer money for lobbying the state legislature.
Strongly Disagree
I strongly believe taxpayer dollars should be devoted to creating, maintaining, and supporting effective classrooms and schools. We must be accountable and show that we are applying taxpayer dollars to educating our students. However, I do believe we must have a presence and representation to advocate for adequate funding at the state legislature to support effective classrooms.
What is your position on government funding of public education from Pre-K through college?
I agree with this concept in general. The more educated our students, the more knowledgeable our citizenry and the more contributors we have to a stronger democratic society. I think this should be a fundamental function of government if we really want to preserve our democracy and strengthen the resolve to maintain and promote our constitution.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
At school, students should be able to speak freely and civilly about matters of conscience and faith, including Christianity.
Strongly Agree
I am a man of faith and know the value of being grounded in the teachings of faith. I would strongly encourage student groups to organize for the purpose of meeting and discussing matter of faith and Christianity.
School districts should not discriminate against individuals, organizations or small businesses because of their belief that marriage is only a union of one man and one woman.
Strongly Agree
Schools should focus on providing the most comprehensive educational experiences for each student possible. They should be encouraging students to discover their career interests and prepare them for higher education, athletics, the arts, or a career in the vocational arts. This is why a comprehensive approach to educational opportunities is important for all students.
Students should not be allowed to pray in school.
Strongly Disagree
Prayer should be allowed anywhere.
EDUCATION
What is the function of the local school board?
The function of the local School Board is to establish policy that ensures a comprehensive and quality education for every child. It is also important to support a visionary Superintendent to carry out these policies.
Who should have the authority to set curriculum and determine resources used in those curricula?
The Superintendent has the authority and responsibility and to set curriculum and determine resources used in our schools.
When should parents be restricted from speaking in school board meetings?
Parents should never be restricted from speaking at School Board meetings. My platform is focused on building stronger bonds of cooperation and support with parents.
Please list in order the following priorities in relation to the role of a K-12 public school (omitting any that do not apply): Mathematics, Information Technology, Science, Political Activism, Personal Finances, Gender Identity, Physical Fitness, American History, Critical Race Theory, Language Arts, Art & Music, Vocational Learning, Sexuality, Foreign Language, Social Emotional Learning
Mathemetics, Information Technology, Science, Personal Finances, Gender Identity at appropriate levels, Physical Fitness, American History, Language Arts, Art & Music, Vocational Learning, Foreign Language, Social Emotional Learning.
American civics education should emphasize our nation's founding principles of liberty and equality.
Strongly Agree
This is fundamental to an engaged citizenry to the matters that determine our public policies and laws. It must be made clear that this is an ideal that we are still striving to achieve.
Before students are taught courses such as Comprehensive Sex Ed (CSE) or Social Emotional Learning (SEL), they must opt-in with written parental permission.
Agree
We must inform parents why approaching certain topics that may be somewhat controversial to some. This is in line with the idea of building stronger relationships with our parents and supporters for a comprehensive education. Some parents may want to approach these subjects with their students themselves.
The loss of local control in education is too high a price to pay in exchange for federal dollars.
Agree
Make no mistake about it, we need federal dollars to offer comprehensive educational experiences for all of our children, but we do not want to give up local control of our course offerings. It is most important for local School Boards be able to focus energy and dollars on the needs of students as identified by local, state and national assessments.
I support the teaching of curricula (such as the 1619 Project, No Place for Hate, Second Step, etc.) that emphasizes slavery and racism as the foundation of American history.
Disagree
I support the teaching of a comprehensive and true version of American History that includes the contributions of all ethnic groups to the development of this great country. Our history must not be taught from just one point of view, but in a manner that teaches how all groups, one way or another, made significant contributions to the American way of life. We must make sure that students understand that we did not always get it right, but because of justice, faith in our way of life prevailed.
Parents are the ultimate authority in their child’s education and should be able to freely pursue whatever educational options they deem best for their child.
Agree
Parents must have the option to decide what direction they wish to go in order to ensure a quality education for their child. However; i also believe as School Board Member, we must do all that is possible to make public education high quality and attractive to all parents.
VALUES
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I am a man of faith in the Baptist tradition and is very active in my church where I serve as the Chairman of Trustee-Finance Ministry, and a choir member. I believe there is a God who sacrificed his Son, Jesus Christ, that we all could receive salvation and the gift of eternal life. I practice the Christian faith, and the values associated with it.
I support allowing public high school students to participate in athletic competition based on the gender with which they identify instead of biological sex.
Disagree
As a former high school athletic coach of many years, and i know how males develop over the years to full maturity and into manhood through their natural organic physiology. One of the things that separate males from females is the hormone testosterone. If an athlete has the ability to produce this hormone, then he should not compete against girls. The athlete has an advantage of being more muscular and stronger. It's only natural in men. must always be the central interest in athletic.
Who is responsible for teaching sexual education to children, and what is the appropriate age when it should be taught?
The parents have the first level of responsibility in this area. Schools should teach students sex education from an anatomical point of view, and how to keep their bodies clean and healthy, and encourage good decision making. However, high schools may find it appropriate to offer students, but only with parental consent.
If you support the teaching of Sex Ed, please answer the following question: Sexual education should include these topics (list all that apply and add your own, if needed) -- Physical and emotional health outcomes; contraceptive methods; consent; abstinence; sexual orientation and gender identity; human anatomy/the reproductive system; abortion methods and side effects; stages of pregnancy and fetal development; sex acts and pleasures of sex
Physical and emotional health outcomes, consent, abstinence, human anatomy/reproductive system, stages of pregnancy and fetal development. Sexual orientation and gender identity only by well qualified teachers, and with parental consent.
Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality that is necessary for our system of limited government.
Agree
I agree with this concept in general. The values of morality set forth by these Christian beliefs a fundamental in many ways to our direction and behaviors in life.
No healthcare diagnosis or treatment, whether mental, reproductive, or otherwise, should be given to a child without first receiving written consent from the parent.
Strongly Agree
While some schools may have medical care available to students in the form of a nurse, schools should not be offering diagnosis of any kind to a student without written consent from parents. That level of diagnosis must be left to physician or certified providers of such care.
No school official should be involved in the sexual transitioning of a student, including the use of alternative names and pronouns.
Strongly Agree
I strongly agree with this statement.
ELECTIONS AND VOTING
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Agree
All voters should have the appropriate voter identification. A voter registration card, signature, etc. I photo may be something that some voters may not have if they no longer drive or have a form of id that shows a photo. It should not mean they have lost their right to vote.
ABOUT YOU
Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized in either civil or criminal court for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.
No
A candidate's personal moral values should not be relevant when considering a candidacy for elective office.
Disagree
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Moderate
Please provide publicly available information, including interviews and media reports, validating your answer to the previous question (other than your website).
Not sure I have publicly available information to submit for this request.
Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?
I am the only candidate in this race with 47 years of experience in education with 40 of those years here in Volusia County. During that time i have served as a classroom teacher at Deland High School, an athletic coach, school-based administrator for 12 years with 9 of those years serving as a principal at all three levels. I was awarded Principal of the Year 1992-93; I have also served as a District Curriculum Supervisor or Science Education working with elementary and secondary teachers, In addition, I have served as Director of Teacher Recruitment and Retention for 12 years. I am trained in the Effective Schools Research and believe I can bring this training and experience to the table to ensure a quality education for all of our children. I am running for this seat for four reason. 1. I wish to make sure our children are attending safe schools and receiving a comprehensive education at all levels. We must move our school district from a third-rate school district as reported by the New Journal's Tuesday, the 5th, edition, to a first-rate district. 2. Enhance the support for our teachers, administrators, and support staff to make certain our schools are learning laboratories at all levels. 3. Strengthen the bonds of cooperation between parents, the business community and the School Board. 4. Seek appropriate funding from the state and federal levels to support our schools. I believe I have the necessary training, experience, and skills to assist a visionary superintendent make our school district the greatest.
2ND AMENDMENT
Teachers who are licensed to carry should be allowed to carry guns at school.
Strongly Disagree
Teachers should be kept safe to teach. Not carry weapons or guns for protection.
OTHER IMPORTANT ISSUES
Under what circumstances (if any) should schools be allowed to require vaccinations?
Schools are not the institutions to require vaccinations. However, schools should provide the necessary information to parents making them aware of all health concerns relative to their child and the recommendations to keep them safe.
I support mask mandates.
Neutral
I support measures that keep children safe in schools, and do not infringe on parental rights.
