QUESTIONNAIRE*
RIGHT TO LIFE
Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?
Every child has the right to live. Abortion denies that right. Unless the pregnancy presents an imminent and credible threat to the mother’s life, it is not morally justified to end that pregnancy. If there was a crime involved, the child did not commit it. Imposing capital punishment on one person for another person’s crimes is immoral. In our own family, we have three beautiful adopted grandchildren. So many families are waiting patiently in line to have that blessing in their lives. Women who find themselves pregnant with a child they do not want could count themselves blessed to be able to fill other lives with joy and comfort. And their children would be grateful to know they were given the wondrous gift of life and a loving family by the mothers who made those nine-month sacrifices to help other women become the mothers they could not be.
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).
Strongly Agree
During the Vietnam war, many famous people refused to pay taxes for what they counted as an immoral use of their money. This is no different. For taxpayers who feel abortion is immoral, it is just as unconscionable to force them to pay when the government uses that money in violation of their values and morals.
I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.
Disagree
Life is just as important at its end as it is at its beginning. The law should encourage both doctors and patients to use palliative care, including pain medications that could become addictive, in terminal cases. The patient has the right to refuse life-extending treatments, but, “first, do no harm.”
ECONOMY
What changes, if any, should be made to the tax code?
Eliminate the state income tax. This tax is too intrusive and too easily manipulated to entice people to use their income in ways the government would prefer. I have signed the Colorado Union of Taxpayers (CUT) pledge not to raise taxes. The so-called loss of state monies from the income tax can be made up for in reducing the size of government, and using other sources of revenue.
What government spending would you reduce in order to balance the budget?
There are far too many commissions and agencies in Colorado, and eliminating them entirely or reducing their scope and budgets would improve the economy as well as recognizing that taxpayers have the first claim on the wealth they create.
Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.
Strongly Disagree
Not all those who would qualify under such a program would be suitable for college. This would set more firmly the erroneous notion that college is necessary for a middle class life. Trades and entrepreneurship, for example, are equally valid options. It is wrong to take money from people who do not go to college in order to pay for the college education of those who do and especially for those who go to college, but who do not belong there.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.
Strongly Disagree
Religious liberty is just as important and perhaps more than the right to services that violate this right. There is always an alternative to this coercion.
Under what circumstances can government close churches?
Churches are constitutionally immune from any governmental interference. The First Amendment to the federal Constitution guarantees all people the right to worship as they see fit, and does not grant any power to the federal government to interfere. The Colorado Constitution does not grant such a power to the state. Therefore, neither level of government can presume to close churches for any reason. Individuals and congregations are responsible enough to make their own decisions.
HEALTHCARE
What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D)Tax-payer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be de-funded.
C) Government weakens or destroys everything it touches. Even these popular programs are poorly run. Expanding the role of government into the healthcare field beyond where it has already intruded can assure only greater suffering and pain.
Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?
Private enterprises should be able to do as they choose. They cannot put people in jail for not obeying those edicts. But governmental agencies do have that power and this fact alone require they have as few opportunities to abuse it.
NATIONAL SECURITY
What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of Islamic terrorism?
This is not a state issue.
I support the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement to pressure Israel to withdraw from occupied territories, remove the separation barrier in the West Bank, allow full equality for Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel, and promote the rights of Palestinian refugees.
Strongly Disagree
Israel has the right to exist, granted by the United Nations in the mid-XX. This is economic terrorism. Arabs in Israel already have all the rights of any other citizens in Israel.
IMMIGRATION
The U.S. should do more to physically secure the southern border.
Strongly Agree
Yes. As we have seen recently, we all live in a “border state” and of the few responsibilities the national government has, protecting the border is one of the most important.
Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?
Every alien person wanting to enter the United State must be fully vetted before crossing the border. Those who seek refugee status must remain in the first country where they are safe before applying for protection. I support immigration for those who meet the stipulations above.
EDUCATION
I support school choice, including voucher programs, tax credits, charter schools, private schools, and home schools.
Strongly Agree
Yes to all of the above, with the proviso that any voucher or similar program cannot be used to restrict a parent’s choice in choosing which school or other educational process is eligible for the voucher funds. No proposal that allows the money to follow the child reduces so-called public school funding on a per-child basis. Most actually increase that amount.
VALUES
Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality which is necessary for our system of limited government.
Strongly Agree
These values are the foundation of our culture and civilization. The federal Constitution is, in the words of John Adams, “made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” Without those values, our system of government will fail. This does not mean everyone must be a practicing Christian. It means we must all adhere to the moral values connected with Christianity. The two are not the same thing. We must respect others’ religious choices.
I support adding gender identity as a specially protected class in non-discrimination laws.
Strongly Disagree
So-called protected classes need protection from discrimination based on the differences between them and the mainstream population, but they do not need ADDITIONAL rights. Government can only grant these by infringing on the rights of others. This is not a moral option.
Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition
Agree
Whether marriage is defined by God is immaterial here. Quite the contrary: government has no legitimate right to define the relationships between or among people. The parties to each union should define their own marriage arrangement without any governmental intervention. As it is, there are always three parties to a marriage, and the third is the most powerful: it can change the rights and responsibilities each of the others has to each other and to the government, as well. This is unfair.
I agree with Critical Race Theory (CRT) which asserts that the institutions in the United States are fundamentally racist.
Strongly Disagree
The United States are the least racist country on the planet. Critical Race Theory, no matter the name it hides behind, is flawed from the outset.
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I believe that each of us is a child of God, that He has granted us agency to choose our own path through life with as little interference as possible from outside forces, and that absent any actual or near 100% potential harm, each of us should be free to do just that: make our own choices. This means that we are each responsible to restore anyone we’ve hurt to the same state as before the harm. The Golden Rule applies: “Whatsoever thing ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them”.
ELECTIONS AND VOTING
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Strongly Disagree
The right to vote is sacred. Allowing those who cannot demonstrate their citizenship should not be permitted to exercise that right. A photo ID is the best way to assure the person voting is the person with that right.
What laws would you propose to change present voting practices?
We must have photo ID for each citizen voting in person and signature verification for all ballots mailed in, but limiting such mil-in ballots to those who request them. Voter rolls should be cleaned by cross referencing death records and change-of-address requests through the post office in near real time. Both county clerks and the secretary of state would be required to certify voter roles bi-annually.
EQUALITY
Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?
Yes. Racism is detrimental to a functioning society, no matter who is acting as a racist. This is not limited to the majority group; anyone and everyone can be racist, and act on those beliefs.
Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.
Strongly Disagree
Anyone who can demonstrate having been a slave should receive reparations from the person or person who enslaved him. This applies to anyone of any race in either category, slave or slave holder. Race is not a defining criterion in the matter of slavery.
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT
Which comes closest to your view? A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost.
No one wants a dirty environment, but there is always a cost to every choice. In this case, “A” is much closer to the true environmental situation: the richest nations are the ones who can afford to pay attention to the environment, and impoverishing them will not solve the problem — it will only make it worse.
I support the use of hydraulic fracking to extract oil and natural gas resources.
Strongly Agree
Yes. In Colorado, we have the most stringent regulations for fracking of anyplace on the planet. It does not hurt the environment when done correctly, as we are already doing.
ABOUT YOU
What do you think is the general purpose of government?
The government has but one legitimate purpose: to protect each citizen, first to protect the citizen in the exercise of individual rights and second to protect that person’s life, liberty, and property.
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Very Conservative
I am a slightly right-leaning, lower-case “l” libertarian. That government is best which governs least. Thoreau said that, and he was right.
Please provide publicly available information, including interviews and media reports, validating your answer to the previous question (other than your website).
http://self-gov.org/ https://commitment2colorado.com/
Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized in either civil or criminal court for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.
No. Does not apply.
What else would you like voters to know about you, including your legislative priorities?
Educational freedom is my highest priority, followed by reducing the abysmal crime rates in Colorado. The third principle element is improving the Colorado economy so our children and grandchildren can afford to live here. ADDITIONAL PRIORITIES Honor the Taxpayers’ Bill of Rights and Proposition 117. Protect the Rights of the Individual. Conserve Our Environment. Bring Accountability and Transparency Back to Government. Create Jobs and Career Opportunities. End the War on Rural Colorado. Build Strong Communities.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY
Police officers should be personally immune from prosecution for conduct consistent with departmental policy (qualified immunity) while on duty.
Strongly Agree
Police officers accused of negligence ought to be given the same right as others: the presumption of innocence. The standard of proving that negligence ought to be higher for an accuser because police officers must make life-or-death decisions in fractions of a second. Theirs is a dangerous job, and a charge of negligence must not be a sentence of life in prison while they are protecting the law-abiding citizens around them.
I support redirecting funds from police departments to mental health and community programs.
Disagree
This can only result in higher crime rates and more pain and suffering among the poorest in our cities and across the state. Funding for additional services should be in addition to law enforcement support.
2ND AMENDMENT
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
Children and the mentally ill should not own firearms. They either have not demonstrated the maturity to own and use them responsibly, or they have demonstrated an incapacity to do so. Otherwise, only those who have, by committing violent acts against others, placed themselves outside the protection of the law should be restricted in their ownership and use of arms. Such persons are incapable of living peaceably among civilized people and can legitimately be denied access to destructive tools.
Victims of gun violence should be able to sue firearms dealers and manufacturers.
Strongly Disagree
This is an incredibly bad idea. No suppliers of any other products are held liable for the intentional misuse or illegal use of their products. It will drive the cost of legitimate production and distribution up which will promote a black market, resulting in firearms becoming less safe in design and manufacture and in keeping low-income families from being able to protect themselves — they are the ones at greatest risk.
