QUESTIONNAIRE

RIGHT TO LIFE

Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?

None, even in the case when both the mother and child are at risk of death, the surgery to save the mother may take the life of the child, but only as a consequence. The objective should be to save both lives.

Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).

Strongly Agree

Taxpayers should not be forced to contribute to the death of innocent human lives.

I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.

Strongly Disagree

The taking of innocent human life violates the Hippocratic Oath, a standard that stood for millennia. Those who deny the wisdom of the past and Judeo-Christian ethics need to understand that the consequences could damage the fiber of civilization.

ECONOMY

What changes, if any, should be made to the tax code?

Taxes, fees, credits, and deductions all drive taxpayer behavior. Great care must be taken before making changes to the tax code because there may be unintended consequences. Until I gain experience in the legislature and learn more about the sources of state revenues, I am reluctant to advocate changes to the tax code.

What government spending would you reduce in order to balance the budget?

Measures to improve efficiency and eliminate wasteful spending are the first course of action. Bureaucratic agencies lack the accountability needed to self-correct inefficiencies in the same way private enterprise experiences correction through market feedback. Audits can serve as a surrogate if the legislature is willing to enforce identified corrective actions.

Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.

Strongly Disagree

The founders of our country recognized the need for an informed citizenry. Funding for education is critical to our democratic republic so that we have an informed electorate. Our education system is responsible for producing literate patriotic citizens which requires a quality secondary education, not a college degree. Primary and secondary school systems that fail to produce literate patriotic citizens should be at risk of having their funding redirected to successful schools.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.

Strongly Disagree

If the state is allowed to impose an ideology upon private businesses and organizations, then the state has imposed a pseudo-religion upon citizens in direct violation of our 1st Amendment right.

Under what circumstances can government close churches?

Churches have a right to licit assembly and the government should not have the authority to close them. Churches have a responsibility for the health and safety of their members and not the state.

HEALTHCARE

What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D)Tax-payer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be de-funded.

C - The state should be the provider of health care for those who are unable to provide for themselves, for instance, the disabled. Without personal responsibility, health care costs could be rationed or costs could become prohibitive.

Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?

Mandates should be limited to time-tested vaccines that have a proven record to save lives without serious side effects. Even then, exceptions should be allowed for health and moral reasons.

NATIONAL SECURITY

What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of Islamic terrorism?

The first measure is a strong defense that stops terrorists from entering the US, especially across our southern border. Next is an offense by forming alliances with other nations that are also under attack by terrorists, including Arab countries. Aggressively pursuing terrorists where they live in cooperation with like-minded nations is a valid policy.

I support the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement to pressure Israel to withdraw from occupied territories, remove the separation barrier in the West Bank, allow full equality for Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel, and promote the rights of Palestinian refugees.

Strongly Disagree

Israel is a sovereign nation, so the US does not have a right to determine what measures are needed to maintain its security. As long as Hamas continues to use terrorist tactics, Israel has the responsibility to take measures to protect itself from terrorism.

IMMIGRATION

The U.S. should do more to physically secure the southern border.

Strongly Agree

Yes, unless the border is secured, there will continue to be a market for the abuse of desperate people from other nations. The current open border policies cause immigrants to be treated like cattle by forcing them to walk across a river to enter the US.

Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?

As the son of immigrants, I am grateful to the US for its willingness to accept immigrants. It should be a legislative determination as to the circumstances and process required to enter the US. Those who are willing to integrate into society and become contributors are most likely to succeed.

EDUCATION

I support school choice, including voucher programs, tax credits, charter schools, private schools, and home schools.

Agree

Our school systems should enable every student to flourish. There is no “one size fits all” solution and public systems cannot meet every student’s need. Therefore, there should be options for students whose needs are not being met by public schools, whether it is due to a lack of resources or failure to deliver. All school choice programs should be evaluated by the legislature and those that have demonstrated success should be encouraged and applied in Oklahoma.

VALUES

Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality which is necessary for our system of limited government.

Strongly Agree

Our founders made a great personal sacrifice to form our government. It has been the example of our founders and so many other patriots who followed the golden rule that has made this country such a beacon of hope to the world. Judeo-Christian values teach us to love one another as God has loved us, a standard greater than the golden rule.

I support adding gender identity as a specially protected class in non-discrimination laws.

Strongly Disagree

Identity is an amorphous characterization of a person that lacks definition. It is irrational to create laws that cannot be defined.

Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition

Strongly Agree

Marriage is a sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. It has been practiced by societies for millennia as a means to support children. Children deserve a father and mother, and while circumstances may not always fulfill this goal, intentionally denying children of a father and mother deprives children of a natural and inalienable right. Society should strive for the ideal, although that may not always be possible.

I agree with Critical Race Theory (CRT) which asserts that the institutions in the United States are fundamentally racist.

Strongly Disagree

The institutions in the United States are not fundamentally racist. When I was preschool age living in Louisiana, I clearly recall asking my mother why some people were sitting at the back of the bus. Much later as I drove off to college in Georgia, I passed through Alabama and a sign, “Home of Governor George Wallace”. The roads narrowed and I remembered Wallace (a Democrat) blocking the entrance of a college. Sadly, what remains is bigotry toward persons in the womb.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I am a cradle Catholic born of Dutch immigrants who followed my uncle, a priest, to Louisiana. I flourished in a culture that has a profound respect for every individual as created in the image and likeness of God. Fulfillment comes from accepting reality, seeking truth, and appreciating the grace that flows from making the most of life.

ELECTIONS AND VOTING

People should be able to vote without photo identification.

Strongly Disagree

Voter verification is fundamental to ensuring the trust of the voters in the outcomes of elections and should be mandatory. It is disingenuous to suggest that there are citizens that are incapable of obtaining photo identification.

What laws would you propose to change present voting practices?

I have discovered that people have died or moved and they have remained on voter rolls. That is problematic, given the advancement of technology. Investment in the Oklahoma Election Board database to add verification functionality would be a worthwhile investment for taxpayers.

EQUALITY

Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?

No, the United States has learned from the mistakes of the past and the remnants of racism are not systemic. United States security is threatened by the increasing power of authoritarian regimes, and in particular, the CCP, as they build economic leverage across the world which will likely become a major security threat.

Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.

Strongly Disagree

Reparations are a judicial matter and should be limited to those inflicting harm and paid to those that are harmed.

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Which comes closest to your view? A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost.

A – In light of my experience in the utility industry, environmental regulations have come at a very high cost and in some cases have resulted in security issues of much greater consequence.

I support the use of hydraulic fracking to extract oil and natural gas resources.

Strongly Agree

Technological advances in the oil and gas industry have brought about significant economic and national security benefits, with little or no environmental consequence. Initially, the technology went through a learning phase, but further advances have addressed environmental concerns and have placed the United States in a position to outperform other countries having a net positive effect on the environment and has furthered worldwide security.

ABOUT YOU

What do you think is the general purpose of government?

Government must maintain a military for a common defense against foreign adversaries, protect the innocent from those who would do harm, provide limited services for those who cannot take care of themselves, support education to enable an informed citizenry, establish monetary policies that enable free enterprise, and build and maintain common infrastructure needs.

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?

Conservative

Where possible, government should be limited so that citizens are able to provide services efficiently. Bureaucracy is inherently inefficient because consumer feedback is indirect and muted by those in power.

No

What else would you like voters to know about you, including your legislative priorities?

With 40 years of practical business experience, I am a strong consensus builder well prepared to pull together the resources needed to enact beneficial common sense conservative legislation. As an entering legislator, there will be an opportunity to learn from experienced legislators and determine where my skills and knowledge are best deployed. Voters have asked that the economy take priority over concerns of the ill effects of federal overreach.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY

Police officers should be personally immune from prosecution for conduct consistent with departmental policy (qualified immunity) while on duty.

Strongly Agree

Officers are required to make instantaneous decisions based on the training provided by the organization in which they serve. It is the responsibility of these organizations to develop proper reflexive responses to these circumstances and officers should not be forced to second guess their training.

I support redirecting funds from police departments to mental health and community programs.

Strongly Disagree

If anything, additional funding should be directed to police departments, since they are not able to address many smaller crimes, resulting in criminals that are getting away with small crimes and moving on to more serious offenses.

2ND AMENDMENT

What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?

No restrictions beyond those already imposed in Oklahoma. That said, gun safety training should be readily available and free of charge.

Victims of gun violence should be able to sue firearms dealers and manufacturers.
