RIGHT TO LIFE
Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?
I believe in the absolute right to life at conception. The purposeful destruction of an unborn child is not medically necessary to save the life of a woman, and I stand for the delivery of the live baby in such rare circumstances, not abortion. The baby may be too early to survive after delivery, but there is a fundamental difference between performing medically necessary treatment on the mother that results in the loss of the baby and the purposeful abortion of the baby. In regard to babies conceived during rape or incest, a woman who has survived sexual assault already has suffered violence and injustice and deserves strong and unwavering support and advocacy for her injuries and during her pregnancy. However, to undergo an abortion to kill the innocent baby does not rectify the violence the woman has suffered and answers violence with more violence. I strongly stand for supporting sexual assault victims who have resulting pregnancies and for the infrastructure to assist them throughout and after the pregnancy, to include adoption and placement of the baby should the mother so choose.
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).
Strongly Agree
I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.
Strongly Disagree
ECONOMY
What changes, if any, should be made to the tax code?
I support the SC Senate's current pending state tax bill that cuts the top income tax rate from 7% to 5.7%, which applies to income over approximately 15k and puts us closer in line with neighboring states. I also support cutting our corporate tax rate across the board from 6% to 3% to support our local small businesses while also attracting corporations and manufacturers to SC rather than our government providing one off tax exemptions to companies in exchange for promises of job creation. We should not put the government in the position of picking winners and losers and instead should allow market forces and competition to dictate success.
What government spending would you reduce in order to balance the budget?
South Carolina law requires the Governor to submit a balanced budget to the legislature, and the legislature in turn must pass a balanced budget each year.
Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.
Strongly Disagree
I support taxpayer-funded education for primary and secondary education; not for college.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.
Strongly Disagree
Under what circumstances can government close churches?
None.
HEALTHCARE
What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D)Tax-payer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be de-funded.
Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary.
Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?
There must always be legally enforceable exemptions, to include for religious and medical reasons.
NATIONAL SECURITY
What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of Islamic terrorism?
The United States should continue intelligence work in the middle east and alliance and training of non-terrorist governments, military, and law enforcement agencies in middle eastern countries, as well as continue our intelligence work that monitors potential terrorist activity targeted at Americans and/or American lands.
I support the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement to pressure Israel to withdraw from occupied territories, remove the separation barrier in the West Bank, allow full equality for Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel, and promote the rights of Palestinian refugees.
Strongly Disagree
IMMIGRATION
The U.S. should do more to physically secure the southern border.
Strongly Agree
Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?
Those who follow our immigration laws and are law abiding individuals in their own countries who seek to come to the United States for education, employment, or to be with family members should be allowed to immigrate under a system that justly and fairly goes through applications based on the economic needs in the US for employment from those outside the USA; higher education with openings for students; and families looking to reunite should take precedence. Further, an allowance, criteria, and process for law abiding refugees fleeing humanitarian crises and individual asylum seekers should be established that also works with other countries to assist with immigration and settlement of refugees in other countries.
EDUCATION
I support school choice, including voucher programs, tax credits, charter schools, private schools, and home schools.
Strongly Agree
VALUES
Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality which is necessary for our system of limited government.
Strongly Agree
I support adding gender identity as a specially protected class in non-discrimination laws.
Strongly Disagree
Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition
Agree
My faith is clear that marriage is between a man and woman, and government should never be allowed to dictate to churches what marriages they must preside over. However, I do not oppose civil unions defined by civil law.
I agree with Critical Race Theory (CRT) which asserts that the institutions in the United States are fundamentally racist.
Strongly Disagree
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
My Christian faith is my guide in life. I believe that the Bible is the word of God and provides us with clear instruction to be bound to the higher moral authority and ethics of right and wrong.
ELECTIONS AND VOTING
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Strongly Disagree
What laws would you propose to change present voting practices?
South Carolina still is in need of 1) banning ballot boxes and ballot harvesting; 2) requirement of identification of SS# or license or state ID# for absentee ballot submission; 3) signature comparison requirement for absentee ballots submitted; 3) a systematic and yearly routine verification of the accuracy of voter rolls in every precinct; 4) use of the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlement Program to help identify non-citizens who register to vote; 5) require those assisting voters to provide their identity and reason for assistance; 6) the state legislature needs standing to sue to ensure compliance with election laws as passed by the legislature.
EQUALITY
Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?
Racism is inherently wrong, and any illegal act motivated by racism, whether that be discrimination in public accommodations, employment, education, or crime, among others, is addressed by our current Title VII federal laws and state counterparts and federal and state criminal code and laws.
Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.
Strongly Disagree
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT
Which comes closest to your view? A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost.
Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy;
I support the use of hydraulic fracking to extract oil and natural gas resources.
Neutral
I do not believe that we should drill for oil off of the coast of South Carolina. While I appreciate that hydraulic fracking is a much safer and cleaner process, I also know that the resources off of the coast of South Carolina are significantly less than in other areas of our country.
ABOUT YOU
What do you think is the general purpose of government?
To provide for the security, justice, and order of society and to protect individual liberties and freedom with limited government.
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Conservative
Please provide publicly available information, including interviews and media reports, validating your answer to the previous question (other than your website).
Facebook page @Jackie Edgerton; Press Release(s) in the Island Eye News and Moultrie News.
Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized in either civil or criminal court for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.
No.
What else would you like voters to know about you, including your legislative priorities?
I have a twenty-year legal career in service as an Assistant United States Attorney, an attorney for the United States Army, and as a state level criminal prosecutor, and I am committed to leadership and public service for our Representative. I also am the wife of a medical doctor and small businessman and mother of two daughters in our schools. I’m running to represent District 112 because we need action and advocacy in the State House. I will jump in and address important issues to continue to make South Carolina the best state in the nation, to include reforming our public education system to ensure all children receive a quality education of their parents’ choice; lowering our state taxes to include cutting our corporate tax rate across the board to support our local small businesses while also attracting corporations and manufacturers to South Carolina; strengthening the alliance between our technical schools and businesses to create a ready workforce for the number of businesses already here or looking to come with well-paying jobs for our young adults; and ensuring thoughtful and measured infrastructure change to support the growth of the lowcountry. I will fight to protect people’s freedoms, families and businesses, and the future of South Carolina and am committed to three main responsibilities of the office: First, we send a Representative to the State House not to simply vote yay or nay to proposed laws; rather our Representative must be willing and able to research, draft, and advocate with commitment for conservative legislation that makes our lives better. Second, when there is disagreement or discord between the State and the local towns in the district, the Representative should facilitate negotiation between the parties to assist in creating a workable solution that benefits all. I’ve spent 20 years successfully negotiating resolutions in contentious legal cases and will use my skills to do the same to strengthen the relationships between our District and the State, rather than create more conflict. Third, our Representative should stand ready to serve our District inside and outside the State House. This means assisting in local matters to ensure the District’s citizens’ rights are upheld, including advocating for citizens directly before local entities such as school boards that enact rules that run amok of state law.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY
Police officers should be personally immune from prosecution for conduct consistent with departmental policy (qualified immunity) while on duty.
Strongly Agree
I support redirecting funds from police departments to mental health and community programs.
Strongly Disagree
2ND AMENDMENT
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
Our federal laws that require all gun purchases from a federal firearms licensee to contact and use the National Criminal Background Check System to ensure the purchaser is not barred from firearm purchase for one of the federal prohibitions serves to protect the public. In addition, I support state level stricter criminalization of illegal gun possession, as the vast majority of gun violence occurs at the hands of those illegally possessing a firearm.
Victims of gun violence should be able to sue firearms dealers and manufacturers.
Strongly Disagree
