QUESTIONNAIRE

RIGHT TO LIFE

Human life deserves legal protection from conception until natural death.

Agree

What role should the school serve in helping a student with an unwanted or crisis pregnancy?

Pregnant students should be offered counseling and connected with a wide range of nonprofit resources to help them see a clear, supportive path forward. It is important that they understand they are not facing this situation alone. Schools should work to ensure continued educational success by offering, when appropriate, innovative high school options that allow students to remain engaged in their education throughout pregnancy. Additionally, students should be informed of available accommodations, including nutritional support and flexibility when they are not feeling well, so their health and well-being are fully supported.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

With regard to public schools, what does "separation of church and state" mean to you?

To me, the separation of church and state is an important constitutional principle that protects both our religious freedom and the integrity of public institutions. I believe it means that a govt should not mandate a specific church denomination, nor should it compel religious belief or practice. At the same time, separation of church and state does not require individuals to abandon their moral convictions when serving our community. Protecting the meek, Strong families, Moral compass etc.

ECONOMY

What is your position on government funding of public education from Pre-K through college?

We do not have unlimited resources to fund every proposal that sounds appealing. Covering the cost of college for everyone would place a substantial financial burden on taxpayers. Preschool does offer meaningful benefits, particularly in identifying at-risk students early and helping children close learning gaps before they widen. However, it remains a costly investment at a time when our public schools are struggling to adequately fund core necessities.

Student loan forgiveness unfairly shifts the financial burden to those not responsible for student debt.

Strongly Agree

I support laws that protect students from predatory lending practices. However, I do not believe taxpayers should be responsible for absorbing the cost of poor financial decisions. I worked multiple jobs and carefully budgeted to pay off my own student debt. Responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars matters, and wasteful government spending remains a serious problem in our country.

IMMIGRATION

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) enhances the safety and security of communities by identifying and detaining illegal aliens.

Strongly Agree

I lost a friend who was murdered while on duty by an individual who was in the country illegally. That individual had been stopped months earlier and released despite multiple violations of the law, including illegal possession of a firearm. This failure highlights serious gaps in enforcement and accountability. Beyond the human cost, illegal immigration also places a substantial financial strain on taxpayers through increased demands on public safety, courts, and social services

EDUCATION

Abortion and gender-affirming providers, including Planned Parenthood, should be a resource for instruction or services in the school.

Agree

In my view, Planned Parenthood is a politically aligned organization, and I do not support bringing groups into schools that promote a political agenda. Ongoing culture-war debates, including those around gender identity, distract from our core mission of educating children. Support for pregnant students should be broad, nonpolitical, and focused on clear pathways to educational success while preparing to care for a child.

Consequences for bad behavior create a safe and orderly environment, which is essential for student learning.

Strongly Agree

We must hold students accountable just as we hold staff accountable. Too many excellent educators have left because they no longer feel safe, with repeatedly violent students being returned to the same classrooms. We owe it to our children and our teachers to provide a safe, stable learning environment.

Educators should give students a thorough education in America's founding documents and cultivate American patriotism.

Strongly Agree

First and foremost, I consider myself a constitutionalist. Teaching American and world history is essential so students can understand how fortunate they are to live in a nation that guarantees fundamental freedoms such as due process, freedom of speech, and freedom of religion.

I support eliminating the U.S. Department of Education and giving control back to states and communities.

Neutral

I support keeping government as local as possible and recognize that there is significant waste at the federal level. My primary concern is the role of the Office for Civil Rights, which has been critical in exposing serious failures and cover-ups within public school systems. Title IX complaints and allegations of sexual misconduct by staff are not always handled appropriately. Without the OCR, there is a real risk that some states will fail to properly investigate.

If you support the teaching of Sex Ed, please answer the following question: Sexual education should include these topics (list all that apply and add your own, if needed) -- abortion methods and side effects; abstinence; consent; contraceptive methods; human anatomy/the reproductive system; physical and emotional health outcomes; sex acts and pleasures of sex; sexual orientation and gender identity; stages of pregnancy and fetal development

Children need to understand that unprotected sex can have lifelong consequences, affecting not only their own health but, in some cases, the health of future children. Certain sexually transmitted diseases can lead to infertility. Education should also include instruction on consent, basic anatomy, personal hygiene, and the physical and mental changes that occur as the body develops. These topics are essential to helping students make informed, responsible decisions.

Please list in order the following priorities in relation to the role of a K-12 public school (omitting any that do not apply): American History, Art & Music, Civics, Critical Race Theory, Foreign Language, Gender Identity, Information Technology, Language Arts, Mathematics, Personal Finances, Physical Fitness, Political Activism, Science, Sexuality, Social Emotional Learning, Vocational Learning

Tough one. Basics like Language arts, math, science, civics and American history at the top. Information technology, Foreign language, finance next followed by physical fitness and arts. We have to focus on the basics first and foremost.

Public schools should prioritize academic achievement and building character necessary to preserve American traditions and self-government.

Strongly Agree

School choice creates competition, and that competition will push public schools to improve their educational systems.

Agree

I fully support our public schools exploring innovative ways to provide a high-quality education. Year-round schools and programs like CIHS are successful examples of alternative pathways families are using. I would like to see these kinds of programs expanded in the future.

2ND AMENDMENT

Faculty who are licensed to carry and have had ongoing training should be allowed to carry guns at school in order to respond to an active shooter situation.

Agree

I'm going to click agree simply because not every school (like private schools) cannot afford School resource officers. Regarding our own Public School District, I am VERY Pro 2A and have done a significant amount of high level training....Enough training to understand that we should rely on properly equipped SROs for lethal force situations. I believe we need to make it mandatory for our paid sros to where where bulletproof vests while on duty since they are the tip of the spear.

ABOUT YOU

Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.

No

Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.

No

I voted in these primaries and general elections:

2014 General Election 2016 Democratic Primary 2018 General Election 2020 Republican Primary 2020 General Election 2022 Republican Primary 2022 General Election

I pulled a Dem primary ballot in 2016 since I was registered unaffiliated and it upset me that the Dem party was intentionally rigging the primary in support of Hillary. Dems yet again made a mockery of the Presidential primary system this last time around as well. Seems to be a pattern.

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to immigration and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?

Very Conservative

Overall I have to say very conservative due to my strong stances on an array of topics. I'm an open book so feel free to email me your questions Chris@SuttonforSchoolboard.com

VALUES

Biological males should be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.

Strongly Disagree

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

Im closest to God when I'm out in his creation, not a church pew. I can read a Bible with the congregation and not go as mentally deep in thought about it as I do when Im by myself enjoying nature. My faith has helped me through the toughest times of my life and I try to live my life based on the simple principles found in scripture. Be a simple man. Be a kind person. Help those around you.

Government should recognize and support the fundamental right and essential duty of parents to direct their child's health and educational well-being.

Strongly Agree

I support the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., that people should be judged by the content of their character and not the color of their skin.

Strongly Agree

Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.

Disagree

While this has nothing to do with school board, I personally find myself believing in Holy Matrimony, which is a sacred, God ordained covenant between a man and woman. Imo Marriage is a legal union between two people who love each other and isn't the same as Holy Matrimony.

Mental health conditions such as anorexia and gender dysphoria need to be treated, not affirmed.

Strongly Agree

School library books that have literary value, as determined by experts, should be exempt from obscenity laws.

Disagree

We've learned that "experts" sometimes have ulterior motives when it comes to what they determine has literary value. I do not support erotic books being placed in our libraries.

ELECTIONS AND VOTING

People should be able to vote without photo identification.

Strongly Disagree

Voting is one of the most important responsibilities of a citizen. Sometimes elections are decided by just a handful of votes—as we saw in the 2022 New Hanover County primary. Every vote truly matters.
