QUESTIONNAIRE

RIGHT TO LIFE

Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not be a resource for instruction or services in the school.

Choose not to answer

Without knowing more I can't say which groups should or should not partner with our school system but I can say that I would not disallow a group that provides abortions on that basis alone. I do not believe that abortion counseling should be provided in a school.

Human life begins at conception and deserves legal protection at every stage until natural death.

Strongly Disagree

I do not claim to know when life begins and I do not believe that it is the government's role to legislate based on the idea that life begins at conception. I am pro choice. This issue has not impacted any decision I've made on the school board.

ECONOMY

School districts should be able to use taxpayer money for lobbying the state legislature.

Agree

New Hanover County contributes to the NCSBA and that entity lobbies our legislature for things like pay, calendar issues...etc... Thy system ONLY has access to taxpayer dollars and I support our boards decision to use a small amount of that money to further benefit the taxpayers in our county.

What is your position on government funding of public education from Pre-K through college?

The right to a quality education is enshrined in the North Carolina Constitution. I believe that government funding of public education is a critical task that must be performed by any government in a democracy. Education is the largest expenditure for EVERY state's budget. I don't think that should change and I support increased spending on education in the state. The percentage of state contributions to local education authorities (LEA's) has decreased from around 80 percent 14 years ago to around 63 percent today. The cost savings to the taxpayer in wealthier county has been....zero. Most of the counties have seen an increase in their local sales or property tax to make up for the lost revenue. Our students operating under poorer LEA's have suffered mightily.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

At school, students should be able to speak freely and civilly about matters of conscience and faith, including Christianity.

Strongly Agree

The Supreme Court (and lower federal courts) have allowed for some restrictions on the free exercise clause of the first amendment. The standard has been that restrictions are allowed to maintain order in a school safety. Operating within that standard I'm fully support of discussions of faith and am the belief that conversations about religion and faith are constitutionally protected.

School districts should not discriminate against individuals, organizations or small businesses because of their belief that marriage is only a union of one man and one woman.

Neutral

As I said we already partner with faith based organizations. Parents who choose to send their kids to those organizations are obviously comfortable with the messages they provide and we have an obligation to those families and students. I am fiercely opposed to racist, hateful, or bigoted ideas and I am a big supporter of marriage equality and of LGBTQ rights more broadly.

Students should not be allowed to pray in school.

Strongly Disagree

If a student wants to pray they should have that right.

HEALTHCARE

Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?

Case law and precedent is clear on that issue. I do not believe that a local school system in North Carolina should require vaccines outside of what the state mandates. I also do not believe that LEA's have the authority to limit or alter state mandated vaccines. Unless they qualify for exemptions I believe that the school system should comply with the law and ensure that it's population is vaccinated to the point required by the state.
