QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not be a resource for instruction or services in the school.
Agree
Planned Parenthood absolutely does not belong in schools. Any discussion of abortion should be limited to guidance counselors only.
Human life begins at conception and deserves legal protection at every stage until natural death.
Choose not to answer
This question does not relate to the position that I am running for, which is Guilford County School Board.
ECONOMY
School districts should be able to use taxpayer money for lobbying the state legislature.
Strongly Disagree
Taxpayer money needs to be spent directly on the students within the district.
What is your position on government funding of public education from Pre-K through college?
It would be ideal if we could keep government out of education completely. Unfortunately, at this point in time our public schools desperately need government funding in order to be able to function.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
At school, students should be able to speak freely and civilly about matters of conscience and faith, including Christianity.
Agree
Students should absolutely be able to speak freely, as long as their discussions are relevant to the curriculum. Teachers should encourage multiple points of view and CIVIL discussion.
School districts should not discriminate against individuals, organizations or small businesses because of their belief that marriage is only a union of one man and one woman.
Agree
I don't believe that the topic of marriage is any business of school districts.
Students should not be allowed to pray in school.
Strongly Disagree
I believe that schools should have (as is allowed by NC law) a daily moment of silence where students can center themselves before they begin their day. For many students, this would include a time of prayer. I think students should be encouraged to pray during this time, if that is appropriate for their belief system. If not, this should be a quiet time of reflection before beginning their school day.
HEALTHCARE
Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?
Only for approved and established vaccinations.
EDUCATION
When should parents be restricted from speaking in school board meetings?
Never.
Please list in order the following priorities in relation to the role of a K-12 public school (omitting any that do not apply): Mathematics, Information Technology, Science, Political Activism, Personal Finances, Gender Identity, Physical Fitness, American History, Critical Race Theory, Language Arts, Art & Music, Vocational Learning, Sexuality, Foreign Language, Social Emotional Learning
in order of most important to least important: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Personal Finances, American History, Vocational Learning, Informational Technology, Physical Fitness, Social-Emotional Learning. I do not believe that Political Activism, Gender Identity, Sexuality, or Critical Race Theory belong in K-12 schools.
American civics education should emphasize our nation's founding principles of liberty and equality.
Strongly Agree
Absolutely.
Before students are taught courses such as Comprehensive Sex Ed (CSE) or Social Emotional Learning (SEL), they must opt-in with written parental permission.
Strongly Agree
Parents should also be allowed access to this curriculum before it is taught.
The loss of local control in education is too high a price to pay in exchange for federal dollars.
Strongly Agree
We need to return control of the schools to local municipalities.
I support the teaching of curricula (such as the 1619 Project, No Place for Hate, Second Step, etc.) that emphasizes slavery and racism as the foundation of American history.
Neutral
I believe that we need to be teaching accurate American history, based on facts. This is a subject that needs to be broached carefully, with the prevalence of racism in today's world. We need to be teaching students to learn from history and not to repeat the mistakes of our past, but we do not need to be contuing to foster hate and racism in today's world.
Parents are the ultimate authority in their child’s education and should be able to freely pursue whatever educational options they deem best for their child.
Strongly Agree
What is the function of the local school board?
A school board should be establishing policies focused on the education of the local students, while following local and federal guidelines. They should listen to the needs of the community and parents and work in the best interest of their students and staff.
Do you support the National School Board Association's characterization of parents who speak out at school board meetings as "domestic terrorists"?
No
Parents should always have a voice in the education of their children.
Who should have the authority to set curriculum and determine resources used in those curricula?
The local school board, with input from teachers and parents.
Who has the ultimate right to control the education of children in public schools? (a) parents (b) teachers (c)school boards.
I think that ultimately it falls on a school board to determine the education for children in a district - HOWEVER - this should absolutely be done with input from both teachers and parents. A single teacher or parent may have biased views, and therefore a board needs to work for the best interest of ALL students within their district.
VALUES
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I am a devout Christian in my personal life. Although I would personally love to see God back in our schools, there is a separation of church and state, and we need to respect those who have different religious beliefs and values. This is one reason I believe we should implement daily moments of silence - so that students who wish to use that time to pray have the opportunity to do so, without infringing on the religious freedoms of other students.
I support allowing public high school students to participate in athletic competition based on the gender with which they identify instead of biological sex.
Strongly Disagree
Who is responsible for teaching sexual education to children, and what is the appropriate age when it should be taught?
Ultimately, parents should take on this responsibility, but sadly, many do not. And sadly, many students make poor choices based on a lack of education. In my opinion, schools should teach basic biological sex education in 5th grade (things like anatomy and the menstrual cycle) and basic pregnancy and disease prevention (abstinence) by 7th grade. Parents should have the opportunity to review all materials used in this instruction.
If you support the teaching of Sex Ed, please answer the following question: Sexual education should include these topics (list all that apply and add your own, if needed) -- Physical and emotional health outcomes; contraceptive methods; consent; abstinence; sexual orientation and gender identity; human anatomy/the reproductive system; abortion methods and side effects; stages of pregnancy and fetal development; sex acts and pleasures of sex
human anatomy/the reproductive system, stages of pregnancy and fetal development, abstinence, physical and emotional health outcomes, consent
Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality that is necessary for our system of limited government.
Neutral
I think much of our current government is seriously lacking in any morality.
No healthcare diagnosis or treatment, whether mental, reproductive, or otherwise, should be given to a child without first receiving written consent from the parent.
Strongly Agree
Except in the need to do life-saving measures where you do not have time for written consent.
No school official should be involved in the sexual transitioning of a student, including the use of alternative names and pronouns.
Strongly Agree
EQUALITY
I support the teaching that an individual, solely by virtue of his or her race, is inherently racist, whether consciously or unconsciously.
Strongly Disagree
Absolutely not. We need to be teaching that ALL children are equal.
ABOUT YOU
Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized in either civil or criminal court for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.
no
A candidate's personal moral values should not be relevant when considering a candidacy for elective office.
Strongly Disagree
A candidate running for public office is hoping to achieve a role where they will be making decisions for thousands of citizens. It is critical to look at a candidate's moral values to determine if they are the best fit to support the needs of their community.
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Conservative
Someone described me recently as a "common-sense conservative," which I thought was a very accurate statement.
Please provide publicly available information, including interviews and media reports, validating your answer to the previous question (other than your website).
I am a registered Republican. Triad City Beat has an article about many of my opinions here: https://triad-city-beat.com/republican-primary-candidates-guilford-school-board/

As a lifelong educator and leader, I bring a wealth of experience to the table. Please check out my website to learn more about my stance on various issues. I look forward to serving the parents, students, teachers, and staff in District 2 of Guilford County's Board of Education!
OTHER IMPORTANT ISSUES
Under what circumstances (if any) should schools be allowed to require vaccinations?
Only with tested and approved vaccinations
I support mask mandates.
Strongly Disagree
People should have the freedom to wear a mask if they choose to, but I do not think they should be mandated.
