RIGHT TO LIFE
Human life deserves legal protection from conception until natural death.
Strongly Agree
All human life, especially the lives of people who are the smallest, of the least means, and the elderly, need protection and a place in our worlds where they can thrive and enjoy the natural rights enumerated in the Constitution. This goes way beyond abortion and needs to be a cultural priority in our shared American civilization. It is my hope and personal goal to see our culture accept all human life, respect it, and help everyone live a long and fulfilling life.
The lives of human embryos created through artificial methods ought to be protected from purposeful destruction.
Strongly Agree
IVF has given us life and allowed people who could not naturally have children a chance to be parents and raise many children who have contributed greatly to our world. Like many other technologies, such as artificial intelligence, taking the building blocks of life outside the natural process has moral and ethical issues that society must sort out. This is one of them. We can have the miracle of IVF and benefit from medical research without destroying human life. That should be our shared goal.
Under what circumstances should an elective abortion be allowed?
Because abortion always ends human life, no matter how small or non-viable in some people's eyes, I personally believe it is wrong to end that life without due process of law. In Washington, abortion is legal and it is up to people like me who would like to see all human life protected to change the culture by welcoming all babies into this world rather than attempt to use the force of law to change people's minds. Ideally, all babies and their moms would have a great life in this world.
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should receive taxpayer funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).
Disagree
While I will never in any way oppose essential life-saving medical care for any pregnant woman, I do not believe the public should subsidize any medical care that is deemed elective by health care professionals. Planned Parenthood is a very wealthy organization and has the means to provide medical services to people in need without leaning upon the taxpayers.
The Comstock Act, which bans interstate transportation of abortion-inducing drugs, should be enforced.
Strongly Agree
The application of the Comstock Act to abortion-inducing medications is currently working its way through the legal system as of Spring 2026. As passed in 1873, pre-dating the medication in question, I seriously doubt abortion was part of the original intent. Rather than leaning upon the courts, if Congress wishes to ban mail-order abortion pills it should just act. Likewise, the Executive Branch shouldn't use this law as a way to circumvent state laws either. This should be debated in Congress.
ECONOMY
Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.
Strongly Agree
This is absolutely essential and is constantly under attack from people who covet what other people have or somehow feel they are better stewards of resources possessed by others. Everyone should have the ability to work hard and be rewarded for those efforts. Success is not guaranteed for everyone in everything they do, but the ability to try and get ahead in life must never be stifled and always encouraged.
People who can afford to pay more taxes should do so in order to provide relief for working families.
Neutral
The premise of the question misses the point of taxation. It is not for the purpose of creating fairness. It should be for the purpose of funding essential government functions first, ahead of elective spending. I think the people of Washington were wise to force our state government to have a flat tax on all property. I think the same should be generally true of all other forms of taxation. If everyone pays something, they all have a vested stake in the work government does on our behalf.
The government should cut spending in order to reduce the national debt.
Strongly Agree
We must fund essential things first and things that matter less afterward. People frequently ask what I would like to cut to balance the budget. That is the wrong question. We, instead, need to fund what we value and need to most first, just like families do every day at home, then fund other things after we have taken care of the essentials. Our country is extremely wealthy and generous. We lead all others in the world in both of these things. There is plenty of money to get things done.
List your top 3-5 priorities to eliminate government waste.
1. Fund the essentials first. This will not be easy, but it is essential to identify what we value most and prioritize it first. 2. Do the hard work of debating a real budget that is in balance and focused upon growing our economy and opportunities for all. 3. Expose and debate the wasteful things in public for all to see. 4. Make sure there is so much public pressure to do the right thing that these crazy spending ideas die a natural death. 5. Never forget the people who sent us to Congress.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.
Strongly Disagree
People must never be compelled to violate their personal beliefs individually or while doing business with the public just to satisfy the desires of government or others. With social media and other viral means of getting the word out to the public far and wide, if someone or a business unjustly acts, the best remedy is to let the whole world know so people can vote with their feet. The various public accommodation laws on the books should be revisited in light of changes in today's society.
What does "separation of church and state" mean to you?
It literally means the government shall not get involved in the affairs of people as they practice their faith. It does not mean that people of faith, any faith, should not be able to affect the functions of government or society as a whole. This expression is frequently used in a reverse context from the original intent. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" according to our Constitution is clear.
HEALTHCARE
What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D) Taxpayer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be defunded.
Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. We do have other health care programs now, however I feel all of them should be redesigned to focus upon using the competitive private sector as much as possible with government getting involved only as is necessary to protect human life and promote the general welfare of our people. There is no excuse for us to not replace the ACA/Obamacare and make our health care system the envy of the world.
The government should keep a database of people with various ongoing medical illnesses to assess the economic burden of treatment.
Strongly Disagree
This already exists in various forms. I have worked with this type of health care data for a sizable portion of my career. The government does not have any need to track the health of individual American citizens. The data we have now should be anonymized and used only for data science and development of better ways to treat health problems, and not for any purpose associated with any individuals. We should collect health data for visitors at points of entry for public safety purposes only.
NATIONAL SECURITY
With regard to America's foreign policy, which view most closely resembles yours: A) The United States should intervene whenever freedom is threatened. B) The United States should selectively help countries trying to grow democracy and fight tyranny. C) The United States has become too involved in others' policies and should remain focused on issues regarding our own sovereignty unless in imminent danger. D) The United States should stay out of foreign conflicts completely.
The United States has become too involved in others' policies and should remain focused on issues regarding our own sovereignty unless in imminent danger, or in selective cases where friendly countries are trying to grow democracy, fight tyranny, and repel unjust invasions. We should always put America First as a beacon of peace, strength, and stability. That sometimes means doing things that we don't want to do, but are otherwise necessary, always with the goal of promoting our American values.
The Chinese Communist Party poses serious military, cyber security, intellectual property, and global economic threats to the United States.
Strongly Agree
Even though the Chinese people are largely friendly to the United States and we have a massive trading partnership, the Chinese Communist Party and its tentacles in our country and around the world pose a clear and present danger to the safety and security of our people. The best way to deal with the threat is through our own strength and by upholding our enduring commitments to friends around the world. Specific to Taiwan, we must maximally prioritize preventing war and maintaining the peace.
Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?
Yes. It is also very important that we expand the nations that are participating in the Abraham Accords as a means to normalize peaceful relations between Israel, the Arab nations, and others. Israel is not always right and frequently acts in its own interests, contrary to what Americans would like. They are a sovereign nation and I expect that. To achieve our goals and promote peace and stability in the region, we should use our strength, build relationships, and promote trust.
Islamic terrorism is a threat to the United States' national security.
Strongly Agree
Islamic terrorism has been demonstrated to be an ongoing threat to the security of the world, not just the United States. There are non-Islamic terrorists. That is indisputable. Iran is not the only threat. Currently, the biggest threat does come from religiously-motivated terrorists backed by the Iranian theocracy and their resources. The sooner we end the war with the Iranian theocrats that they started in 1979, the better life will be for millions, if not billions, of people around the world.
IMMIGRATION
Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?
Countries are defined by their shared culture and borders. We need to promote our uniquely free American civilization. One of the ways we do that is by maintaining secure borders and other entry points. It is the right of the citizens to decide who can come here and who cannot or must leave. Congress needs to tighten up laws surrounding immigration so the Executive Branch is not capable of neglecting our borders, especially our dangerous border with Mexico where many people have died needlessly.
I support the existence of sanctuary cities to protect undocumented persons.
Strongly Disagree
Sanctuary policies, in defiance of the federal governments supreme role in governing immigration, are a massive threat to the safety of not only our people, law enforcement officers, but also the illegal immigrants themselves. No person is illegal, however entering our country illegally, staying beyond the limits of any visa, and refusing to leave when ordered by the courts is a crime and must be punished if we are to remain a fair and honest society. People must maintain legal status or leave.
EDUCATION
I support eliminating the U.S. Department of Education and giving control back to states and communities.
Strongly Agree
The states are more than capable of handling the education system without the need for the federal government to have oversight. Leaning upon the crutch of the federal government has made our education system weak and ineffective compared with the rest of the world. It's time to do something different, let the states resume full responsibility for their children's education, and sunset the entire Department of Education. It no longer serves the people well and should be replaced by the states.
Foreign governments should be prohibited from funding American education.
Strongly Agree
Foreign governments should tend to their own education systems and must be blocked from using their money and influence to steer our education system or anything else that is closely related to our American culture and civilization. If foreign governments truly want to help our people, they should consider making direct donations to the Treasury and allow Congress to choose how to best appropriate those funds to advance education, other American priorities, or pay down our debt.
VALUES
Attempts to physically or socially transition a child to the opposite sex constitute child abuse.
Strongly Agree
We need to accept and love children rather than join them in an irrational and impossible desire to be of the opposite sex than we were created. People will be quick to point out edge cases of indeterminant sexuality, people born with ambiguous genitalia, and other issues. Those people will always need special consideration. What we cannot allow is government schools to assume the role of parents without due process of law and start messing around with children's lives. This is just plain wrong.
Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.
Strongly Agree
Government should stay out of the business of ordaining marriage and charging fees to people who want to commit to each other in the sight of God. Marriage is a matter of faith. While there are some arguments justifying the government getting in the business of marriage and more laws than I can count including the tax code are intertwined with the legal definition of marriage, I would like to see government divest from its involvement in people's intimate faith lives.
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I am very strong in my faith in the saving power of my Lord Jesus Christ and am a born-again Christian living out my faith life in public as a member of a church family that belongs to the Christian and Missionary Alliance. Jesus is the center of my life and because of His teachings and my faith in Him, I will always do my best to demonstrate His love and teachings in everything I do. That includes in public service in Congress where my daily decisions will be driven quite literally by the "What would Jesus do?" lifestyle I have chosen. That means I am faith-bound to be fair and honest with others and will always do whatever I can to glorify Him through my actions and words including His command to love one another in everything I do.
ELECTIONS AND VOTING
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Disagree
We have allowed our voter registration database here in Washington to become untrustworthy and should plan to require identity verification over a reasonable period of time. I have spoken with the current Secretary of State about this issue, along with other issues regarding ballot security, and feel that there are reasonable ways to assure our people that only citizens are voting without making voting cumbersome or inaccessible for people with special needs. People need to trust our elections.
EQUALITY
Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.
Strongly Agree
Allowing biological males to self-identify as females and have access to private spaces dedicated to women and girls is ridiculous and completely disrespectful. They should understand that their personal view of their sexuality is not shared by most women and girls who participate in sports set aside for them to allow them to compete fairly away from generally more dominant men and boys. While I am sensitive to the feelings of people with gender dysphoria, they need to respect women and girls.
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT
What do you believe is the most reliable energy source that will supply the growing demand for electricity?
I think we are going to see a breakthrough, after all of the empty promises of the past, and experience clean nuclear fusion becoming a reality starting right here in Central Washington in Malaga, joining hydro and traditional nuclear power.
ABOUT YOU
Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.
Never.
Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.
No.
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Lean Conservative
I am a traditionalist. My views are very much in the mainstream of society. I have travelled widely in our country and work with many people with whom I do not share the same beliefs. I am a Republican in a family of mostly Democrats and grew up in Everett, a conservative, blue collar, heavily unionized community. We all have different life experiences. We must learn to live life to its fullest together, stand up for people in need, and deal swiftly with people who are an affront to civility.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY
Government has a responsibility to protect children from sexual exploitation during online activities.
Strongly Agree
Government has a role to play, but it is ultimately my expectation that parents and people with whom they trust their children must take responsibility for protecting their children. In our very connected world, children have access to things, positive and negative, that we barely could dream of as kids. We need to keep that in mind when we buy them cell phones or let them play online. My kids grew up with the Internet. It's a powerful tool that parents themselves must master and understand.
2ND AMENDMENT
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
The right of the people to possess and use arms is clear. For those people who say we need to update the meaning of the Second Amendment, there is a constitutional process to make changes. The bar is very high and requires broad support. Nobody wants crazy people to have firearms or other means to harm people. Restricting the lawful in hopes of stopping the insane is itself insane and proven unproductive. The real solution to violence is to deal with violent people and keep them off our streets.
