What is the function of the local school board?
It is our responsibility to hire ( and fire if need be) the Superintendent, set goals, policy and procedures, approve budgets and be ever mindful of taxpayers dollars and the most efficient usage of those dollars for the best outcome. It is not the function of a local school board to do the day to day planning and activities of a school district. We do take seriously the outcomes of our students and we are always interested in programs that will give us those desired outcomes that prepare them for further studies or to live a productive life in general. We do have a Board Monitoring System that takes our annual goals and disseminates information as to how close to our goals we are and where we need improvement.
Who should have the authority to set curriculum and determine resources used in those curricula?
The State Board of Education ( an elected body) sets curriculum standards and reviews and adopts instructional materials for the State of Texas. The Texas Education Agency, headed by the Commissioner of Education ( an appointed position by the Governor) sets the TEKS ( Texas Essential Knowledge) and at the local level, the curriculum and instruction department recommends the adoption of instructional materials from the SBOE approved list to the Board of Trustees. In addition to these state adopted materials, classroom teachers us a variety of instructional materials to assist in delivering content. Parents are entitled to review all teaching materials, instructional materials, and other teaching aids used in the classroom. Parents, Employees, or any District resident may formally challenge a resource used in the educational program based on appropriateness.

Who is responsible for teaching sexual education to children, and what is the appropriate age when it should be taught?
First and foremost, I feel it should be parents and/or guardians that begin the discussion, however it is mandated thru our Texas Legislature that it should be taught in school at seventh and eighth grade levels. My wife and I had decided that when ( and if) our sons ask questions about sex, that we would be honest and word appropriate, which I believe is a solid way to teach our own children. I do know that some parents do not want to discuss, and so the school is where some learn about sex, although the information might not be accurate or appropriate. That is why this was included in curriculum, is my understanding.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
Born and raised by Presbyterian Parents and Grandparents, I married a Wonderful Catholic woman who has been my wife for 48 years. I did convert to Catholicism, but my GOD did not change his face when I converted. I try to always practice what the Bible reveals ... Love God with all your heart and soul, Family Second and treat your neighbor as you would want to be treated. It is not our place to Judge anyone...that is left for our GOD, who is the only one that can judge.

Why are you running for this office?
I am proud of my past 16 years of serving on the CFISD Board of Trustees. I feel that there needs to be continuity to continue and even improve on the many programs being offered all of our students and affording them the opportunity to pursue career, military or college. I am also serving on the Texas Association of School Boards as 2nd Vice President, and hope to be elected First VP at TASA/TASB convention in September 2021. Such a rare opportunity to work alongside and with 40 plus Directors from across this great State of Texas

Which of the 11 objectives specified in the Texas Education Code is your highest priority?
I would probably group two together...Offer a well balanced and appropriate curriculum and prepare students to be thoughtful, active citizens with appreciation for the basic values of our State of Texas and National heritage.
What books have had the most profound impact on your view of life?
The Bible first and foremost. Tale of Two Cities, Lord of the Flies,( from High School) and more recently, Max Lucado's " Grace".
What education or experience qualifies you to hold the office for which you seek election?
My degree is in Music Education, I did teach for three years. Following that, I worked in rehabilitation of recently blind, thinking I would pursue my counseling degree. Marriage and offer to move into Industry changed that, as I worked in steel industry for almost 40 years. My wife, being a teacher, could not volunteer, which I did for our three sons, which led to my first run for the office of Trustee in 2005. My experience expanded with serving on TASB Board of Trustees.

Although I have been a member of the Republican party for over 45 years, I never vote straight ticket, but try to educate myself especially on the candidates that will have the most direct affect on my life and family. I am a strong believer in the American Dream, and am very opposed to a socialistic society. However, I do believe that there should be an Opportunity for each and everyone, without constraint on ethnic, economic or educational backgrounds.

Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?
I realize that I have served in this position for 16 years, and many might think that that is enough, and possibly, although I feel it has been successful in CFISD, is time for someone different. I would like to make clear that I have no desire to seek a higher office, and that my heart and soul are firmly secure in the community of CFISD. I would like to serve another term, pursue some ideas that are innovative, work alongside this amazing team of professionals that are educating so many students to become the best that they can be and to be active community members.

I believe in the vaccinations, but I also believe that parents have the right to decide what is best for their own children. Giving the factual information is something that should be mandatory.
