QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Human life begins at conception and deserves legal protection at every stage until natural death.
Strongly Agree
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds or grants from federal, state, or local governments.
Strongly Agree
I support the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which requires health care providers to provide life-saving treatment for infants who survive an attempted abortion.
Strongly Agree
Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?
The only exception should be for the life of the Mother.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Governments should not discriminate against individuals, organizations or small businesses because of their belief that marriage is only a union of one man and one woman.
Strongly Agree
Governments should define marriage as between one man and one woman; no other definition of marriage should be legalized or supported with taxpayer or public funds.
Strongly Agree
Religious liberty is at risk in the United States and deserves the highest level of protection in the law.
Strongly Agree
I promise to protect the freedom of Christians to share the Gospel and to practice Biblical principles.
Yes
What does "separation of church and state" mean to you?
I read the separation of church and state to mean our governments do not promote a certain type of religion, no state religion. I don't believe the government should be limiting religious activity.
NATIONAL SECURITY
The best way to maintain peace is through a strong military.
Strongly Agree
HEALTHCARE
It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has health insurance.
Strongly Disagree
How would you promote healthcare coverage that is adequate, affordable and accessible for all?
I would allow insurance companies to work across state lines opening up competition. I would allow customers to pick the amount of coverage or areas of coverage that is best suited for them. Ninety percent of people in the country were covered before the ACA. The ACA only had twenty million people enrolled and half had healthcare before the ACA cancelled them. I would deal with the ten percent that weren't covered in a way to provide basic care. If they can contribute at least a portion of the cost that would offset some of the expenditure. Freedom is a word that is lacking in the healthcare industry.
ECONOMY
It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has a livable income.
Strongly Disagree
Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.
Strongly Agree
What government spending would you reduce in order to balance the budget?
At the federal level I would eliminate any program that hasn't been evaluated within the last 5 years. I would eliminate the Department of Education and move all dollars back to the states.
IMMIGRATION
I am in favor of construction of a wall and other necessary infrastructure on our border that gives complete control over entering and exiting the United States.
Strongly Agree
State and federal funds should be denied to any public or private entity, including but not limited to sanctuary cities, that are not in compliance with immigration laws.
Agree
Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?
Immigrates that go through the proper and legal way to get into the United States. We should prioritize people that can be productive once they are arrive.
EDUCATION
Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.
Disagree
CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY
Mandatory minimum sentencing should be required and enforced for violent crimes.
Agree
2ND AMENDMENT
Should teachers be allowed to carry guns at school?
Yes
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
We have some of the toughest restrictions in country here in Michigan. Keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and the mental ill is most important.
OTHER IMPORTANT ISSUES
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Strongly Disagree
I support the legalization of recreational marijuana.
Disagree
The Electoral College should be abolished.
Strongly Disagree
In priority order, what three areas of legislation do you propose to author or sponsor if elected?
1. I would sponsor more opportunities for vocational/skilled training. Possibly diverting dollars away from state colleges to vocational schools. That could include more opportunities at the high school levels. 2. I would sponsor legislation to create a state vender lists so we are more prepared for a future pandemic. We had Michigan companies helping this time with the federal government because the state never asked or asked way to late in the crisis. 3. I would sponsor legislation that would require K-12 schools to have at home learning available to all of the states students. Not just for a pandemic, also could be valuable in a difficult snow day year.
Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?
Racism should have no place in our Country. Unfortunately there are sick people in our society that are either ignorant or just plane evil that perform senseless acts against some people. These threats should be monitored by the authorities, but I do think the media over plays some of these situations.
JUDICIAL PHILOSOPHY
I support the use of Sharia law as a basis for legislation and judicial decisions in the United States.
Strongly Disagree
ABOUT YOU
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and immigration, which of the following best describes you overall?
Conservative
Please provide publicly available information validating your answer to the previous question.
As the chair of the Grand Traverse Republican Party, I have made multiple statements on local news and print media. TV stations 7&4, 9&10 and the local newspaper Record Eagle can be searched for stories I have made comments on. I have a website rothforrep.com and a Facebook page @johnjrroth that can be searched also.
What education or experience qualifies you to hold the office for which you seek election?
My education is in running a successful business. A marina business is my current occupation. This field can be very vulnerable to so many outside pressures like taxation, weather, and the economy as a whole. My 6 years on the County Parks & Rec Board, serving as President for 4 of those years, gave me hands-on experience on government operations and limitations.
Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.
NO
Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?
I have worked 3 jobs in the last 18 years that at times overlap. I am ready to work that hard for the voters of Grand Traverse County and the state. I am reasoned in my deliberation. I can work with all people that have a common goal of bettering a situation.
VALUES
Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality which is necessary for our system of limited government.
Strongly Agree
I support adding sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression as protected classes in non-discrimination laws.
Strongly Disagree
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I have strong belief in God and that makes me comfortable in the decisions I make.
