QUESTIONNAIRE

RIGHT TO LIFE

Under what circumstances should an elective abortion be allowed?

The government should not be in the exam room and, as a Christian, it is not my place to force my beliefs on others, especially if the mother is put at risk by a pregnancy. I feel it would be a sin to interfere with healthcare and if a woman died from my the legal expression of my beliefs my punishment would be eternal. God holds judgment in his heart, not me.

Chemical abortion drugs should meet essential safety standards (such as in-person consultation with a medical doctor) and require reporting to gather evidence on reactions and outcomes.

Agree

Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).

Strongly Disagree

I donate to Planned Parenthood because many women can only access female healthcare at PP. Breast and cervical cancer is detected and treated there. I do believe women should not die of preventable disease, and do not deserve to be treated poorly because they are poor. Unless a better alternative provider of medical care to poor women is available, I will continue to donate.

I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.

Neutral

This question could construe hospice services as assisted suicide and I strongly support hospice and ameliorating suffering at the end of life. God will decide the moment of death no matter how we intervene as mortals.

ECONOMY

Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.

Agree

What is your position on the minimum wage?

It should be higher, I pay a minimum of $12-15 and it is a struggle sometimes as an employer with no negotiating ability with Medicare and insurance. I own a medical clinic with my husband and have 15 employees.

Should environmental and social issues, like ESG (environmental, social, and governance) ratings, be used as criteria in deciding where to invest public monies?

Yes

Investors have the right to invest in any fund they choose with any criteria they choose. I have no business making that decision for other investors nor a legislature limit mine. I have significant investments in the stock markets and bond funds. I do make ethical choices when investing and look at the impact of the funds I choose. I do not believe money comes first. Jesus made choices that were thoughtful and compassionate. I follow that example.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

Under what circumstances can government close churches?

A lethal highly contagious disease like Covid is justification. My husband, an internist, cared for people in the ICU at the local hospital. It was highly traumatic for him. He tried to save many people who ignored public health warnings but could not save most of them who were not vaccinated. Some ignored warnings to avoid crowds, wear masks, and other medical advice that may have saved them. The general public never saw the horrible suffering. Closing schools and churches saved many lives.

Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.

Agree

I am not really sure what this is referring to, but if businesses refuse to serve people based who people are, that seems just mean. I have refused to serve people based on how they treat my employees, if they asked us to do illegal things (insurance fraud) or for non-payment of services, but as a physician, I cannot imagine not treating someone for any other reason. It would be unethical.

HEALTHCARE

What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D) Taxpayer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be defunded.

As a physician in private practice, I think this is a trick question. B is probably the only path forward. I would love to see A be the best choice. I think that is the most biblical approach, but if I had only Medicare rates, my practice would close. Choice D would be an unmitigated disaster and cause untold death and suffering. Healthcare pricing is obtuse and nontransparent.

Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?

A polio, RSV, pertussis, or measles epidemic is inevitable without herd immunity from vaccination. Parents who do not vaccinate their children risk watching them die miserable deaths from preventable illness. I am fully vaccinated, as is my child.

NATIONAL SECURITY

The Chinese Communist Party poses serious military, cyber security, intellectual property, and global economic threats to the United States.

Strongly Agree

The CCP is a mortal enemy and bent on world domination.

Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?

I believe we should support Israel as an ally and as a stabilizing factor in the Middle East. The alliance provides a strategic location in a volatile region. I do not believe innocent Palestinians should be killed with no remorse. I'm mindful that Jesus was a Palestinian Jew. He would definitely disapprove of the current situation.

IMMIGRATION

The U.S. should do more to physically secure the southern border.

Agree

I agreed with passing the border bill that Senate Republicans killed. It was a Republican bill. Obstructing a bill for political gain proved to me that Republicans were never interested in addressing the border problem. Walls never solve a border problem. The wall that was built has fallen down. Criminals cut through it, dig under it, and climb over it. There are better solutions through technology that would not ruin the environment, hurt animals, and keep property owners off their land.

EDUCATION

The state should fund education by allowing dollars to follow the child through programs which protect parents' freedom to choose their child's school – public, private, or homeschool.

Strongly Disagree

Vouchers are a scam. Public schools must be funded fully and teachers paid and treated well. There is no accountability with voucher money. Public schools are the lifeblood of a community. Special needs students would not have to be accepted. Sports and enrichment courses would be lost because public schools are already in dire straits financially. Parents already can choose. I sent my child to public and private schools and never wanted taxpayers to foot the bill. Opportunity for corruption.

VALUES

Children are the most vulnerable members of society and must be protected from abuse, including gender ideology, grooming, and bodily mutilation.

Agree

I agree, up to the "including" part. The public schools do not do this. I have a teenager in my extended family with a different gender identity than at birth. I don't want the legislature telling my nephew and niece how to care for their child. The Lege needs to mind its own business. See Next answer. I have lots of patients and friends who are teachers. This is an imaginary threat.

Parents should have the right to make decisions for their minor children.

Strongly Agree

Unless they are abusive or neglectful, then they should lose parental rights and be placed in a better environment.

Taxpayer funds should be used to provide gender transition services.

Disagree

Probably not. I am very conflicted about this. I personally view this similarly to plastic surgery. Insurance does not cover it unless medically necessary after illness or trauma. Employers can choose to contract with insurance if they desire. There are many more babies born with ambiguous genitalia than the public realize. It is a complex issue and attempts at oversimplification is just silly.

Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.

Strongly Disagree

Marriage is a legal contract with myriad legal and financial consequences. Only a government can define legality. Churches can perform the ceremony but laws define marriage today.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I am a red-letter Christian. I believe in the words and example of Jesus. I am distressed by the frank disdain of many so-called Christians who feel their beliefs should dictate everyone else's. I grew up in the Church of Christ and still donate to a local one but my husband is on the vestry of the Episcopal Church and I feel our beliefs align more closely in that denomination.

ELECTIONS AND VOTING

People should be able to vote without photo identification.

Agree

But they should have their voter registration card with them, they need some form of valid ID, but a student ID should also be accepted.

States should join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact which makes the Electoral College irrelevant.

Strongly Agree

EQUALITY

Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?

Yes. White Christian Nationalism is driven by racism and a desire to return to a caste system from decades ago. Attempts to overthrow the government on January 6, 2021 promises more violence in the future.

I agree with Critical Race Theory (CRT) which asserts that the institutions in the United States are fundamentally racist.

Agree

This is an inaccurate description of CRT. It is a legal theory taught in law school, not high school or college, and it exists today. I see racism as a means of taking property and opportunity from people of color and maintaining a class system that benefits the higher classes, which are currently white people of European descent. This is abhorrent. It is immoral and most certainly would not be acceptable under the teachings of Jesus Christ, as I understand them.

Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.

Neutral

I think the decision should be based on individual details of the athletes by the governing body of the athletic competition, not the Lege. Trans women should not be in men's bathrooms. They are already disproportionate victims of violence. Trans men appear to the world like men. I do not want them in women's restrooms. Maybe the solution is gender-neutral bathrooms, like at my house.

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Which comes closest to your view? (Select all that apply) A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost. C) Stricter environmental laws undermine U.S. energy independence and deter development of reliable electricity sources. D) Climate change is real and requires urgent policy action.

D is absolutely correct. We have failed to steward this wonderful planet and I feel shame and embarrassment that I have been party to this desecration of this marvelous gift from God. I ask for God's guidance to do the right thing with each prayer. Saying this is why I finished answering this survey. I feel God demands I speak for the planet and those less fortunate than I.

What do you believe is the most reliable energy source that will supply the growing demand for electricity?

We live unnecessarily energy extravagant lives. We can live more humbly. I am as guilty as anyone. I view oil as the apple in the Garden of Eden. God buried it out of reach, but with knowledge, we let greed addict us. It's killing us and the planet.

ABOUT YOU

Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.

No

Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.

No

What do you think is the general purpose of government?

Government provides stability for economic growth, rules for fairness and opportunity, public education, roads, water and sewers, police and fire protection, a safety net for children, the sick, disabled and elderly at a price that is fair to taxpayers and does not demand profit for shareholders so it is affordable.

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?

Moderate

I am more of a progressive libertarian. I believe in progress, compassion, and kindness. I also think people who can work to make their place in the world should do so. We need to simplify life for most people. I believe in minding my own business unless someone is going to get hurt. I don't interject myself much into the details of others' lives.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY

I support redirecting funds from police departments to community programs.

Strongly Disagree

We need better trained and specialized law enforcement officers. We do not need officers with a history of violence or mental illness. We cannot reasonably expect officers to intervene in a mental health crisis, function as marital counselors, animal control, and traffic cops without appropriate training. A wrong choice can be fatal. Some of that training takes years and is highly specialized. We need to reinvent policing.

2ND AMENDMENT

What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?

I think we need to rethink gun ownership more like a plane pilot's license. Provide a license to own/buy the weapon they are certified for, with periodic mental health evaluations, so they can purchase guns with their license. I do not think the founders thought anyone anywhere and for any reason could have an AR 15. All guns were basically muskets. Semiautomatic weapons should not be on the streets outside of highly trained military personnel.

Should teachers be allowed to carry guns at school?

Yes

If trained to police or military standards and recertified.
