To me, "separation of church and state" means the government cannot establish an official national religion or interfere with the free exercise of faith. It was never intended to drive religious beliefs or values out of the public square or silence people of faith in civic life. Our Founders understood that religious liberty is one of our most precious rights, and Americans should be free to live out their faith without government coercion or discrimination.
