QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Human life begins at conception and deserves legal protection at every stage until natural death.
Agree
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds or grants from federal, state, or local governments.
Neutral
I support the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which requires health care providers to provide life-saving treatment for infants who survive an attempted abortion.
Agree
If the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, North Carolina should repeal its law allowing abortion up to 20 weeks of pregnancy.
Agree
Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?
As a man, I believe in the sanctity of life. However, individual liberties and freedoms to oneself are equal to mine. With that said, the ultimate decision should rest with the woman whether or not to have an abortion.
ECONOMY
It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has a livable income.
Neutral
Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.
Strongly Agree
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Governments should not discriminate against individuals, organizations or small businesses because of their belief that marriage is only a union of one man and one woman.
Strongly Agree
Governments should define marriage as between one man and one woman; no other definition of marriage should be legalized or supported with taxpayer or public funds.
Neutral
Religious liberty is at risk in the United States and deserves the highest level of protection in the law.
Strongly Agree
I promise to protect the freedom of Christians to share the Gospel and to practice Biblical principles.
Yes
What does "separation of church and state" mean to you?
As James Madison stated in the Federalists papers, "If men were angels, there would be no need for government". The legal right of "We the people" to be able to live our faith without fear of government coercion. The right to practice any faith, free from persecution is a fundamental freedom for all Americans. This is a major reason so many people want immigrate here.
HEALTHCARE
It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has health insurance.
Neutral
How would you promote healthcare coverage that is adequate, affordable and accessible for all?
Very Carefully. This pandemic has shown the shortcomings of our current health care system. Fixing problems begin with empowering the people on the front line.Ask the doctors, nurses and hospital administrators who are in the trenches every day how best to solve issues. Legislators have no idea what goes on inside the hospital. 1.Create a system for recognizing out-of-state health care licenses. 2.Build the Tele-health practices that emerged during this pandemic. 3.Allow pharmacists to administer simple testing and treatment of non chronic diseases 4.Eliminate Certificates Of Need so hospitals can run like a business 5.Look for ways to increase care without dramatically increasing cost
NATIONAL SECURITY
The best way to maintain peace is through a strong military.
Strongly Agree
IMMIGRATION
I am in favor of construction of a wall and other necessary infrastructure on our border that gives complete control over entering and exiting the United States.
Agree
State, sheriff and local law enforcement agencies should be required to participate in the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) 287(g) Program to enhance the safety and security of their communities to identify and detain aliens.
Agree
Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?
We seem to have forgotten the three principles that guided our country and made it the light of the world. First, E Pluribus Unum (One from many), second, liberty and third, In God we trust. People who are seeking better lives and agree to respect and understand our laws, customs and culture should be allowed to enter through proper procedures and guidelines. This is not to say that they must totally change their way of life...just respect and understand what being American means. We need to create a balance between law and the values of the Statue of Liberty, dealing humanly with this important issue.
EDUCATION
Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.
Disagree
VALUES
Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality which is necessary for our system of limited government.
Strongly Agree
I support adding sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression as protected classes in non-discrimination laws.
Strongly Agree
I support allowing public high school students to participate in athletic competition based on the gender with which they identify instead of biological sex.
Neutral
Parents should have the right to know what schools are teaching their children about sex and LGBT issues and should have the right to opt their children out of any instruction to which they object.
Strongly Agree
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I am a proud and grateful Christian. I believe in the Judeo-Christian values, principles, and foundation. Among things important to me are compassion and one's responsibility to help others. Like all of us, I am flawed but I keep working at it.
ABOUT YOU
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and immigration, which of the following best describes you overall?
Moderate
Please provide publicly available information validating your answer to the previous question.
I have learned that the most important ingredient in solving big issues is trust. To develop trust the different voices must feel that they have been heard. I am good listener. Once I hear all sides of the problem I look to answer two questions... 1. What does success look like? 2. What is the cost of the solution? After everyone weighs in,I look to a solution that benefits the most people. I am decisive.
What education or experience qualifies you to hold the office for which you seek election?
My background is rooted in 30 years of business and 10 years of education. Qualifications of any office should be based on one's character; life experiences and the circle of influence. I have been blessed in many ways. Family, friends, and peers would say I have people skills of open communication and compassion... a team player and leader. I am fair minded, a good listener and always try to see the big picture in disagreements. I am also decisive when action is needed. Experiences include managing sales teams of different skill sets, planning, directing, and supervising team sales initiatives. I would guide teams through problem solving and growth opportunities. Same skills were needed for teaching and coaching students and athletes. Lastly, my family and friends from whom I learn daily. I am blessed with a close knit family, friends from elementary through high school, college and beyond. They are guiding lights.
Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.
Proud to say never. My family and friends raised me well.
Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?
In current times, we have forgotten the engine that pays for all the institutions we cherish is a robust economy. The government's role is to collect and distribute. In order to have programs and infrastructure that we need as a society, money needs to come into the government through taxes. Taxes are paid by working people and businesses.
JUDICIAL PHILOSOPHY
I support the use of Sharia law as a basis for legislation and judicial decisions in the United States.
Strongly Disagree
2ND AMENDMENT
Should teachers be allowed to carry guns at school?
No
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
I am a second amendment right supporter. The solutions needed to protect the public go far deeper than restrictions on gun ownership. I believe we as a society need to have safeguards in place to include background checks, a national data base system, and safety classes for gun carrying citizens. Our energies and time would be better spent getting rid of the illegal gun trafficking and monitoring purchases of magazines and large amounts of ammunition.
OTHER IMPORTANT ISSUES
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Disagree
I support the legalization of recreational marijuana.
Disagree
The Electoral College should be abolished.
Strongly Disagree
In priority order, what three areas of legislation do you propose to author or sponsor if elected?
Since I am running as State Representative for Winston Salem area (72nd District) my scope is limited. The biggest expenditures in the NC budget are Education, followed by Health Care, and third Police/ Criminal Law. My energies would be focused in these areas. Other important topics would be conversations at a dinner party. However, my time needs to centered in areas that I can make a difference. I have a five block strategy for education. For more info www.danlawlor72.com As far as healthcare reform, I am in favor of finding the balance between the science and business communities for safe public health and a robust economy. It is important to build trust between the community and law enforcement. A step toward this would be the creation of a bipartisan board consisting of community leaders and law enforcement.
