OTHER INFORMATION
QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Human life begins at conception and deserves legal protection at every stage until natural death.
Agree
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds or grants from federal, state, or local governments.
Agree
I support the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which requires health care providers to provide life-saving treatment for infants who survive an attempted abortion.
Strongly Agree
If the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, North Carolina should repeal its law allowing abortion up to 20 weeks of pregnancy.
Agree
Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?
Just as self-defense is permitted in other aspects of the law, imminent danger to the life of the mother. No woman should be required to raise a child she does not want. However, the choice should not be between raising a child and killing the child. Adoption laws should be liberalized to allow more children to be placed in stable, loving homes as an alternative to death.
ECONOMY
It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has a livable income.
Disagree
Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.
Agree
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Governments should not discriminate against individuals, organizations or small businesses because of their belief that marriage is only a union of one man and one woman.
Agree
Governments should define marriage as between one man and one woman; no other definition of marriage should be legalized or supported with taxpayer or public funds.
Agree
Religious liberty is at risk in the United States and deserves the highest level of protection in the law.
Agree
I promise to protect the freedom of Christians to share the Gospel and to practice Biblical principles.
Yes
What does "separation of church and state" mean to you?
Churches do not operate the government, and there is no official state religion. There is no religious test for holding government office. The government allows the free exercise of religion, and properly interprets that the freedom of religion means that no one is forced to participate in religion. However, that does not mean that a person should be able to use government power to drive all religious expression from public view.
HEALTHCARE
It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has health insurance.
Disagree
How would you promote healthcare coverage that is adequate, affordable and accessible for all?
We need to find ways of using transparent pricing and market forces to affect insurance costs and medical/prescription costs, in the same way that such pricing and market forces have driven down the costs of other technologies, such as cell phones, computers, and televisions, and made those things almost universally available.
NATIONAL SECURITY
The best way to maintain peace is through a strong military.
Strongly Agree
IMMIGRATION
I am in favor of construction of a wall and other necessary infrastructure on our border that gives complete control over entering and exiting the United States.
Agree
State, sheriff and local law enforcement agencies should be required to participate in the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) 287(g) Program to enhance the safety and security of their communities to identify and detain aliens.
Agree
Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?
That is a federal issue. However, immigration reform is not reasonably possible until our borders are secured.
EDUCATION
Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.
Disagree
VALUES
Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality which is necessary for our system of limited government.
Agree
I support adding sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression as protected classes in non-discrimination laws.
Disagree
I support allowing public high school students to participate in athletic competition based on the gender with which they identify instead of biological sex.
Disagree
Parents should have the right to know what schools are teaching their children about sex and LGBT issues and should have the right to opt their children out of any instruction to which they object.
Agree
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I am a Christian who believes that this nation has been preserved by God as a bastion of liberty unlike any other nation in the history of the world. I believe that strong families are the best and most effective and efficient form of government, and all other forms of government need to consider how their actions affect or support stable families.
ABOUT YOU
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and immigration, which of the following best describes you overall?
Conservative
Please provide publicly available information validating your answer to the previous question.
My record as a District Court Judge shows a commitment to following the law, and supporting a safe, law-abiding community.
What education or experience qualifies you to hold the office for which you seek election?
My experience in law as a family law judge, in leadership roles, and in my life as a husband, father, grandfather, and as a former public school teacher has given me the opportunity to see firsthand the impact that the laws of the legislature and appeals court rulings have had on literally TENS OF THOUSANDS of individuals and families. This experience uniquely qualifies me to look at proposals and anticipate their unintended consequences. Furthermore, my background as a judge gives me stronger insights on how to craft legislation to better withstand incessant appeals and judicial attempts to undermine or overturn that legislation.
Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.
No.
Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?
As a county commissioner, I kept an eye on the future, promoting the development of a new general aviation facility which is now the 5th busiest in the state, promoting the construction of two essential water supply reservoirs, creating a local community college campus, and developing the local tourism authority for economic growth. In 24 years as a District Court Judge, I ruled in over 100,000 cases. My decisions were reversed by the Court of Appeals only 8 times, and were NEVER reversed by the North Carolina Supreme Court. I was designated as the Chief District Court Judge by five consecutive Chief Justices of the North Carolina Supreme Court. Finally, I am a recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest civilian honor given by the State of North Carolina to one of its citizens.
JUDICIAL PHILOSOPHY
I support the use of Sharia law as a basis for legislation and judicial decisions in the United States.
Strongly Disagree
2ND AMENDMENT
Should teachers be allowed to carry guns at school?
Yes
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
Gun ownership or possession by those who are convicted felons or who have a documented history of mental health problems resulting in violent threats or behavior should not be permitted. Beyond that, laws which restrict otherwise law-abiding citizens in their lawful ownership of weapons merely puts the community at greater risk from criminals, who are not going to abide by gun laws anyway.
OTHER IMPORTANT ISSUES
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Disagree
I support the legalization of recreational marijuana.
Disagree
The Electoral College should be abolished.
Strongly Disagree
In priority order, what three areas of legislation do you propose to author or sponsor if elected?
First, expand resources for our public schools, while at the same time expanding responsible school choice options for all students, not just the wealthy. Second, continue to reduce any unnecessary economic regulations and gradually reduce tax rates further to strengthen our economy and attract new and better jobs. Third, look for ways to responsibly protect and preserve our water, air, and agricultural resources, since water, air, and healthy food are all essential to life.
