A candid discussion needs to be had regarding the proper role of government with respect to retirement and disability. The system is simply unsustainable. While commitments made to the current generation must be honored, we need to look at alternatives for future generations. In the meantime, changes that would be helpful include: 1) Raising the the retirement age 2) Switch the indexing of initial benefits from wages to prices 3) Reform disability insurance to encourage work
What government spending would you reduce in order to balance the budget?
Balancing the budget will be impossible unless the government is willing to reduce entitlement spending...which the government is required to spend by law. Entitlement spending currently accounts for more than half of federal spending. Sadly, elected officials have "kicked the can down the road" for decades by passing continuing resolutions rather than addressing the issue through the appropriations process. I would also sign onto and help push Rand Paul’s “Penny Plan Balanced Budget” proposal.

What does "separation of church and state" mean to you?
The question we should be asking is what did it mean to Thomas Jefferson when he penned this now famous phrase to the Danbury Baptist Association in 1802. Thomas Jefferson was reassuring church leadership that the government would never be allowed to dictate or mandate oversight to the church in America. He never envisioned the church NOT having a voice in the public square. We are a people who have been guaranteed freedom OF religion... not freedom FROM religion. The phrase “Separation of Church & State” has been warped from its original intent and used as a weapon to ban expressions of religion in our nation. This should not be. We are a nation built on Judeo-Christian values and those beliefs are free to be expressed in the public square (i.e. Schools, Courthouses, Community Centers, etc.).

How would you promote healthcare coverage that is adequate, affordable and accessible for all?
Take the handcuffs off the free market and let the “Invisible Hand” of competition drive down prices and increase quality. Government intervention is NOT the answer to the healthcare problem.... it IS the problem. I will champion price transparency and policies that allow competition to thrive. When free market policies like these take hold prices will drop and quality of care will go up, and coverage will be more attainable for all US citizens.

Maintain a strong military, seek out and quickly neutralize radical terrorists around the world that have threatened American citizens and interests, and continue to build strong relationships with strategic middle eastern countries like Israel.

What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
Until the Constitution is properly amended to remove the wording “shall not be infringed”, the right of the people to keep and bear arms CANNOT be infringed. A restriction is an infringement, therefore no lawmaker has the legal authority to authorize a restriction in anyway on gun ownership.

Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?
At one point in our nation it was, but thankfully it is not anymore. We have made great strides in the fight for equal rights. This doesn’t mean, however, racism will not try to show its ugly head ever again. It most certainly will because we live in a world where there is evil. Anytime racism is realized and seen, it should be dealt with swiftly. We are all God’s masterpieces (Eph 2:10). Let us always reinforce and teach our children that there is much more that unites us than divides.
