Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?

To protect the life of the mother.

What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of radical Islamic terrorism?

The public needs to be better educated about the very real threat posed by Sharia law and radical Islamic terrorism. We also need to better differentiate between Muslims who would like to share the freedoms granted by our Constitution and the radical Islamic terrorists who pose a threat to us.

What in the nature of mankind caused America’s Founders to carefully define, separate, and limit powers in the Constitution?

They were well aware that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. They worked very hard to limit the powers of the federal government and they provided three branches of government at the federal level to provide additional checks and balances. Many of the problems we now face result from past failures to respect the limits they attempted to impose.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I try to live as a Christian, loving the Lord and trying to treat others as I would want to be treated.

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and immigration, which of the following best describes you overall?

Conservative

Please provide publicly available information validating your answer to the previous question.

I received the Liberty Tree Award from FreedomWorks based upon my record as a member of the NC General Assembly where I served 3 terms in the House and 1 in the Senate. As a freshman Senator, I was elected Senate Republican Whip by my fellow Senators in recognition of my effectiveness in advancing the Conservative Cause in the House. I spoke at several TEA party rallies as well as actively opposing Common Core and serving several years as NC State Director of the National Right to Read Foundation (www.nrrf.org) promoting phonics to improve literacy.

How would you promote healthcare coverage that is adequate, affordable and accessible for all?

As I write this, the NC House just passed and sent to the Senate a bill, H184, to study Treasurer Dale Folwell's attempt to provide transparency on prices charged the state health plan. The people who make money from over-charging the public fear transparency and competition more than vampires, which makes me think we need a lot more pricing transparency and competition. Competition protects the customer far more effectively than a government monopoly ever will. People need more choices in health care, not a government program that arbitrarily restricts availability of services.

What role should government play in boosting the economy?

The government has a role in protecting public safety and national security, but picking winners and losers, promoting one industry at the expense of another, is not a proper function of government. Government regulation without regard to cost/benefit or the proper role of government needs to be reined in. Government regulation aimed at preventing fraud and promoting transparency, including exposing and countering the attempts of foreign nations to wage economic war upon us, is helpful and necessary. As we've seen in the last couple of years, reducing the weight of government lets the engine of the economy operate much more efficiently.

What changes should be made to the tax code?

The Infernal Revenue Code needs to be drastically simplified so everyone, not just tax experts, can understand it. Why should a farm or factory worker or any other low or middle income taxpayer ever pay more income tax than someone making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year because the wealthier person enjoys deductions and credits not available to the average citizen? On the other hand, we all have the same 24 hours a day. Why should one worker be allowed to pay no tax on their income while some politicians are pushing a 90% marginal tax rate? The higher the marginal tax rate on the wealthy, the more lobbyists hired to get special provisions in the tax code. How is that working for us? Our tax code has been a huge drag on our economy, as demonstrated by the results of the recent tax reform effort. There’s still a lot of room for improvement, in the Code and the economy. I’m ready for Tax Reform 2.0.

What is the best way to bring down unemployment?

Keep the economy growing and enforce our immigration laws. Legal residents, including legal immigrants, have a hard time competing for jobs with those who come here illegally and create an uneven playing field.

How would you guarantee Social Security benefits for future generations?

The national debt is a tremendous threat to social security and no one wants to talk about it. We need to control government spending so interest on the national debt doesn't crowd out everything else. Growing our economy, so that there are more workers contributing more money than is being withdrawn from the fund is the best way to guarantee our seniors get the money they have been led to expect. Government must quit using the social security "trust fund" to finance government spending in excess of tax revenues. Government must quit spending more than our citizens can afford and bridging the gap by borrowing from our children and grandchildren.

What education or experience qualifies you to hold the office for which you seek election?

As a CPA, I was taught my job is to serve the public. CPA stands for Certified Public Accountant. I know what to look for to be able to assure the public that someone hasn't been cooking the books. I also spent years working on tax matters for all kinds and sizes of clients. I even had a US Senator as a client. Just think about it, most of the people voting on tax laws in Congress probably don't do their own tax return, much less understand the complex rules their laws and regulations impose on others. I had no idea how valuable that background was until I was elected to the NC legislature, where I won an award from the US Small Business Administration as the Accountant who did the most in the country to help small business for pushing through the repeal of a large number of nuisance taxes. I also successfully sponsored the repeal of NC's inheritance tax, an odd death tax that particularly penalized childlessness. Plus I won the Guardian of Small Business Award from NFIB
