OTHER INFORMATION

QUESTIONNAIRE

RIGHT TO LIFE

Human life begins at conception and deserves legal protection at every stage until natural death.

Strongly Agree

Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds or grants from federal, state, or local governments.

Strongly Agree

I support the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which requires health care providers to provide life-saving treatment for infants who survive an attempted abortion.

Strongly Agree

Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?

This question goes to the heart of my campaign. It is a complicated problem and most candidates will give A three word slogan or a 15 second soundbite. I have real solutions for this complicated problem. As a Christian (Presbyterian for over 50 years) I am pro life. As a physician specializing in radiology, sub specializing in ultrasound, I see pregnancies every day. I have counseled hundreds of pregnant patients. As a matter of fact, I have convinced many patients considering abortion to carry their pregnancies to term and put the babies up for adoption. The state of Tennessee Department of social services came to my office and requested that I stop counseling patients because the “abortion providers“ were complaining that I was decreasing the abortion rate too much, and they were losing business. I have set up many private adoptions, and consider those to be some of my most successful milestones in my medical practice.

ECONOMY

It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has a livable income.

Disagree

Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.

Strongly Agree

How would you guarantee Social Security benefits for future generations?

Social Security benefits is another serious issue that needs to be addressed. First and foremost, persons who are retired, or soon to retire should see no change in the current system. Our younger generations must be provided with a sound system of saving for a portion of their retirement. But remember that their contributions need to support our current retirees. That is what makes this a complex problem that requires experts who know how to create a better system. As Senator, I will work to get those experts working on this issue so retirement security is assured for current and future retirees.

What government spending would you reduce in order to balance the budget?

Balancing the budget is always one of those sound bite phrases. Cut taxes and shrink the budget and all will be good. Or if you agree to raise taxes, we will agree to certain budget cuts to balance the budget. This has been the political refrain since the days of Ronald Reagan. I have written about our national debt and how to balance the budget with sound fiscal policy. My solution is found at RealSolutionsforTN.com

Under what circumstances should taxpayers help pay off existing student loans?

There are numerous things that need to changed about Student Loans. One of them is not having the tax payers assume the cost of the loans. Colleges and universities need to be more transparent with students about the loans they take out and their ability to pay them back. This is a cash cow for universities and they need to be held more responsible.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

Governments should not discriminate against individuals, organizations or small businesses because of their belief that marriage is only a union of one man and one woman.

Strongly Agree

Religious liberty is at risk in the United States and deserves the highest level of protection in the law.

Strongly Agree

I promise to protect the freedom of Christians to share the Gospel and to practice Biblical principles.

Yes

What does "separation of church and state" mean to you?

The First Amendment does not say anything about separation of Church and State. The First Amendment does say that: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof". The founders did not want the Federal Government to set up church of the United States like the Church of England. Many of our Founding Fathers actually believed that church (religion) went hand in hand with the virtue of the Country and served as a guiding hand in the good governance of all people.

HEALTHCARE

It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has health insurance.

Disagree

I support the elimination of private healthcare insurance.

Strongly Disagree

How would you promote healthcare coverage that is adequate, affordable and accessible for all?

This is a difficult question to answer simply. What I can say is that I have an extensive policy paper on the subject of returning to you, the patient, the control over your healthcare, and thus your health care coverage. The paper can be found at RealSolutionsforTN.com. The solutions listed in the paper are meant to address health care for persons in all stages of life, so the concepts are meant to address general insurance, medicaid and Medicare.

NATIONAL SECURITY

The best way to maintain peace is through a strong military.

Strongly Agree

What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of radical Islamic terrorism?

First, we must recognize that our First Amendment Rights protect the each individual to practice his and her religion. And to that end, the Islamic faith is afforded all the protections of this country. But let be clear, terrorism based on a religion is not a protected religious practice. While the U.S. cannot control what happens in other countries, we can do a better job here at home making sure people of all religions know the benefits of being in the U.S. and that we respects their religion and culture

IMMIGRATION

I am in favor of construction of a wall and other necessary infrastructure on our border that gives complete control over entering and exiting the United States.

Strongly Agree

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) should be abolished.

Strongly Disagree

State and federal funds should be denied to any public or private entity, including but not limited to sanctuary cities, that are not in compliance with immigration laws.

Agree

Employers should be required to use E-verify to confirm the eligibility of their employees to work in the United States.

Agree

Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?

Immigration reform allows only immediate relatives of legal residents. This means an emigrant’s spouse and minor children. U.S. citizens would still to be able to sponsor parents for temporary visa upon proof of health insurance and financial support. A merit based immigration system means that we accept those persons who are most likely to contribute long term to the growth of the country. As James Madison said during the Constitutional Convention of 1787, we should, “invite foreigners of merit and republican principles among us. America is indebted to the emigration for her settlement and prosperity.” We can continue that welcoming attitude by adopting a merit based system. The universal granting of citizenship to all children born in the U.S needs to end. Persons coming to the U.S. illegally or travel visas, do not meet the intent of legislation adopted since the 14th Amendment. The legislation was to be bestow citizenship upon persons who owe their allegiance to the U.S.

EDUCATION

Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.

Disagree

VALUES

Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality which is necessary for our system of limited government.

Strongly Agree

I support adding sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression as protected classes in non-discrimination laws.

Strongly Agree

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I am a practicing Presbyterian for over 50 years. I am a God fearing man, who is pro-life and a firm believer that Jesus Christ our Savior asks us everyday to do good for our fellow man.

ABOUT YOU

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and immigration, which of the following best describes you overall?

Conservative

Please provide publicly available information validating your answer to the previous question.

I served on the Shelby County Board of Commissioners for six years and was chairman of the Budget Committee. The Commission had a narrow majority for Democrats, and a Democrat Mayor. The budget proposal was to include a 10 percent raise for the mayor and his administration. When the budget process was over, the mayor, the administration and the county commissioners all took a 5 percent pay cut.

Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.

No.

Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?

I am a business owner, a physician, and an entrepreneur. The common thread of these three things is, that when I find a problem I work hard to solve it. I have a degree in electrical engineering before I became a doctor. The two together were important as I worked with a team of doctors who brought Ultra-Sound technology to modern medical practice. I have a long history of seeing problems and creating real solutions. I want to take that energy and drive to Washington to implement real solutions for Tennessee and this great Country.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY

Mandatory minimum sentencing should be required and enforced for violent crimes.

Strongly Agree

2ND AMENDMENT

What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?

The Right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. That says everything.

OTHER IMPORTANT ISSUES

I support BDS (boycott, divestment, and sanction) against Israel if they refuse to allow the creation of a Palestinian state.

Strongly Disagree

I support the legalization of recreational marijuana.

Disagree

Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.

Strongly Disagree

The Electoral College should be abolished.

Strongly Disagree

In priority order, what three areas of legislation do you propose to author or sponsor if elected?

1. Reform the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, to allow the United States and it citizens to sue foreign powers to willfully and deliberately withhold information from us and the rest of the world that results in additional harm to the Country and our citizens. 2. I would mandate that the purchasing power of the U.S. government be used to buy U.S. made good. This is particularly needed for critical goods like for military and medical services. This is not a restriction on private industry, it the use of our tax dollars buying U.S. goods and closing loopholes that allow the government to buy foreign supplies. 3. I will co-sponsor any tax reform bill that promotes pro-growth policies. We don't need taxes that promote special interests. We need tax policies that encourage the expansion of all industry here in the U.S. and promotes the attraction of U.S. based companies with overseas operations to return home.

Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?

Certainly the person or people who are subjects of racial disparity “put down, ignored, marginalized, or treated with less then normal respect, and disrespected” have made it abundantly clear they they do not feel any sense of security. The group of individuals that have racist tendencies and ideas, in my opinion, or operating from a sense of fear. They seem to be afraid that the minorities might upset the “status quo“. This group certainly does not feel a sense of security. Therefore yes, racism does threaten domestic security, not only physically but in the minds of American citizens. We remain the land of the free, with liberty and justice for all. The assurance of ‘justice for all’ and the IMPLEMENTATION of justice for all is the best treatment for threats to domestic security.
