QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?
To save the life of the mother. I presented the bill which led to the Dobbs case on the floor of the Mississippi Senate and in the Mississippi Public Health Committee. I authored the Senate version of that bill although we ultimately took the House version of the bill to committee and the floor. I defended the bill and got it passed overwhelmingly in committee and on the Senate floor. I also authored the bill back when i was in the Mississippi House called our "trigger law" which stated that once Roe v. Wade was overturned abortions in Mississippi would no longer be allowed. I'm very proud of my strong Pro-Life record in the Mississippi legislature.
I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.
Strongly Disagree
I do not support euthanasia as it runs counter to the culture of life which we are fighting so hard for in Mississippi.
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants and Medicaid funding).
Strongly Agree
I have voted in favor of legislation to prohibit Mississippi Medicaid from paying for any abortion services in our State.
ECONOMY
What changes, if any, should be made to the tax code?
I am in favor of eliminating the income tax in Mississippi. During the eight years that I served as Senate Finance Chairman, we passed multiple bills to reduce taxes in Mississippi. I hope soon that we will be able to finally completely eliminate the state income tax in Mississippi.
What government spending would you reduce in order to balance the budget?
I would vote to continue reducing spending on social programs in Mississippi and will continue fighting against Medicaid expansion in Mississippi which we cannot afford.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.
Strongly Disagree
I couldn't disagree more with this statement. We should all have our constitutionally protected rights of religion and speech and right to assembly. I believe that any laws requiring citizens to violate their strongly held religious beliefs are antithetical to our American constitution and should be struck down by the Courts and not approved by our legislative bodies.
Under what circumstances should government close churches?
No circumstances warrant the government closing down churches.
HEALTHCARE
What most closely matches your view on healthcare? A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare options (includes "universal healthcare," "Medicare for all," etc.); B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options; C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but the government should reform healthcare to maximize private health insurance options; D) Taxpayer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be defunded.
C - I believe that as citizens have paid in for these programs over the years to eliminate them at this time would be to take money from citizens who have paid in for them and that would be wrong. We must reform these programs to make them viable.
Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?
There are no circumstances in which the government should require vaccinations without exemptions available to all who wish to opt out of the vaccinations.
NATIONAL SECURITY
What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of Islamic terrorism?
Islamic terrorists should be tracked down and eliminated. Their sanctuaries should be destroyed as to allow them to remain free is to allow them to continue to attack our people and our way of life. Our citizens should not, however, lose their rights of personal freedom in order to combat terrorism, nor should we allow the government to spy on our citizens in the name of national security.
IMMIGRATION
The U.S. should do more to physically secure the southern border.
Strongly Agree
We currently don't have a secure southern border and as a result we have countless illegals pouring across that southern border along with disease, drugs and human traffickers and terrorists. The US must erect a permanent wall and man it with agents who will enforce it. I am not opposed to legal immigration but the current situation is untenable and unsafe for our national security and must be remedied.
Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?
We should have a workable immigration system as we need more laborers in America to run the factories and labor-intensive businesses. However, there must be a secure border first and foremost so that we can control who comes and goes across the border into and out of our nation. We need a merit-based system of immigration that rewards high-achievers and helps meet the demands of our country's economy.
EDUCATION
The state should prioritize education funding by allowing dollars to follow the child instead of focusing on programs and administrators.
Strongly Agree
I support education vouchers for parents to use to pay for their children's education whether it be homeschool, public, private or parochial school. The monies should follow the student to whatever education choice the parent feels is best for their child.
If you support giving parents more educational options, please list all of the following options that apply and in priority order: A) A universal Education Savings Account (ESA) program; B) An ESA program for low-income children only; C) Expanding tax credits for businesses to give to private schools; D) Expanding public charter schools; E) Allowing homeschoolers to take classes at the local public school.
A, C, E and D.C I support education vouchers for parents to use to pay for their children's education whether it be homeschool, public, private or parochial school. The monies should follow the student to whatever education choice the parent feels is best for their child.
What most closely matches your view on pornography? A) I agree with the American Library Association that any person of any age should have access to any book; B) Library collections, displays and events should be curated using age-appropriate guidelines, similar to what we do for movies (G, PG, R, etc.); C) Mississippi libraries should follow state laws that prevent pornography from being accessible to minors.
C. I presented the bill on the Senate floor this session that mirrors answer C.
VALUES
What most closely matches your view on marriage? A) Anything goes; B) Marriage between one man and one woman should be promoted and encouraged; C) A divorce should be hard to get; D) Marriage is important, but no-fault divorce should be allowed.
B
Judeo-Christian values establish a framework of morality that is necessary for our system of limited government.
Strongly Agree
Our country was founded on Judeo-Christian values and the further we stray from these origins the more social problems we will continue to have in our country. The violence, poverty, lawlessness that we witness today will only get worse unless our nation returns to it's founding principles and priorities and turn back to God. Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD.
I support adding gender identity as a specially protected class in non-discrimination laws.
Strongly Disagree
I presented the bill prohibiting transgender surgeries on those under 18 and banning the use of puberty blockers in those under 18.
Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.
Strongly Agree
Amen
I agree with Critical Race Theory (CRT) which asserts that the institutions in the United States are fundamentally racist.
Strongly Disagree
I could not disagree with this statement more strongly. I have voted in favor of banning the teaching of CRT in Mississippi schools.
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I am a born-again Christian, flawed, sinful but saved by God's amazing grace. I strive to reflect my strongly-held Christian beliefs in my legislation filed, presented and voted in favor of and while I fail to meet God's standards often, I do strive to be more like Him and to reflect his love in my life and work.
ELECTIONS AND VOTING
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Strongly Disagree
I authored the voter identification initiative a number of years ago that ultimately passed and that is why we now have Voter ID requirements in all Mississippi State and local elections.
What most closely matches your view on ballot measures? A) Ballot measures should be able to amend the constitution with few, if any, restrictions; B) Ballot measures should only be able to propose changes to laws when signatures are collected from people all across the state; C) The current process of allowing the Legislature to propose constitutional amendments will result in the best outcomes.
A. The initiative and referendum process should be reinstated immediately.
EQUALITY
Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.
Strongly Disagree
Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?
Racism is a terrible thing and we should strive to eliminate it in our personal lives but this is not the purview of the government. We are all created equal and no one should be treated as lesser than someone else because of their race. The constitution protects individuals' worth and laws should not discriminate against a class based upon race. However, we must eradicate racism in our hearts through love of God and recognizing that God created us all and loves us all and we must teach these things in our Churches. That is not something the government can legislate.
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT
Which comes closest to your view? A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost.
A
ABOUT YOU
What do you think is the general purpose of government?
National security and providing roads and infrastructure for life's necessities: like safe drinking water and secure borders, is the general purpose of government.
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Very Conservative
I have been a staunch fiscal and social conservative for many years and my voting record bears that out as does the bills that I have authored and advocated for over the years.
Please provide publicly available information, including interviews and media reports, validating your answer to the previous question (other than your website).
I am often in the local media in the Hattiesburg area and during the legislative session in the Jackson market as well. A quick Google search should give you plenty of media coverage to look through if you desire.
Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized in either civil or criminal court for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.
No
What else would you like voters to know about you, including your legislative priorities?
I have long worked for the Pro-Life cause and am thrilled with the Dobbs case and with the fact that the bill I authored in the Senate (we ultimately passed the House bill but the Senate version was identical) was the basis of the overturning of Roe v. Wade. I argued that case in the Senate Public Health Committee as well as on the Senate floor.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY
Police officers should be personally immune from prosecution for conduct consistent with departmental policy (qualified immunity) while on duty.
Strongly Agree
I support redirecting funds from police departments to mental health and community programs.
Strongly Disagree
2ND AMENDMENT
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
The only restrictions I support are those against mentally ill persons having access to guns or some felons if the law states as a penalty for a certain crime that the felon loses their gun rights. Otherwise, I do not support restrictions on gun ownership.
Victims of gun violence should be able to sue firearms dealers and manufacturers.
Strongly Disagree
The manufacturer of the gun is not responsible for what the criminal does - the criminal is responsible for their own actions and should be held to account.
