QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Human life begins at conception and deserves legal protection at every stage until natural death.
Strongly Disagree
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds or grants from federal, state, or local governments.
Strongly Disagree
I support the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which requires health care providers to provide life-saving treatment for infants who survive an attempted abortion.
Disagree
Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?
I am a fierce champion of Roe v. Wade and women’s reproductive rights, and am proud of my endorsement from Planned Parenthood Action Fund. I oppose all policies that limit a person's ability to access contraception or abortion, particularly given that such restrictions disproportionately harm and endanger women of color. Everyone should be able to make their own decisions about their health and whether to start a family, with the counsel of their families, faith and healthcare providers. I do not believe that politicians should have any control over these decisions.
ECONOMY
It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has a livable income.
Strongly Agree
Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.
Agree
How would you guarantee Social Security benefits for future generations?
Many people in my district rely on Social Security and disability benefits to survive. I am fully committed to protecting the program, expanding its benefits, and providing the funding necessary to ensure that it is administered rapidly and accurately. This can be paid for by eliminating the SS income tax cap and increasing taxes on the incomes of corporations and the top 1%. Another way to bolster the Social Security program is to prevent misclassification of employees as independent contractors. Companies like Uber have been doing this for years to avoid providing employee benefits and contributing their fair share in Social Security taxes. I sponsored "The Gig is Up Act" to address this issue and will continue to fight against similar practices that undermine Social Security. Guaranteeing retirement security must also be achieved by implementing a healthcare system that is affordable and passing policies to decrease the costs of prescription drugs.
What government spending would you reduce in order to balance the budget?
Military spending should be cut dramatically. We spend more on our military than the next 10 highest spending countries combined, despite the fact that public schools are underfunded, families are homeless, and citizens are rationing their insulin to avoid going broke. We can reallocate funding without compromising national security. We can fund federal programs such as Medicare for All, public housing, & the Green New Deal by taxing corporations and the top 1%, and cutting the defense budget.
Under what circumstances should taxpayers help pay off existing student loans?
Current policies result in the majority of young people entering the workforce with thousands of dollars of debt, which impacts their ability to save money and impedes economic growth more broadly. I support student loan forgiveness for military enlistees, healthcare frontline workers during the pandemic, and other public servants. I believe we should provide tuition and debt free public college for families making up to $125,000 per year, which can be funded by a tax on Wall Street speculation.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Governments should not discriminate against individuals, organizations or small businesses because of their belief that marriage is only a union of one man and one woman.
Strongly Disagree
Religious liberty is at risk in the United States and deserves the highest level of protection in the law.
Disagree
I promise to protect the freedom of Christians to share the Gospel and to practice Biblical principles.
No
What does "separation of church and state" mean to you?
Separation of Church and State to me means that religion, on both an individual and institutional level, should play as minimal a role in government as possible. Elected officials or appointees should not have any financial or relational ties to the Church. No politician or administration should use their power to advance their personal religious ideology, whether via of rhetoric or policy. Unfortunately, this occurs often, particularly in the form of laws that enable anti-LGBTQ discrimination or prevent access to abortion. The United States is a multicultural society founded (hypocritically, given the colonial history of imposing Christianity onto African slaves and Native Americans) on principles of religious liberty and freedom from oppression. While I do not support religion as a justification for discrimination, I do believe that people should be able to practice their own religion/spirituality as long as they do not impose these belief systems on others.
HEALTHCARE
It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has health insurance.
Strongly Agree
I support the elimination of private healthcare insurance.
Strongly Agree
How would you promote healthcare coverage that is adequate, affordable and accessible for all?
I believe that the only way to ensure truly accessible healthcare is to implement a single-payer system such as Medicare for All. Even the most comprehensive public-option plans leave thousands of people uninsured or underinsured, and the COVID-19 pandemic has illuminated the dangers of tying healthcare coverage to employment. Removing private insurance agencies from the system would save billions of dollars in administrative costs and free up hospital resources to be dedicated to patient care. Healthcare should not be provided on the basis of one's ability to pay. No one else should die in this country from a preventable illness that went untreated because of our prohibitively expensive for-profit healthcare coverage system.
NATIONAL SECURITY
The best way to maintain peace is through a strong military.
Disagree
What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of radical Islamic terrorism?
I am a firm believer in diplomacy-first foreign policy, and see peacemaking in the Middle East as a solution to Islamic terrorism. United States intervention in Middle Eastern politics is partially responsible for the current destabilization in the region. We should withdraw troops and invest instead in humanitarian aid and peaceful diplomacy. I am strongly opposed to any policies that discriminate on the basis of religion or race; my goal is for this country to welcome of people of all faiths & nationalities. I stand against anti-terrorism programs that discriminate against Muslims, including President Trump's Muslim ban. It is also important to acknowledge that the domestic far-right (including neo-Nazis and white nationalists) has been the driver behind many more terrorist incidents in the United States than has Islamic extremism. The government must do more to prevent acts of violence such as those carried out by Kyle Rittenhouse, Robert Bowers, and Patrick Crusius.
IMMIGRATION
I am in favor of construction of a wall and other necessary infrastructure on our border that gives complete control over entering and exiting the United States.
Strongly Disagree
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) should be abolished.
Strongly Agree
State and federal funds should be denied to any public or private entity, including but not limited to sanctuary cities, that are not in compliance with immigration laws.
Strongly Disagree
Employers should be required to use E-verify to confirm the eligibility of their employees to work in the United States.
Strongly Disagree
Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?
I do not believe that one's ability to immigrate to this country should be contingent upon education or technical skill. For centuries, the US has taken in people fleeing war, persecution and economic hardship, and each of these waves of immigration has contributed to the culture and economy of this country. While we must certainly continue to encourage immigration of skilled professionals in fields such as medicine and computer science, we must also uphold our commitment to welcoming immigrants and refugees fleeing for their own safety, looking for a chance to make a living and provide a good education to their children. As a Native American woman, my family has experienced the violence of government-enforced family separation. I will advocate for immigration policy that keeps families together, including legislation to provide a path to citizenship for the undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States.
EDUCATION
Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.
Strongly Agree
VALUES
Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality which is necessary for our system of limited government.
Strongly Disagree
I support adding sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression as protected classes in non-discrimination laws.
Strongly Agree
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I am Catholic, and the Catholic values of Pueblo people have been to care about each other and respect all cultures. My faith is part of what guides my desire to create a political system that uplifts and protects everyone, especially those most marginalized and disempowered.
ABOUT YOU
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and immigration, which of the following best describes you overall?
Liberal
Please provide publicly available information validating your answer to the previous question.
I believe the government should play a greater role in protecting human rights, preserving the environment, and regulating the economy to prevent wealth from accumulating in the hands of the elite. My support of Medicare for All is an example of this: it is clear that the current privatized healthcare system is prohibiting people from accessing healthcare, so a government-funded system is necessary to ensure that everyone in this country can access medical care, which I see as a basic human right. I describe my political ideology as progressive, rather than liberal: I support government-funded social services programs and movements fighting for equality for racial minorities, women, LGBTQ people, people with disabilities, undocumented people, religious minorities, etc.
Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.
No.
Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?
Did not answer
CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY
Mandatory minimum sentencing should be required and enforced for violent crimes.
Disagree
2ND AMENDMENT
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
I support the ban on bump stocks, military-grade weapons, large-capacity magazines and other assault rifles, as well as the proposed nation-wide gun buyback program. We must implement more rigorous background checks, close loopholes in gun ownership rules, and strengthen oversight to ensure compliance from licensed sellers. The government should fund mental health counseling services and pass campaign finance reforms that limit the ability of the NRA to influence the decisions of politicians.
OTHER IMPORTANT ISSUES
I support BDS (boycott, divestment, and sanction) against Israel if they refuse to allow the creation of a Palestinian state.
Did not answer
I support the legalization of recreational marijuana.
Strongly Agree
Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.
Strongly Agree
The Electoral College should be abolished.
Strongly Agree
In priority order, what three areas of legislation do you propose to author or sponsor if elected?
1. An Indigenous rights bill that provides federal funding to Native American governments for healthcare, education, housing and public safety. I plan to push for more legislation to address the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women. 2. A bill to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions by investing in renewable energy infrastructure, public transportation, and sustainable agriculture. 3. An bill to provide universal free childcare and pre-K.
Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?
Yes, I strongly believe that racism is a domestic security threat that must be urgently addressed. From individual hate crimes perpetuated by white nationalists to institutionally racist systems that drive public health crises and mass incarceration, racism in the US threatens domestic stability and democracy while undermining our moral authority on the international stage. President Trump has promoted a culture that condones xenophobic violence and emboldens white supremacists. A wide range of recent hate crimes qualify as acts of domestic terrorism, although federal agencies have been slow to allocate sufficient resources to combating this form of terrorism.
