What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of radical Islamic terrorism?

Besides the Church praying and doing spiritual warfare for revival and sending missionaries into this fight, the U.S. can “help” eradicate the threat; it can never be fully eradicated. Violence and discrimination against women, minorities, and any non-Islamic peoples are at the core of Islamic teachings. Denial of that fact has allowed radical Islamists to proliferate not only in the Middle East, but around the world. Therefore, the #1 thing that the U.S. can do is bypass political correctness by honestly characterizing the threat. Next, we must convince our allies to do the same in order to keep those who would act on radical ideology pushed to the fringes and contained. It will take vigilance on a scale that cannot be achieved solely by the United States. Civilized and aspiring nations must cooperate and as appropriate share resources and intelligence to prevent terrorists from gaining any geographic foothold.

What in the nature of mankind caused America’s Founders to carefully define, separate, and limit powers in the Constitution?

The nature of mankind is inherently selfish, and I believe desire for accountability came from wisdom, divine inspiration, and experience. History shows where power is concentrated in one person or ‘elite’ group, human rights and freedom suffer. Separating branches of government as check upon one another, with limitations on overall power, the founders sought to break corruptive concentrations of power.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

Our family Mission statement – which hangs in our living room – is: To experience an abundant life, and to help others do the same. Surrounding our Mission statement is our values: God, Family, Authority, Integrity, Health, Our Time, Good Judgement, Service, Hope & Future, and Fun. I believe that an Abundant life begins with a true relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I believe and confess that He died on a cross for all my sin and that God raised Him from the dead freeing me to trust Him for my eternal salvation and fear Him as the Lord of my life. I believe that when I lifted my hand and made a promise in the fear of the Lord to “Uphold & defend our US Constitution…” that I will be held accountable for every choice and action someday when I come before Him. My first ministry before God is my bride Nicole. Second is my 8 children. Third, we have answered the call to Public Leadership & Service based on Matthew 20:26-28.

How would you promote healthcare coverage that is adequate, affordable and accessible for all?

Obamacare should be repealed. Health plan premiums have skyrocketed, with choice virtually non-existent. Competition must be restored, allowing consumers, not government, to dictate the marketplace. Any portion of healthcare premiums paid by individuals should be fully tax deductible. Association plans should be allowed so individuals can leverage better rates. Likewise, those with pre-existing conditions should have high-risk pools to leverage better rates for unique coverage needs. We must recognize access to health care coverage, whether Obamacare or a competitive market, is not access to health care, nor does affordable insurance equate to affordable healthcare. We must be innovative in providing healthcare and simplify the administration of healthcare, reduce barriers to entry and encourage overall competition in the provider market.

What role should government play in boosting the economy?

Rule of Law separates our economy from other countries, reliably respecting property rights – the very core building block making investment desirable. Maintaining the integrity and impartiality of the Rule of Law is the first duty of government regarding the economy. Over-regulation, over-taxation, and laws that unfairly favor one industry or certain individuals over others, violates and degrades the integrity of the Rule of Law so important to our economy. The government at any level should not pick winners and losers. The recent federal tax and regulatory reform have demonstrated that less government in the marketplace yields greater economic activity and success.

What changes should be made to the tax code?

I believe congress has not achieved the full potential of tax reform. First, congress failed to enact true tax simplification – there are still too many rules, too many gimmicks, and too many forms. Second, rate reductions for individuals should have been greater to fully offset eliminating personal exemptions and some itemized deductions. Most importantly, the reductions for individual taxpayers should have been permanent. Third, congress failed to repeal the Johnson Amendment, which unfairly targets churches and religious organizations by effectively stripping those entities of their First Amendment rights. The Johnson Amendment should be repealed immediately.

What is the best way to bring down unemployment?

We need more skilled American labor. Our education policy has focused too greatly on liberal arts and white collar pursuits, to the exclusion, if not derision, of technical skills education. There is no reason that both cannot be pursued to great success. Unfortunately, the shortsighted emphasis of our education policy has led us to a place where we lack enough skilled individuals to construct, operate, design, maintain, or improve any number of modern marvels upon which our businesses and our infrastructure depends. This is not a problem with a short-term solution. It took decades to arrive here, it will take years to turn this around. But, we must get started – and that means, changing our education policy from the K-12 level to the collegiate level to focus on building skills relevant to the real world marketplace, rather than the fanciful imagination of academia.

How would you guarantee Social Security benefits for future generations?

We cannot continue making a funding problem worse. Demographic changes in our nation are such that changes must be made, but benefits must be funded for those currently on or approaching social security age. One option is that workers should have dedicated accounts, for which they can invest the funds contributed within an approved range of investment options. They get a statement each month showing the growth in the account and projected benefit. This keeps Congress from dipping into those funds. Concerns about losses are addressed with a guaranteed minimum benefit, offset by any earnings - which is better than we are now with zero funds. If earnings exceed the minimum benefit, then the beneficiary should enjoy that greater benefit as it is their money in the first place.

What education or experience qualifies you to hold the office for which you seek election?

Servant leadership through proven experience is what qualifies me for election to Congress. I have served as a pastor counseling youth with addictions, and praying with mothers outside Tiller's notorious abortion clinic to save their children. I served as a Green Beret, fighting for our country around the world, I know the weight of leadership and military conflict. And, I have served at home in the legislature tackling policy that affects our state's citizens. I’ve also proven that I win at the ballot box against tough odds. Some have written off this race as a pick-up for Democrats. It’s the same thing I heard when I ran for the Kansas House and defeated an 18-year Democrat incumbent. I know Kansas, I know my 2nd District neighbors, and I know we share the same values. I will work hard every day to lead the fight to defend those values. And, we will win.

Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?

I am running for Congress because I see a lack of true servant leaders in Washington, those focused on getting the job done, rather than pursuing a “career.” True service is not a career, it’s a deployment. You serve, and you return home. I have signed the term limits pledge that I will serve no more than three terms if voters choose to retain me for that time. My goals, if elected, are to work to bring jobs to the 2nd District of Kansas, curb our growing debt, and restore the Rule of Law in the administration of our government.
