Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?
A personhood amendment should be added to the US Constitution and all abortion cases should go before a judge with counsel appointed to represent the pre-born person. Every effort should be made to prevent the abortion.
What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of radical Islamic terrorism?
We must support and exchange information with other governments who face the same threat, and encourage moderate Muslims to help us keep an eye on more extreme elements.
What in the nature of mankind caused America’s Founders to carefully define, separate, and limit powers in the Constitution?
We are all sinners. My 40-year teaching career has been in history and civics. I continue to appreciate the brilliance of America's Founders.
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I took Jesus Christ as both Savior and Lord in 1972, at age 22. I know from scripture that when God pulls someone from obscurity and into leadership, the successes belong to Him, and any failures will be on me. Please pray for me.
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and immigration, which of the following best describes you overall?
No Answer
Please provide publicly available information validating your answer to the previous question.
I believe the Conservative/Liberal vocabulary has lost its validity. I am first-and-foremost Pro-Life, but I believe accomplishing a serious reduction in abortions requires universal health care. To me, Pro-Life also means protection of the environment and climate, clean water and air, and programs to meet the nutritional needs of every child. To protect against assisted suicide requires programs that meet the needs of seniors and the disabled.
How would you promote healthcare coverage that is adequate, affordable and accessible for all?
We can save $360 billion annually in paperwork costs by going to a single-payer program. This also frees up both businesses and employees to hire to meet their needs based just on those needs. Today, someone may be stuck in two 28/hr/wk jobs, and still have no insurance, even while the boss would like to take them on at 40 hours, and can't. No other industrialized nation hobbles its businesses this way.
What role should government play in boosting the economy?
We have allowed our infrastructure to age dangerously. There are things we need done at almost every skill level. My own city has had success hiring the homeless to do small tasks, ending up with several transitioning to private sector employment. Most importantly, we need to be open to creative ideas.
What changes should be made to the tax code?
With the major recent changes, we need to let the dust settle before we start looking at anything new.
What is the best way to bring down unemployment?
We have low unemployment now among those with skills, and a shortage of skilled workers to fill the jobs we have standing empty. California could put 120,000 qualified teachers in the classroom today, if they were available, but young people know they will never pay off their college debts on a teacher salary. Other industries face similar shortages. We became strong and rich as a nation by giving free or affordable education to the masses. We must return to that.
How would you guarantee Social Security benefits for future generations?
First, the Federal government needs to return the money it borrowed from the Social Security fund and spent elsewhere. With longer lives, we may need to carefully raise the age of retirement. I am 68, and still teaching junior high full time, but not everyone has the health to do that. The cap can be raised so that higher incomes pay more into Social Security.
What education or experience qualifies you to hold the office for which you seek election?
I have 60 years of reading history and contemporary issues, and 40 years of teaching and writing about them. I have extensive (over 10 years) overseas living and travel, including South America, Europe, and Asia. My wide range of interests and curiosity (entomology, botany, linguistics, anthropology, history, missions, etc.) and my wide range of friendships give me a breadth of knowledge that few other candidates can match. I am a creative thinker, and not tied to a party-line. I have passable Spanish and a good start on reading Portuguese.
