What in the nature of mankind caused America’s Founders to carefully define, separate, and limit powers in the Constitution?
Our Founders rebelled against the King of England. They made sure that no one person, or branch of government could control everything. They designed a system that requires robust debate and ultimate compromise - two elements missing from the current Congress. I was a congressional staffer when Speaker Jim Wright was in charge of the House and Ronald Reagan was President. I know how Congress is supposed to function under the Constitution and want to return to that model.

Additional comment from candidate:
Congressional inaction on the responsibilities that the Constitution delegated to Congress has crippled our nation and Texas. For example, lack of funding for flood control by US Army Corps of Engineers, failure to fund public rail resulting in the worst traffic in Texas, Zika virus research and prevention, immigration reform, TSA airport security, Veterans Administration reform, biomedical research at the Texas Medical Center, comprehensive energy policy, etc. As a member of Congress I will focus on passing a federal budget rather than perpetual continuing resolutions. As a Democrat and Clinton White House alumnus, I will work to once again balance the federal budget. This is what our Founders delegated to the House and the American people expect its members to spend our time accomplishing.
