QUESTIONNAIRE

RIGHT TO LIFE

Human life begins at conception and deserves legal protection at every stage until natural death.

Strongly Agree

Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds or grants from federal, state, or local governments.

Strongly Disagree

Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?

I stand by the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade and am committed to protecting this as core constitutional right. I also support Planned Parenthood because they provide cancer screening, breast exams, contraceptives, prenatal care, and other vital, sometimes life-saving, services to hundreds of thousands of women. I support the reduction of unintended pregnancies, access to well women’s exams, medical care to prevent and treat sexually transmitted diseases. I have voted against invasive legislation designed to restrict a woman’s right to make her own medical decisions with her physician during a pregnancy.

ECONOMY

It is the government’s responsibility to be sure everyone has a livable income.

Strongly Agree

Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.

Strongly Agree

The state constitution should limit the growth of spending to the rate of population growth plus the rate of inflation.

Did not answer

Congress should pass a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution.

Strongly Agree

What is the best way to bring down unemployment?

Some ways to decrease unemployment would be better funding small businesses. Small businesses are at a disadvantage when larger businesses have an easier access to capital and often times have lower interest rates. Small businesses are growing in becoming a leading provider in jobs. Another way is to provide tax credits to businesses to give them incentive to hire more people.

What role should government play in boosting the economy?

The government is critical in stimulating the country's economy. Through the use of different policies, the government can slow or boost the economy's rate of growth. My economic views align with the Democratic Party. Based on demographic pressures alone, we need more tax dollars. And if we want to improve our infrastructure, push back on global warming, fight poverty and inequality, and improve health and retirement security, we’re definitely going to need more revenue. We could reduce the value of certain tax expenditures, raise high-end tax rates, raise the estate tax, cap deductions on high-income taxpayers, create a financial transactions tax, and even put a tax on carbon emissions.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

Governments should not discriminate against individuals, organizations or small businesses because of their belief that marriage is only a union of one man and one woman.

Strongly Agree

Governments should define marriage as between one man and one woman; no other definition of marriage should be legalized or supported with taxpayer or public funds.

Strongly Disagree

Religious liberty is at risk in the United States and deserves the highest level of protection in the law.

Strongly Agree

HEALTHCARE

It is the government’s responsibility to be sure everyone has health insurance.

Strongly Agree

How would you promote healthcare coverage that is adequate, affordable and accessible for all?

I am a proud member of the Texas House Women’s Health Caucus, and I recently sent the a letter to the Texas Congressional Delegation urging Congress to take immediate action to reinstate federal funding for CHIP. I believe that all Texans should have equal access to high-quality, affordable healthcare, and my actions in the Texas legislature prove this. I remain committed to reforming the Texas healthcare system and I will continue to advocate for legislation that recognizes and promotes the idea that healthcare is a basic human right, which everyone deserves.

NATIONAL SECURITY

I am in favor of construction of a wall and other necessary infrastructure on our border that gives complete control over entering and exiting the United States.

Strongly Disagree

Islamic law (Sharia) should take precedence over national and state laws where there are Islamic majority communities in the U. S.

Did not answer

I support sanctuary cities.

Strongly Agree

The best way to maintain peace is through a strong military.

Strongly Disagree

EDUCATION

Tuition-free public education should be guaranteed through college.

Strongly Agree

VALUES

Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality which permitted our system of limited government.

Did not answer

Any teaching to children on sex education in public schools must include all contraceptive methods, and should not show preference to abstinence.

Strongly Agree

People should be allowed to use public restrooms, showers, and changing rooms based on "gender identity."

Strongly Agree

Parents should be the primary authority in decisions affecting their minor children.

Strongly Agree

What in the nature of mankind caused America’s Founders to carefully define, separate, and limit powers in the Constitution?

The Founding Fathers wanted to create a country that embodied democracy, not one that was ruled by monarchs. Through carefully drafting the Constitution, the Founders made sure not to give one person or branch too much power, which would decrease the chance of the government ruling over the people.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

The church and God are major cornerstones in my life and have shaped me to be the person I am today. My parents raised me up in our local church. Through the teachings and conversations with my Elders, I was able to incorporate God and His teachings into my life's work. I am proud to say I am a Christian.

ABOUT YOU

I support using a party caucus to nominate my party's candidate for Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, and I pledge to vote for my party's nominee.

Yes

I voted in these primaries and general elections:

2010 General Election, 2010 Democratic Primary, 2012 General Election, 2012 Democratic Primary, 2014 General Election, 2014 Democratic Primary, 2016 General Election, 2016 Democratic Primary

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and immigration, which of the following best describes you overall?

Liberal

Please provide publicly available information validating your answer to the previous question.

During the 85th session I worked fervently to change many of the elements of the Texas incarceration system, and authored three bills relating to reforming prison practices. I am also proud to say that I was a Co-Author and staunch supporter of the Sandra Bland Act, and Co-Sponsored the Senate version, which passed in June 2017. Additionally, I voted against SB 4, which was a very discriminatory piece of legislation that specifically targeted minorities and illegally racially profiled Latino immigrants. I understand the necessity of both safe and secure borders, but I am also an advocate for comprehensive immigration legislation, emphasizing a commitment to keeping immigrant families together, giving undocumented workers a chance to "come out of the shadows" and pushing for immigrant integration.

What education or experience qualifies you to hold the office for which you seek election?

During my first session, I was elected by my peers as Vice Chair Of The Harris County Delegation Of State Representatives. I also authored more than 40 pieces of legislation, passed six bills out of the House as the sole author, and co/authored and joint authored other vital pieces of legislation. Prior to serving as State Representative, I have protected and championed the legal rights of individual citizens for twenty years. I am known as effective advocator, negotiator, and a true voice for the voiceless.

Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?

I have a beautiful daughter named Klaire Bijou, so when I’m not on the campaign trail I try to spend as much time as possible with my family. I’ve also been a practicing attorney for over twenty-two years and I am the proud solo practitioner of my own law firm, Law Offices of Shawn Thierry.
