As Sheriff of Virginia Beach, I currently manage the Virginia Beach Office's $73 million annual budget. I also have experience managing and balancing the state budget as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates Finance Committee and the budget of the City of Virginia Beach during my time on Virginia Beach City Council.

It is the responsibility of the Sheriff and the Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office to notify Immigration and Customs Enforcement when a non-U.S. resident is booked into custody.
Employers should be required to use E-verify to confirm the eligibility of their employees to work in the United States.

What do you believe to be the primary role of sheriff?
Protecting & serving the citizens of Virginia Beach, this includes operating the Correctional Center, maintaining discipline & safety at the Virginia Beach courts, serving civil paperwork issued by the courts & serving as a VBPD force multiplier.
What new training programs/policies would you implement in the sheriff's department?
I believe we have the best trained sheriff's office in Virginia; however, we recently sent two deputy sheriff's to the Virginia Beach Police Department Basic Academy and plan to implement a fully certified law enforcement academy for all Virginia Beach deputy sheriffs.

The Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office currently has and is expanding Alternative Sentencing Programs to provide alternatives to incarceration for nonviolent offenders. This includes my new Road to Hope Program.

While school security is under the jurisdiction of the Virginia Beach Police Department and VB Schools, the Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office provides support any time we are needed and I have requested that the Virginia Beach City Council reinstate the D.A.R.E. program to increase law enforcement presence in schools.
