OTHER IMPORTANT ISSUES
Do you support the proposed $850 million bond in its entirety?
No
The $850 million bond is broken into 6 propositions. Which one is most important to you? 1. Streets, bridges & Sidewalks - $446,263,000 2. Drainage & Flood - $138,988,000 3. Parks & Recreation - $187,313,000 4. Library & Cultural - $24,025,000 5. Public Safety Facilities – $34,411,000 6. Neighborhoods – $20 million
1. Streets, bridges & sidewalks (but need to remove the public art)
Which of the above six propositions would you vote against? (list all that apply)
If it was one package I would be against it in total. Philosophically, I am opposed to financing these projects instead of planning and pay as we go. This frequent bond utilization philosophy defies prudence and pragmatism. I believe all the propositions have inclusions that are very important, some of them critical, because we have failed to plan adequately and are having to play catch up with a city credit card. Interwoven in the bond props, are lots of special interest projects that should be private projects. I do not support, for example, the $13M land bridge for animals to traverse in Hardberger Park nor do I support the $42M in modifications planned for Broadway Street Corridor that remove two street lanes. I also do not support the $8.5M that will be set aside for public art. This public art money would be better utilized to help build a Sr. Citizen Center in additional Districts.
Congress should repeal the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).
Strongly Agree
Governments should define marriage as between one man and one woman; no other definition of marriage should be legalized or supported with taxpayer or public funds.
Strongly Agree
Human life begins at conception and deserves legal protection at every stage until natural death.
Strongly Agree
The more people live by Judeo-Christian values, the less government is needed.
Strongly Agree
It is the government’s responsibility to be sure everyone has health care and a livable income.
Strongly Disagree
I am in favor of construction of a wall and other necessary infrastructure on our border that gives complete control over entering and exiting the United States.
Agree
More restrictive gun control laws are needed to protect public safety.
Strongly Disagree
Planned Parenthood should not receive funds from federal, state, or local governments.
Strongly Agree
Individuals should be allowed to use public restrooms, showers, and changing rooms based on their "gender identity."
Strongly Disagree
It is inappropriate for a local government to recognize the terms “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” and issue rules relating to an individual's beliefs about gender and sexuality.
Strongly Agree
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Strongly Disagree
There should be strict enforcement of federal and state laws prohibiting the distribution of obscene pornography, including over the Internet.
Strongly Agree
I support tolling existing highways that have been previously un-tolled.
Strongly Disagree
Government should not discriminate against individuals, organizations, or business owners who affirm marriage as between one man and one woman.
Strongly Agree
Marijuana should be legalized and regulated like tobacco and alcohol.
Strongly Disagree

Prioritize the city budget and focus on core services. Ensure that we have better roads, better schools and safer neighborhoods. Make San Antonio the best place to live, work and raise a family. Encourage a more responsible, transparent city government. Create a more business-friendly environment in our city. Educate our citizens about the irresponsible level of debt our city is accumulating. Defend natural family values.
I own one or more firearms.
Yes
I support the use of Collective Bargaining.
Neutral
I believe the current City Manager should be replaced.
Yes
Did you contribute 10% or more of your gross income to charity last year?
Yes
If you own a business, please describe.
In 2006, I co-founded The Von Dohlen Knuffke Financial Group (TVDKFG) with Michael Knuffke as a prudent resource for Texas Physicians to navigate their financial life consistently with their values.
What in the nature of mankind caused America’s Founders to carefully define, separate, and limit powers in the Constitution?
I believe the law of God was written on the hearts of America's Founding Fathers and was the key resource for them to define, separate and limit powers in the Constitution. I have no doubt that our founder's looked to God for guidance and, though imperfect, believed that this new Constitution was the best opportunity for all to achieve life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I was born, baptized and raised Catholic and believe my faithfulness to God is of upmost importance. My family and I are active parishioners of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church and I have served in numerous roles over the years. My faith is my guide in daily life and I seek to serve on the City Council as a Christian Citizen. That being said, I am open to working with people of all faiths or no faith and believe that we should all strive to serve the common good and for long-term domestic prosperity.

Additional comment from candidate:
As a successful financial adviser and business owner, I am especially suited to serve the residents of District 9 as an advocate for a healthy bottom line. The City of San Antonio is growing at a tremendous rate and we must ensure that every dime we take in serves the people in the most efficient possible way for a better SA. I am a proponent for smart spending focused on core services not luxury items. I believe that, in many cases, the residents of District 9 have not been listened to and I intend to ensure that they have an opportunity to change the overall course of action when it comes to what happens and how it happens in their district and city.
