QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Human life deserves legal protection from conception until natural death.
Agree
... but people also have a right to defend themselves from injury or death. Since pregnancy could potentially cause either, a pregnant person has a right to end the pregnancy. If the removed fetus or baby can survive outside the whom (with current technology) then the offspring has the same natural rights as any other newborn.
What role should the school serve in helping a student with an unwanted or crisis pregnancy?
The student's councilor should inquire as to whether or not the student wishes to have parents involved. If so, an appropriate resolution should be pursued by the family, with no need to involve the school. If not, the councilor should refer the student to an exhaustive list of social service and charitable organizations who help students in such a situation. Districts and other educational organizations should be free to establish schools designed for young mothers. I had the privilege of teaching duel enrolment mathematics classes at Catherine Ferguson Academy in Detroit. Schools modeled after this one would be perfect for young mothers who need to be with their babies during formative months.
ECONOMY
It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has a livable income.
Strongly Disagree
I will qualify this by saying it is the government's responsibility to have policies that don't impair everyone's opportunity to have a livable income. Politicians have done so much damage the economy that people often need assistance to survive, but if a man breaks my legs and offers me a crutch, I may use it, but it would be better if he hadn't broken my legs.
What is your position on government funding of public education from Pre-K through college?
The government doesn't fund anything. Taxpayers and people with savings fund the programs politicians create. Taxes are extorted from people, and the Federal Reserve system debases the currency, so that the value of savings is diminished. This inflation tax not only hurts savers, but also hurts working people who must borrow and sink into debt when wage increases fall behind price increases. The interest further hurts working people. All funding should be voluntary, but the BOE can't fix this.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
The Ten Commandments should not be displayed in public school buildings or court houses.
Disagree
Censorship is the child of fear, the father of ignorance, and the weapon of tyrants. Critical thinking skills develop best in an environment where no ideas are withheld from students, and they may openly express their beliefs, whether it be the 10 commandments, Koran, Ayn Rand books, Stephen Hawking's work, grimoire, Mahabharata, Tao Te Ching or Principia Discordia. Since the Constitution prohibits the establishment of a state religion, no taxpayer funded organization can favor one over others.
At school, students should be able to speak freely and civilly about matters of conscience and faith, including Christianity.
Strongly Agree
Open discourse for sure, so long as this does not involve speaking out of turn or deliberately disrupting the academic environment. That would interfere with the right of other students to learn. I had the privilege of attending the Detroit Waldorf School from second through eighth grade. There we learned about a variety of religious and cultural traditions. We even learned several creation narratives. Individuals shouldn't have to hide who they are. Let their diversity shine!
Teachers should be required to instruct students on mandated curriculum even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.
Disagree
"Mandated" implies "required." So I think a better way to say this is that specific curriculum should not be mandated on all teachers. I support institutional autonomy, so an institution may have a particular method or curriculum, and teaching it may be a condition of employment. Teachers aren't required to work there so they aren't required to teach it. Clearly, liberating education from government control and funding is needed to ensure more diverse options, but that would exceed BOE authority
NATIONAL SECURITY
Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?
Yes, but this is outside the authority of the Board of Education. Israel is one of many countries that the USA is too entangled with militarily. I support a non-interventionist foreign policy that aims to establish friendly relations with all nations, & entangling alliances with none. We are a nation of immigrants. Many escaped war in their homelands. We shouldn't rob people to fund the slaughter of individuals by governments. If individuals wish to voluntarily do so, that's their prerogative.
The best way to maintain peace is through a strong military.
Neutral
The BOE has no control of the military. A strong military plays an important roll, but simply having one won't assure peace. Historically the worse aggressors had strong militaries. They weren't maintaining peace, they were waging war. In addition to being prepared and technologically able to repel aggressors, we must avoid creating enemies and provoking other powerful nations. Trade and voluntary cultural exchanges create a climate that fosters peace. Freedom of travel is key.
EDUCATION
I support eliminating the U.S. Department of Education and giving control back to states and communities.
Strongly Agree
This is not consistent with the Constitutionally enumerated powers of Federal government. Having Federal involvement in state and local educational policies violates the spirit of the Tenth Amendment, and possibly the letter of it too.
The state should fund education by allowing dollars to follow the child instead of the bureaucracy, through a program which allows parents the freedom to choose their child's school – public, private, or homeschool.
Neutral
The dollars should follow the student, but the state funds nothing. At the state-level taxpayers fund education. Rather than taking money from parents, then giving it back, parents and guardians should receive a tax break if they don't use the public system. This approach doesn't create the same constitutional issues that would arise if the state sent money to religious schools. While the BOE doesn't have the direct authority to make this happen, it could advise the legislature to do so.
Which type of written parental consent should be obtained before students are taught courses such as Comprehensive Sex Education (CSE)? (A) Opt-In. (B) Opt-Out. (C) None.
I support institutional autonomy. Guardians should get information on school policies upon request.
Abortion and gender-affirming providers, including Planned Parenthood, should be a resource for instruction or services in the school.
Disagree
In general public schools aren't hospitals and I don't think money earmarked for education should be diverted to medical treatment. I support institutional autonomy. Guardians should get information on school policies upon request. If high school councilors wish to provide information for students needing special services outside of schools, they should be free to share that information.
Please list in order the following priorities in relation to the role of a K-12 public school (omitting any that do not apply): American History, Art & Music, Civics, Critical Race Theory, Foreign Language, Gender Identity, Information Technology, Language Arts, Mathematics, Personal Finances, Physical Fitness, Political Activism, Science, Sexuality, Social Emotional Learning, Vocational Learning
There is no single right order here. Ideally families should be able to choose from a diverse collection of schools in order to find one that will be the best fit. This is especially true at the secondary level when students may wish to prepare for specific careers. At the elementary level there are common skills that are so fundamental that one may assume all students would learn them. This relates to topics like logic, math, science, literacy, PE, art & music, and basic history.
VALUES
Children have the right to be protected from sexual grooming including drag shows, explicit materials in schools and libraries, and other public venues.
Choose not to answer
I will answer the 2 questions: 1. I strongly agree that children should be protected from sexual predators. If a school employee believes the child is at risk of being a victim, that person should report the matter to the appropriate authorities immediately. 2. I strongly disagree with the assertion that drag shows are a form of sexual grooming & I've already stated my strong opposition to censorship earlier in this survey. I refer the reader to my responses to the religious liberty questions.
Marriage between one man and one woman and the families they form are the foundation of civilization and are fundamental to the well-being and prosperity of society.
Disagree
Families are fundamental to civilization, but this one-size-fits-all approach is not. Historically a variety of different family structures existed in different cultures and subcultures. For example, the Biblical civilizations of the ancient Middle-East frequently had polygynous family structures as do some modern societies. Polyandry was a common practice in Nepal and the Mosuo ethnic group in Yunnan China had walking marriages. Today many families are headed by monogamous same-sex couples.
No healthcare diagnosis or treatment, whether mental, reproductive, or otherwise, should be given to a child without first receiving written consent from the parent.
Disagree
Under normal circumstance I would agree that parental consent should be a prerequisite to medical treatment, but adhering to this statement, without exception, could have dire circumstances or lead to blatantly absurd outcomes: 1. This would mean no orphaned children could get medical attention of any kind prior to adoption. 2. In an emergency, when a parent can't be reached, the child could die while waiting for written consent. 3. Enabling violent and predatory behavior of abusive parents.
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
Existence exists. God being the ultimate reality must exist as being existence itself. This is not so much a matter of belief as of knowledge. Individuals are the means by which the Universe becomes conscious of itself. No single individual can know the totality of reality, but rather they each are a part of the whole. As unique and different expressions of God, one should respect the right of every individual to express oneself and be free as long as each does likewise. Love is most fully experienced when one sees the spark of consciousness in another and recognizes it as divine. To act in a sadistic manner or to violate the autonomy of another is to be blind to the light in another and ignorant of the fact that we are all one in spirit.
ELECTIONS AND VOTING
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Neutral
People need to be able to verify their identity in one manner or another, but photo ID may not be the only way. Currently absentee voters verify their identities with signatures, and having the ballot arrive at their legal residences. It makes no difference if the absentee voter is holding a picture ID while filling out the ballot. People voting in person should show photo ID to receive a ballot though. In future elections there may be ways to make photo ID a practical requirement.
EQUALITY
I support Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).
Neutral
It depends on how one goes about it. I support diverse options. The greatest diversity of options occurs in a free market where families can chose the schools that are the best fit for students. I don't support forcing diversity into a context for its own sake. "Equity" is frequently misused to mean "fairness;" rather than some form of secured value in an investment. Being fair, should not be confused with promising equal outcomes. As I run out of space I'll just say 3-word bromides mean little
Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.
Neutral
In general institutions and athletic organizations should be free to set their own policies so long as they are not accepting taxpayer funds. Since no sexual or gender demographic is tax-exempt, and because all persons in the US are subject to equal protection under the law (14th Amendment), each are entitled to equal access. The above appears to be a "separate but equal" statement. Arguably the notion of men competing in "women's sports" goes away if public schools end segregated sports.
ABOUT YOU
I voted in these primaries and general elections:
2014 General Election 2016 General Election 2018 General Election 2020 General Election 2022 General Election
I vote in primaries but my choice of which one depends on who's running in each one and which primary offers the best chance to get a lesser evil into the general election.
Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.
No.
Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.
No.
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Choose not to answer
I AM ANSWERING BUT NONE OF YOUR CHOICES FIT. These choices are based on an obsolete 1-dimensional left right spectrum. I am extremely libertarian [Not Left or Right but Up]. Please refer to the Nolan Chart: https://polquiz.com/test/ or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nolan_Chart I am 100% for personal and economic freedom.
2ND AMENDMENT
Faculty who are licensed to carry and have had ongoing training should be allowed to carry guns at school in order to respond to an active shooter situation.
Strongly Agree
... except private schools who wish to have a "no gun policy." There should be a warning posted at such places that anyone who enters won't be under the protection of law-abiding gun owners. Schools should be dropped from the excluded spaces for CPL holders. Mass shooters prefer schools because they are soft targets.
OTHER IMPORTANT ISSUES
Under what circumstances (if any) should schools be allowed to require vaccinations?
If they don't accept any taxpayer funds they should be able to set their own policies.
