I led the production and publication of the Republican Study Committee's 2020 federal budget proposal "Preserving American Freedom" (linked at https://rsc-johnson.house.gov/policy-solutions/preserving-american-freedom), which details ideas to make Social Security solvent. Without reform, it will be depleted by 2035, or sooner. Our plan implements the Social Security Reform Act to achieve long-term sustainable solvency; phases in an increase of the eligibility age to 70 and indexes life expectancy to keep up with increases in longevity; updates to a more accurate system for calculating cost-of-living adjustments for those most in need; modernizes the benefit formula for new retirees; provides additional support for the most vulnerable; reduces barriers to staying active in retirement; and prohibits overpayment debt discharge.

I spent two decades defending religious freedom in our courts, largely because atheist groups were pushing their false "separation" narrative. The Declaration openly states that our rights derive from God and we operate “with a firm reliance upon the protection of Divine Providence.” Later, the Founders very deliberately listed religious liberty (the free exercise of religion) as the first freedom protected in the Constitution's Bill of Rights because they wanted everyone to freely live out their faith--as that would ensure a robust presence of moral virtue in the public square and the free marketplace of ideas. Because they knew that a free society and a healthy republic depend upon religious and moral virtue, they never wanted to separate God from government. They wanted to protect the church from an encroaching state, not the other way around.

Congress ought to use it as a blueprint to increase affordability, quality, and choice in the U.S. health care system.

We must take a strong stand against radical Islamic terrorism, and nations like Iran, which continues in its pursuit of nuclear weapons, seeks Israel’s destruction, and stands as the world’s most prolific sponsor of terrorism. More broadly, Salafi-jihadist groups like ISIS and al-Qaeda, which have grown in a number of areas, remain a top security concern. These growing threats require the Trump Administration and conservatives in Congress to continue our tough stances and adopt new policies focused on advancing America’s interests at home and abroad.

I believe the Bible is the Word of God and the standard by which we are to measure and order our lives. I believe Jesus is the one and only Son of God, our Savior and Lord, and that the free gift of eternal salvation was made available to all by His blood atonement for our sins. As a Southern Baptist, I subscribe to the principles articulated in The Baptist Faith and Message 2000. I believe that the core principles of American conservatism (individual liberty, limited government, the rule of law, peace through strength, fiscal responsibility, free markets, human dignity and traditional family values) find their origin and validity in the Bible.

Some commonsense limitations are necessary to protect public safety--such as the restrictions on the possession of firearms by convicted felons and the mentally ill--but our Second Amendment right must otherwise be vigorously protected against liberal politicians who seek to curtail it.

I will continue to advance our core conservative principles, primarily in the areas of jurisdiction of my committee assignments (Judiciary, Natural Resources, and hopefully in the next Congress, House Armed Services). Later this month, I will be publishing a 400+ page compilation of our specific policy proposals developed over the past two years in the Republican Study Committee. It will be my priority to advance those ideas and legislation through the next Congress with the help of RSC's 149 members in the House.

Because each of us is made in His image, every single person has an estimable dignity and value which is wholly unrelated to the color of our skin, what neighborhood we live in, or how well we did in school. Any fool who contends he has a natural right of supremacy over his neighbors violates not only the foundational creed of America, but the greatest commandments of our Heavenly Father.
