What in the nature of mankind caused America’s Founders to carefully define, separate, and limit powers in the Constitution?
It is in mankind's nature to be self-interested. To protect individuals from the Tyranny of the majority, we need the Bill of Rights. Furthermore, the separate three branches protects us from self-interested tyrants.
What is the proper use of legislative history in interpreting statutory law?
Using legislative history to interpret the law is a slippery slope and could lead to a judge to legislating from the bench. Judges should NOT legislate from the bench. I agree with Scalia that Judges should use the fairest meaning of the actual text of the statute to interpret the law. If the legislature failed to include a provision or there is a gap in the law, then the legislature should fix the law, not the Court. The Court should not look at extrinsic documents to "find" new meaning in a law that has been democratically passed.

The Preamble: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I believe Jesus is the Son of God, that he came to earth as a man and lived a perfect life. I believe that he died on the cross for our sins, meaning that he took the punishment we deserved and died for the sins of all mankind. I believe that Jesus rose again three days later and is alive and promises us that if we place our faith and belief in him, that he will also raise us from the dead one day and we can spend eternity with God. His salvation is a free gift to us, and cannot be obtained by works. Jesus is the only way to salvation and God. (John 14:6) I was raised by my mom in a Southern Baptist Church and came to know Christ at an early age. I was baptized at 7. My wife and I are active in our church, Crossroads Community Church, in Austin.

My wife and I have been involved in the pro-life movement and have given money to many different pro-life groups. Currently, my wife serves on the Board of Austin Life Care Pregnancy Resource Center, and the Advisory Board for Texas Center for Defense of Life. I have only ever voted in the Republican Primary. I was a delegate to the Republican State Convention: 2000, 2004, 2008*, 2010*, 2014. (*In 2008 or 2010 I was an alternate instead of delegate, but was seated at convention) I've served as a Delegate from Williamson, Harris and Travis County. I've campaigned extensively for multiple Republican candidates in the past 20 years.
