QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?
Because of the "heartbeat bill" which I co-authored in 2021, all abortion in Texas is now outlawed once a heartbeat can be detected. Further, we passed a "trigger" law to completely ban abortion in Texas in the event the U.S. Supreme Court strikes down Roe vs. Wade. I'm very proud of the strides we've taken in recent years to end all abortion in Texas.
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).
Strongly Agree
I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.
Strongly Disagree
ECONOMY
What changes, if any, should be made to the tax code?
As a small business owner, I know that small businesses are the heart of our economy. That's why I've always supported policies, and would support changes to the tax code, that reduce burdensome regulations and tax liabilities that stifle job creation.
What government spending would you reduce in order to balance the budget?
I am pleased to report that in my three terms as state representative, we have balanced every state budget by cutting waste and inefficiency, while prioritizing the things that government exists to provide, such as public education, law enforcement, and border security. We've also cut property taxes by $5 billion.
Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.
Strongly Disagree
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.
Strongly Disagree
Under what circumstances can government close churches?
The government should never be allowed to close churches, and now because of HB525, which we passed during the last legislative session, Texans can rest assured that it will never happen again. This legislation declared churches as "essential" which protects the right to worship and ensures that no declared state of emergency can ever again close the doors to our houses of worship.
HEALTHCARE
What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D)Tax-payer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be de-funded.
C
Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?
I am a strong advocate for personal responsibility and I co-authored legislation prohibiting a vaccine mandate from being imposed on Texas businesses. I also joined in an amicus brief to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit Court objecting to the Biden Administration’s overreach in this area.
NATIONAL SECURITY
What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of Islamic terrorism?
In my capacity as a state representative, the best thing I can do to help eradicate the threat of Islamic terrorism is to secure our border with Mexico. As a state budget writer, I successfully fought to increase border security funding by $2.8 billion. Joe Biden and the Democrats have failed us at the border, but my colleagues and I are standing in the gap with new troopers, advanced technology, and a border wall to cut off the flow of smugglers, traffickers, and dangerous criminals crossing into Texas.
I support the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement to pressure Israel to withdraw from occupied territories, remove the separation barrier in the West Bank, allow full equality for Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel, and promote the rights of Palestinian refugees.
Strongly Disagree
IMMIGRATION
The U.S. should do more to physically secure the southern border.
Strongly Agree
Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?
We are a nation of immigrants, and as such we should welcome those who are willing to assimilate into our culture, and who will follow our laws and the Constitution. Legal immigration has been a strength of the United States since our founding, but we must ensure that those who seek to enter our country do so through the proper channels, not by illegally crossing. That's why one of my top priorities in the state house is securing our southern border and finish building the border wall that the federal government failed to complete.
VALUES
Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality which is necessary for our system of limited government.
Strongly Agree
I support adding gender identity as a specially protected class in non-discrimination laws.
Strongly Disagree
I agree with Critical Race Theory (CRT) which asserts that the institutions in the United States are fundamentally racist.
Strongly Disagree
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I am a Christian conservative, an active member of Denton Bible Church, and I co-founded our area's Young Life student ministry along with my wife, Lori. I believe that we have a moral obligation to leave our state and nation in a better place than we found it for the sake of our children and generations to come. Our time on earth is short, and the legacy we leave behind should only be of the highest caliber.
ELECTIONS AND VOTING
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Strongly Disagree
What laws would you propose to change present voting practices?
In the last legislative special session, I was proud to help pass the Election Integrity Protection Act which creates uniform statewide standards for the conduct of our elections, provides transparency measures, increases the security of mail-in ballots, and cracks down on fraud. Essentially it makes voting easier and makes cheating harder. I believe this new law will go a long way ensuring the integrity of our elections and giving the public confidence in the result.
EQUALITY
Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?
Racism is not a threat to domestic security, but those on the left try to use it as a way to divide Americans - and that is a very real public safety threat.
Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.
Strongly Disagree
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT
Which comes closest to your view? A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost.
A
I support the use of hydraulic fracking to extract oil and natural gas resources.
Strongly Agree
ABOUT YOU
What do you think is the general purpose of government?
At its most basic level, the purpose of government is to protect the freedom and liberty of the individual.
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Very Conservative
Please provide publicly available information, including interviews and media reports, validating your answer to the previous question (other than your website).
The best publicly available information to validate my conservative credentials is my voting record and legislative accomplishments in the Texas House. I'm also endorsed by the N.R.A., The Texas Alliance for Life, the Texas Farm Bureau, The Texas Small Business Association, and many others for my commitment to limited government.
Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized in either civil or criminal court for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.
No
What else would you like voters to know about you, including your legislative priorities?
I believe we are in a battle for the soul of our nation and its promise as a beacon of freedom and liberty. Joe Biden and the Democrats in Washington have declared war on our most precious freedoms with mandates and regulations that undermine the very nature of our Constitution and Bill of Rights. For generations, Texas has led the nation in freedom, opportunity, and prosperity. My life is a testimony to that and my mission at the Texas Capitol is to keep that legacy alive. In 1983, I arrived in Denton County with little more than the clothes that I owned and a small, hand-me-down television set. Since then, my wife, Lori, and I built a veterinarian practice from the ground-up to serve more than 9,000 of our neighbors and raised three children. As parents, we were concerned for our children and others in the community, so we co-founded the Young Life student ministry in Denton County to give them a foundation of faith, courage, and integrity to build on as they grew up. I also served 15 years as an elected member of the Sanger ISD School Board, taking an active role in our local schools to support classroom teachers and a wholesome learning environment. In 2016, I ran for State Representative with the same sense of calling that inspired me to take a leading role in my community. I am passionate about making sure our children and future generations have the same opportunity I did to work hard, build a business, and raise a family in a safe community. I am immensely proud of our conservative victories to invest billions in Texas border security, pass major school finance reform, advance major protections for the Second Amendment, enact the nation’s strongest pro-life laws, and develop fiscally responsible budgets while cutting $5 billion in property taxes. I am running for re-election because our work isn’t complete and ask for your support to keep up the fight.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY
Police officers should be personally immune from prosecution for conduct consistent with departmental policy (qualified immunity) while on duty.
Strongly Agree
I support redirecting funds from police departments to mental health and community programs.
Strongly Disagree
2ND AMENDMENT
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
None.
Victims of gun violence should be able to sue firearms dealers and manufacturers.
