RIGHT TO LIFE

Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?

I’m pro-life, and my commitment to the sanctity of life is deeply personal. Because of a courageous decision by her birth mother, my wife Angela was placed for adoption. Because her birth mother chose life, I met the woman of my dreams and have been blessed with a wonderful life with Angela and our family. Protecting the lives of unborn children has been one of my major priorities throughout my public service. As Attorney General, I am working to promote a culture of life in Texas, and ensure that laws passed by the legislature to protect the lives of unborn children are fully implemented and legally protected. The Texas Attorney General's Office has been a leader in protecting life. Recently, the Texas Legislature passed the Heartbeat Bill to protect the unborn based on the detection of a heartbeat. I was proud to defend this legislation before the Supreme Court and will continue to pursue enforcing all laws passed by the Legislature and signed by Governor Abbott.

Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).

Strongly Agree

I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.

Strongly Disagree

ECONOMY

What changes, if any, should be made to the tax code?

Throughout my career in public service, I have been a strong supporter of lowering taxes to benefit our entire economy. While I may not have a major role in writing our tax code, the Attorney General plays a critical role in protecting taxpayers through investigating waste, fraud, and abuse, by reviewing and approving local bond packages, and through reviewing large state contracts.

What government spending would you reduce in order to balance the budget?

When I was serving in the Texas House and Senate, I was always looking to help balance the budgets and cut wasteful spending. As Attorney General, I am reviewing contracts and bond proposals to ensure our tax money is spent wisely. In reviewing waste, fraud, and abuse, Texas will aggressively investigate and prosecute Medicaid fraud to ensure your tax dollars are not wasted.

Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.

Strongly Disagree

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.

Strongly Disagree

Under what circumstances can government close churches?

The First Amendment to the United States Constitution and Article I of the Texas Constitution protect the right of Texans to freely exercise their religion. In addition, the Texas Religious Freedom Restoration Act provides even stronger protections to faith communities, and government must ensure that it complies with RFRA when it acts. In the past, the Government has had a compelling interest for implementing the rules to help spread contagion, but it must not infringe on Texans' religious liberty. The Office of the Attorney General is not only able to fight back, but I believe it has a moral obligation to defend the rights of citizens who choose to peacefully observe their faith traditions.

HEALTHCARE

What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D)Tax-payer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be de-funded.

C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary.

Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?

My record as Attorney General on COVID vaccinations has been crystal clear: I've fought against them every chance I've been given. When Biden attempted to put a mandate in place through CMS, I secured a preliminary injunction for the State of Texas, stopping the Biden Administration from imposing vaccine mandates on the employees of Medicaid and Medicare providers and suppliers. When President Biden committed to requiring all private employers in America with 100 or more employers to force their employees to get vaccinated or submit to a weekly testing regime, I lead multi-state litigation arguing the actions by the Biden administration were unconstitutional. Winning the OSHA case before the Supreme Court was a major step in the right direction and is one of many cases totaling over 90% that the Attorney General's Office has won against the Biden administration.

NATIONAL SECURITY

What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of Islamic terrorism?

The United States must be aggressive in combatting the threat of radical Islamic terrorism. I believe the Biden administration's disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan has weakened our nation, and left us vulnerable to future attacks. President Biden's failure to secure our border also represents a significant threat to our national security as criminals and potential terrorists have been given the green light to cross into our country. While my role does not allow me to engage on foreign policy often, I can play a role in holding the federal government accountable for their failure to enforce our immigration laws and secure our border – which will help keep us safe from a multitude of threats.

I support the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement to pressure Israel to withdraw from occupied territories, remove the separation barrier in the West Bank, allow full equality for Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel, and promote the rights of Palestinian refugees.

Strongly Disagree

IMMIGRATION

The U.S. should do more to physically secure the southern border.

Strongly Agree

Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?

America is a nation with a proud history of immigration. Immigration should be done legally and based on merit.

VALUES

Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality which is necessary for our system of limited government.

Strongly Agree

I support adding gender identity as a specially protected class in non-discrimination laws.

Strongly Disagree

I agree with Critical Race Theory (CRT) which asserts that the institutions in the United States are fundamentally racist.

Strongly Disagree

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

My Christian faith and my conservative values have been central to how I’ve lived my entire life – they’ve guided my career, led me to public service, and they’ve made me who I am today as a husband and father. I would not be who I am today without the guidance of our Lord, Jesus Christ, and I seek to honor him every single day. It’s through him that all things are possible. The Constitution must be interpreted in the manner in which our Founding Fathers intended and not based on the whims of individuals in power. As Attorney General, not only do I pledge to defend the Constitution which I am sworn to protect, but I also promise to have the courage to advance the principles it stands for.

ELECTIONS AND VOTING

People should be able to vote without photo identification.

Strongly Disagree

What laws would you propose to change present voting practices?

My job as Attorney General is not to propose laws but to protect the rule of law and the constitution. No Attorney General in the country has led on election integrity as much as I have. My record includes standing up for election integrity in many forms following the 2020 election and forming the 2021 Texas Election Integrity Unit, which was a concentrated effort to devote agency lawyers, investigators, support staff, and resources to ensuring the 2021 local elections were conducted fairly and without fraud.

EQUALITY

Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?

No, but dangerous ideologies that seek to divide us may be a threat. Critical race theory promotes misinformation, undermines civic unity, and fosters hateful racism. Our nation is founded on the idea that all men are created equal. We have fought for and secured this belief over the course of our history and that unity must continue, not be forced back into the single, distorted lens of race. I am proud to stand against any projects that assign character traits, values, privileges, fault, or status to an individual based on their race are inherently flawed and go against our founding principles of equality.

Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.

Strongly Disagree

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Which comes closest to your view? A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost.

A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy.

I support the use of hydraulic fracking to extract oil and natural gas resources.

Strongly Agree

ABOUT YOU

What do you think is the general purpose of government?

I believe government should be limited to its core functions and then perform those core functions well. At it’s most basic levels, I believe in keeping the heavy hand of government at bay. I will defend the free market economic model that has made Texas the economic envy of the country and not succumb to pressure from the federal government or other elected officials that seek to increase government regulations. Good governments must allow the spirit of our nation to thrive, and that means allowing Americans the freedoms necessary to achieve and live their dreams.

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?

Very Conservative

Please provide publicly available information, including interviews and media reports, validating your answer to the previous question (other than your website).

I am proud to be endorsed by President Donald J. Trump, who in his endorsement called me a patriot for the America First Agenda. While serving in the state legislature I was named as a “Courageous Conservative” by the Texas Conservative Coalition multiple times and I'm a previous winner of multiple "Most Conservative Member" awards from groups like Young Conservatives of Texas and Heritage Alliance. I was also named a “Pro-Life All Star” by Texas Right to Life.

Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized in either civil or criminal court for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.

I have been the target of a politically motivated effort to ruin my career as a public servant. The accusations that have been leveled against me are a clear political hit-job in the media, perhaps even inappropriately influencing the grand jury. I stand ready to clear my name against these egregious accusations in court. People always target those who are fighting the hardest against powerful establishment forces, but I will not back down.

What else would you like voters to know about you, including your legislative priorities?

I have always been keenly aware of what it means to serve. I was born into a military family, with my father serving in the Air Force. I’ve served the great people of the Lone Star State since 2002 when I was first elected to the State House. I have a great connection to the people of this state and I know what matters to them. It’s their commitment to our shared conservative values that guides me and helps me serve their interests best. I am deeply devoted to America’s founding values and the conservative values Texans hold dear. I have a deep passion and respect for our U.S. Constitution that I’ve shown through my previous service in the Texas House, Senate, and now as Attorney General. My uncompromising devotion to America’s founding values has served me well in this office. I always tell folks that this office is the frontline in the battle against the Biden administration’s attempts to squash our freedoms, and I am honored to fight for Texans and the fundamental freedoms they hold dear. I also fight to ensure our laws are respected and seek to hold those who violate them accountable.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY

Police officers should be personally immune from prosecution for conduct consistent with departmental policy (qualified immunity) while on duty.

Strongly Agree

I support redirecting funds from police departments to mental health and community programs.

Strongly Disagree

2ND AMENDMENT

What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?

As Attorney General, I am fighting to protect our Second Amendment rights at every turn.I believe that no government entity may set local policies that infringe upon our right to personally keep and bear arms. I don’t think it makes any sense to create laws for law-abiding citizens. There’s a reason that the Second Amendment exists. It was there because the founders feared government and they wanted to make sure that the people could defend themselves if they ever had to against their own government. That’s the reality and that’s why it was put there. I don’t think it makes any sense to create laws for law-abiding citizens.

Victims of gun violence should be able to sue firearms dealers and manufacturers.
