Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?

I believe abortions should be allowed only in the rarest of instances in which the mother's life is in jeopardy by continuing with the pregnancy.

What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of radical Islamic terrorism?

Freedom of religion is one of the most basic human rights and yet, we know that it is regularly denied to millions of people around the globe. The International Religious Freedom (IRF) Caucus, which I co-Chair, does important work to educate our country’s leaders about the oppression that occurs. We recently hosted a forum to discuss the findings of a recent study by Hardwired regarding the powerful impact of rights-based education. Educational approaches like this offered in societies that are unaware of their freedoms provide significant opportunity to shape the minds of future generations. I support the promotion of these initiatives in order to decrease the threat of radical Islamic terrorism around the globe.

What in the nature of mankind caused America’s Founders to carefully define, separate, and limit powers in the Constitution?

The Founding Fathers had a keen understanding that government should exist to serve its people and of the fact that absolute power corrupts absolutely. Therefore, they carefully constructed a governing compact with a division of power that provided a system of checks and balances with the goal of ensuring its citzenry would enjoy the inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness without oppression from a tyrannical regime.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I am a devout member of the Greek Orthodox faith. God is the source of faith in the Orthodox Church. Orthodoxy believes that God has revealed Himself to us, most especially in the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom we know as the Son of God. This Revelation of God, His love, and His purpose, is constantly made manifest and contemporary in the life of the Church by the power of the Holy Spirit. My core values are faith, family and public service. With the Golden Rule guiding my daily life, I endeavor to treat others as I would like to be treated.

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and immigration, which of the following best describes you overall?

Very Conservative

How would you promote healthcare coverage that is adequate, affordable and accessible for all?

We have to improve access to high quality health care at an affordable price, and the Affordable Care Act did not accomplish this goal, which is why I voted to repeal and replace it. I support protections for pre-existing conditions, required coverage for: preventative care, mental health/substance abuse treatment and allowing kids to stay on parents’ plans until 26. We must focus on strategies to reduce the cost of healthcare: increased prevention, better care coordination, improved integration of electronic records and a continued shift from the fee for service model, for example. We should also expand: Association Health Plans, Health Savings Accounts, community health centers and research into diseases, like Alzheimer’s which are costly to treat. There are no simple solutions to this complex problem, but these are a step in the right direction as we fix our fragmented system.

What role should government play in boosting the economy?

The government's job is to facilitate an environment in which small businesses, who employ the majority of Americans can thrive. The economy is strong due to the policies we've enacted such as tax reform and the elimination of duplicative regulation: 1.3 million jobs added, Wages-highest since 2009, income inequality decreasing 3 years in a row, Unemployment rate-3.9%, 2nd Quarter GDP growth -4.2%. The average person in my district will see a $1,067 tax cut, which I want to make permanent. I’ve been working to address skills gap in the workforce by strengthening technical education/apprenticeship programs since 2006. Not all kids need/want to go to college but they need skills required for future success. The government should continue realigning our education system to gives this opportunity.

What changes should be made to the tax code?

I support making the recently enacted individual tax cuts permanent. In general, I continue to seek opportunities where we can lower the tax burden for all Americans while funding our nation's highest priorities.

What is the best way to bring down unemployment?

The best way to bring down unemployment is through creating an environment that fosters competition. When businesses are free to innovate due to less regulation and a lower tax burden, we see that they reinvest and expand operations, which creates jobs. As we have seen since tax reform, unemployment is close to historic lows. There are more jobs available than people looking for them even though have re-entered the job market. The lowest-income workers are benefiting the most, as wage growth for lower wage workers' wage growth has outpaced high-income earners, causing income inequality to decrease for the past three years.

How would you guarantee Social Security benefits for future generations?

We must ensure the long-term solvency of Social Security, as it is a vital social safety net for seniors and the disabled. I will continue to fight to preserve it. I am working on legislation that would create a bi-partisan Commission to generate potential solutions to its fiscal challenges. We have to remove the politics from the equation, just as was done in the early 80s. We must address the projected shortfall without hurting those who rely upon the program. For example, one idea is lifting the income cap upon which social security deductions are applied. I am certainly open to reviewing that as one potential solution, and believe the bi-partisan Commission established through my legislation should explore how much funding such a change would generate, and how the revenue would impact the solvency of the program. I believe that if we get the brightest minds and actuarial experts working together in a non-partisan, collaborative manner, we will develop creative solutions.

What education or experience qualifies you to hold the office for which you seek election?

I have eight years of legislative experience at the state level, and have been working diligently for the past 12 years to serve as a representative voice of the people of this district in Congress. I am proud of what I have been able to achieve, and remain committed to building upon that success. Just this current Congress, I have had 9 bills signed into law and 9 more pass the House in the 115th Congress alone. These are important measures that will have a tangible impact on the lives of my constituents and millions of Americans. I am also proud of my work to protect Veterans, my highest priority in Congress. My values are in line with the those of my constituency and I would be honored to be entrusted with the privilege of continuing to serve them.

Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?

I believe my constituents expect their leaders to work together and put the needs of their country above petty partisanship. I was recently identified as the most bi-partisan Member of Congress, from either party, in the Tampa Bay delegation. I reach across the aisle regularly to build consensus. The Lower Drug Costs through Competition Act, Reauthorization of Community Health Centers, Childrens' Health Insurance Program (CHIP) Buy-In provision and the Congenital Heart Futures Reauthorization Act are all examples of my recent bi-partisan record. I have solid relationships with my colleagues. Those relationships, among members of both parties, are critical in the facilitation of effective governing. Both parties have good ideas, and the best legislation results from us working together to do what is good for all Americans.
