15. What in the nature of mankind caused America’s Founders to carefully define, separate, and limit powers within the Constitution?
Our founding fathers saw the dangers of unbridled government power in England and other European monarchies and how it resulted in Tyranny. They wisely recognized that in order to protect individual liberties and prevent government overreach, a new system of government would be necessary. Sadly, President Obama has ignored many of these checks and balances laid out in the Constitution and has circumvented Congress to force his agenda.
16. Briefly list three (3) political or legislative issues of most concern to you, and explain why each is important to you.
1. In Congress, I am the author of the Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act. This legislation would prohibit funding of Planned Parenthood and similar organizations that receive federal dollars while participating in the barbaric practice of abortion. Until we can spare all unborn children from the horrors of abortion, Congress must stop American taxpayers from footing the bill for this heinous abuse of innocent life. 2. I am a cosponsor of a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution. When I served in the Tennessee General Assembly, we were required to balance our budget each year. I believe that Congress should be required to do the same. 3. I am a cosponsor of the American Health Care Reform Act- legislation offering a conservative, patient-centered alternative to the burdensome mandates of Obamacare. This legislation would fully repeal the President's healthcare law and replace it market-based reforms to lower costs and improve access to care.
17. Should abortion be allowed under extenuating circumstances? If so, what circumstances?
I do not believe that abortion should be permitted under any circumstances.
18. Based on the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, please arrange the following entities, starting with the highest source of authority, and continue the list in descending order of authority, skipping any that do not apply: Academia, Congress, Constitution, God, Industry, Media, Professional Sports, Supreme Court, Voters.
I believe that God is the highest source of all authority. Second to that is the United States Constitution. Third is the voters. As our Declaration of Independence explains, our government's power rests "on the consent of the governed."
19. Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
My Christian faith informs who I am. It is foundational to every decision I make, both in Congress and in my private life. Through prayer and reading of God's word, I find direction and guidance in my daily decisions. A scripture that I have drawn particular encouragement from in Congress is Galatians 6:9 which reads, "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."
