OTHER INFORMATION

QUESTIONNAIRE

RIGHT TO LIFE

Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).

Strongly Agree

Taxpayer funds should not go to any organization or function which violates the conscience of any individual taxpayer.

I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.

Agree

There should be strict provisions to guard against any situation in which such treatment is "suggested" to patients or in which patients are "encouraged" to request it.

Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?

According to the consciences of the parents concerned and their physicians.

ECONOMY

Redistribution of income is needed to lessen the gap between the wealthy and working classes.

Disagree

Many government programs serve to increase the gap between the wealthy and the working classes through various subsidies, monopoly enforcements, and tax breaks to corporations. I would prefer to work to lessen the gap by ending government programs which increase it.

The government should cut spending in order to reduce the national debt.

Strongly Agree

I would begin by addressing the spending which is not only wasteful, but which causes long term harm, that being the military budget and the stationing of US forces abroad.

What changes, if any, should be made to the tax code?

The income tax system is a degrading insult to every American. My goal as a libertarian will be its abolition. The first steps towards that end will include a radical simplification of the paperwork and filing process. At the same time taxation of income should be eliminated for the lower one third income bracket of the population, along with any requirement to file. Such an income taxation system as might remain during a transition period must not be used to manipulate behavior through “tax incentives.” We must also ban use of the system to punish or reward citizens for their personal beliefs or political activities. Most importantly, during the transition to eventual abolition, no citizen should be compelled to contribute to any government program which is in violation of the citizen’s conscience.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

Religious liberty is at risk in the United States and deserves the highest level of protection in the law.

Neutral

I believe it deserves the highest protection of the law but disagree that it is at risk.

Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.

Disagree

I chose "Disagree" over "Strongly Disagree" because I would not want an essential service provided by a monopoly supplier to be affected. An electric or water utility managed by members of one religion should not have the right or power to refuse service to the buildings owned by a rival religion.

What should be the relationship between the church and the state?

The two should be as separate as possible. We have guidance from the First Amendment to the Constitution, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;"

HEALTHCARE

Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?

Any entity, public or private, can require vaccinations for those who enter the premises as long as no one is compelled to enter those premises.

What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D)Tax-payer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be de-funded.

C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary.

NATIONAL SECURITY

With regard to America's foreign policy, which view most closely resembles yours: A) The United States should intervene whenever freedom is threatened. B) The United States should selectively help countries trying to grow democracy and fight tyranny. C) The United States has become too involved in others' policies and should remain focused on issues regarding our own sovereignty unless in imminent danger. D) The United States should stay out of foreign conflicts completely.

D) The United States should stay out of foreign conflicts completely.

I support the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement to pressure Israel to withdraw from occupied territories, remove the separation barrier in the West Bank, allow full equality for Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel, and promote the rights of Palestinian refugees.

Strongly Agree

I do not want government involvement with or support for BDS, nor do I accept government preventing support for BDS as is the case with many state governments currently. I interpret "sanctions" as being a private matter and would not support government sanctions. Citizens can make their own choices as to who they wish to support or not support abroad. It is not the role of government to choose friends or enemies for its citizens.

The Chinese Communist Party poses serious military, cyber security, intellectual property, and global economic threats to the United States.

Neutral

My college major was Far Eastern Relations. I studied Chinese reading dispatches and propaganda material from both sides of the civil war between the Communists and Nationalists in China and the crises between the rival regimes which followed. Current discourse in the US has elements of truth mixed with distortion and falsehood serving the purposes of the military industrial complex. The above listed threats to the US from China mirror the threats to China from the US. De-escalate tensions.

What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of Islamic terrorism?

The United States should stop creating the conditions in which such terrorism thrives. End subsidies to all regimes in the region, with no exception. End weapons sales to all regimes in the region, with no exceptions. Withdraw military forces from all nations in the region, with no exceptions. End all efforts, overt or clandestine, to either support or overthrow any regime in the region, with no exceptions.

IMMIGRATION

The U.S. should do more to physically secure the southern border.

Strongly Disagree

Irregular border crossings are consequences of bad drug laws and bad immigration policies. End those. Tear down portions of the wall that have been erected already.

State and federal funds shall be denied to any public or private entity, such as a sanctuary city, that is not in compliance with immigration laws.

Strongly Disagree

I applaud public and private entities which take principled stands in favor of immigrants with irregular status and do not wish to see them punished. However I should note that I am also not enthusiastic about any public or private entity becoming dependent on state or Federal funds so I also could "Strongly Agree" in answer to the question. As it is aimed against immigrants and those who welcome them I answered "Strongly Disagree."

Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?

We must recognize that immigrants bring talent and energy to our country. Our attitude towards immigrants must be one of tolerance, compassion, and gratitude for what they bring. A first step will be to simplify the process for legal immigration and get rid of the bureaucratic maze which they face now. All immigrants should be self-supporting or under the financial sponsorship of private citizens or organizations. To the extent that there is fear of immigrants “going on welfare” the quarrel is with the welfare system, and not the immigrants. As for so called “illegal aliens” I harbor no indignation about the commission of victimless crimes. Many immigrants are “illegal” by virtue of obscure bureaucratic technicalities. Others are here as refugees from deadly situations and could not afford the time or expense of the legal process. We must put simple procedures in place to formalize the status of undocumented residents and allow them to participate fully in our economy and our legal system.

VALUES

Sexual orientation and gender identity should be protected classes in non-discrimination laws.

Choose not to answer

The subject is more complex than the question implies and I am not qualified to answer at this time.

I agree with Critical Race Theory (CRT) which asserts that the institutions in the United States are fundamentally racist.

Choose not to answer

I disagree with the premise of the question and the definition of Critical Race Theory contained therein. Institutional racism has existed and does exist and we should study its origins and understand where it manifests itself. The reaction to CRT by sectors of society who have read nothing about it remind me of an eccentric neighbor obsessing about chupacabras.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I was raised in the evangelical Christian tradition by American missionaries serving in Jordan where I was exposed to and studied the origins of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. My path has taken me into exploring the positive traditions of those religions as well as the Buddhism of Thich Nhat Hanh. My life is committed to observing and examining the causes of war with a goal of its abolition. Short of that I try to pick up and repair some of the pieces of our broken world. I hope I am at least harmless.

ELECTIONS AND VOTING

People should be able to vote without photo identification.

Disagree

What laws would you propose to change present voting practices?

I am not informed enough on this subject to propose laws.

EQUALITY

Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.

Strongly Disagree

In theory I could support the concept. However practically it would increase racial divisions and make racial identity an obsession. The bureaucratic process of determining which people are descended from those who suffered from an original injustice (as opposed to recent immigrants), and which people are descended from a race benefitting from the original injustice (again as opposed to recent immigrants) and which people are descended from both communities would be a bureaucratic nightmare.

Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?

Yes. An escalation of resentments and the nursing of grudges between races and religions is a clear prelude to potential civil war. I have been present before, during, or after civil wars in Rwanda, Congo, Mozambique, Chad, South Sudan, Lebanon, Jordan, and Cambodia. Suffice it to say we do not want a society where people are executing each other on the street on the basis of racial or religious identity.

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

I support the use of hydraulic fracking to extract oil and natural gas resources.

Disagree

We need to address our energy needs without violating Mother Earth more than we have already.

Which comes closest to your view? A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost.

B. Protecting the environment is a legitimate national defense issue.

ABOUT YOU

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?

Choose not to answer

I am a Libertarian and operate outside of those labels, which in any case have fluid and inconsistent definitions.

Please provide publicly available information, including interviews and media reports, validating your answer to the previous question (other than your website).

My life is the life of a libertarian and all who know me know that.

Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized in either civil or criminal court for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.

No

What else would you like voters to know about you, including your legislative priorities?

I am part of the libertarian movement working for a government which will be smaller and leave you alone. My priorities will be to end the poorly considered interventions, invasions, and military operations overseas.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY

Police officers should be personally immune from prosecution for conduct consistent with departmental policy (qualified immunity) while on duty.

Strongly Disagree

When departmental policy lends itself to enabling criminal conduct, the authors of the policy should also be liable for prosecution.

I support redirecting funds from police departments to mental health and community programs.

Neutral

It all depends on the police department, its existing budget and practices, and the mental health community programs and their existing budgets and practices.

2ND AMENDMENT

What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?

I have a dim view on restrictions but support draconian punishments on those who use weapons irresponsibly.

Victims of gun violence should be able to sue firearms dealers and manufacturers.

Neutral

There are circumstances in which this would be appropriate.
