QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?
It should be up to the pregnant person to decide up to the point of viability (that point varies but is around 22 weeks). After viability, abortion must continue to be allowed in cases when the the woman's health is in jeopardy, when fetal abnormalities make the pregnancy nonviable, and other similar limited cases when the doctor and pregnant person determine it is appropriate.
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).
Disagree
Planned Parenthood provides many important health services for men and women and should not be penalized just because it also provides abortion care. Also, poor women should not be forced to carry unwanted pregnancies due to their inability to afford abortion care.
If Roe v. Wade is overturned by the US Supreme Court, how far are you willing to go to roll back North Carolina's statutory abortion law that allows abortion up to 20 weeks?
I filed SB888 to Codify the Protections of Roe and Casey in NC.
I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.
Agree
Would you support a limitation on chemical abortion that protects women from taking abortion pills without the care and supervision of a qualified physician?
No
Medication abortion is very safe and should be less restricted in NC and should be available via telemedicine, with the option to have a qualified advanced practice nurse or physician consult as needed.
ECONOMY
The government should do more to close the gap between the working class and the wealthy.
Disagree
The wealthiest in NC pay the same income tax rate as the working poor, which is unfair. The top income levels can and should pay their fair share. NC has also not expanded Medicaid and we should. Expansion would provide financial stability to the working poor, who make too much to qualify for Medicaid without expansion but too little to qualify for ACA subsidies.
What changes, if any, should be made to the tax code?
We need a progressive tax rate to ensure those at the top income levels pay their fair share.
Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.
Neutral
I agree that college should be more affordable and that students who qualify academically should not be turned away due to inability to pay. However, the state should not offer free college tuition for wealthy families. I support our UNC System, funded with taxpayer dollars for NC families, which is a stellar system that makes our State great.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.
Agree
Businesses that offer services to the public should have to serve everyone and should not be allowed to discriminate based on their hatred for gay people or interracial couples or whatever type of person their "moral and/or religious beliefs" lead them to dislike. This is America and customers should not have to live in fear of being treated as second class citizens when walking into a restaurant, doctor's office, pharmacy, or any other business.
Under what circumstances can government close churches?
During global pandemics when all public facilities had to close to protect human health. Churches cannot be targeted for closure based on their religious affiliation.
What should be the relationship between the church and the state?
It should be separate and respectful of each other's roles. The state government should represent and be welcoming to all the citizens of the state, including those of all faiths and those of no faith.
HEALTHCARE
What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D)Tax-payer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be de-funded.
B
Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?
If a vaccination has been proven to avoid the spread of a serious disease, responsible schools and employers should require that its students and/or employees be vaccinated in order to attend that school or work there. That's what we did with the polio and MMR vaccines and we should continue to do as new diseases develop. We should not allow politicians to seed distrust in science and put people's health at risk by spreading misinformation about public health.
EDUCATION
States should allow parents to use the Opportunity Scholarship Program to fund private school for their children.
