18. What in the nature of mankind caused America’s Founders to carefully define, separate, and limit powers within the Constitution?

As people of faith, our Founders understood that mankind’s nature is tainted by the effects of sin. It was therefore necessary for them to define, separate, and limit the powers within the Constitution so that the expressions of this fallen nature would not result in the selfish, domineering exercise of power by any one individual or branch of government.

20. Should abortion be allowed under extenuating circumstances? If so, what circumstances?

No, I do not believe abortion should be practiced under any circumstances. My desire to defend the sanctity of life as a member of the Michigan Legislature represents a commitment rooted in the teachings of my Christian faith. The Scriptures affirm that God is the one who gives "life and breath and everything else" (Acts 17:25), and I believe we should promote public policies that operate to defend, rather than extinguish, the precious gifts he gives.

21. Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

According to Ephesians 2:8-9, we are “saved by grace through faith, and this is not from ourselves. It is a gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.” Consistent with this teaching, I believe that salvation is a free gift of God’s grace, offered to us because of the work of Jesus Christ on the cross. How does this belief impact my public service efforts? The verse I’ve always tried to live by is Matthew 5:16. It says, “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” Significantly, there is a very public component to the light we’ve been given. We’re supposed to let it shine “before men.” I believe that the professions we choose are simply the vehicles by which we connect to a world in need of the redeeming, restoring, renewing love of Jesus Christ. Making this kind of connection requires us to reject an approach that considers it acceptable to stay distant and detached from the needs of the public.
