OTHER INFORMATION

QUESTIONNAIRE

RIGHT TO LIFE

Human life begins at conception and deserves legal protection at every stage until natural death.

Agree

Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds or grants from federal, state, or local governments.

Strongly Agree

I support the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which requires health care providers to provide life-saving treatment for infants who survive an attempted abortion.

Strongly Agree

If the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, North Carolina should repeal its law allowing abortion up to 20 weeks of pregnancy.

Agree

Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?

If Roe v Wade is overturned and we have no abortion law in NC, I will vote for a bill to limit abortion to rape, incest, and to preserve the life of the Mother because we can get that bill passed and override the Governors veto.

ECONOMY

It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has a livable income.

Disagree

Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.

Strongly Agree

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

Governments should not discriminate against individuals, organizations or small businesses because of their belief that marriage is only a union of one man and one woman.

Agree

Governments should define marriage as between one man and one woman; no other definition of marriage should be legalized or supported with taxpayer or public funds.

Agree

Religious liberty is at risk in the United States and deserves the highest level of protection in the law.

Strongly Agree

I promise to protect the freedom of Christians to share the Gospel and to practice Biblical principles.

Yes

What does "separation of church and state" mean to you?

It is better to look at what the first amendment actually says. It prevents Congress from legislating a national church or required citizens to follow a state religion. It equates free exercise of religion and free speech and protects both. In short: Religion of the citizens is protected from government; government is not protected from the citizens who freely express their opinions and beliefs.

HEALTHCARE

It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has health insurance.

Disagree

How would you promote healthcare coverage that is adequate, affordable and accessible for all?

The best healthcare plan is provided by a good job. Improving our education in NC combined with our pro-growth economic policies will allow more people to qualify for good jobs. Healthcare affordability is made much worse by the over regulation of healthcare. Expansion of tele-health and tele-medicine will allow the system to treat more people at lower costs. Currently, Doctors are only paid if you come to their office. Remote sensors which work with smart phones along with video calls allow significant opportunities to improve diagnoses and treatment if we'll just pay the Doctor to do it. The Affordable Care Act was an well meaning attempt to expand coverage which was poorly crafted. The parts that have been declared unconstitutional mean a complete overhaul is required as the current system is unsustainable and does not provide a path to cover all. This will require a lot of bi-partisan effort.

NATIONAL SECURITY

The best way to maintain peace is through a strong military.

Strongly Agree

IMMIGRATION

I am in favor of construction of a wall and other necessary infrastructure on our border that gives complete control over entering and exiting the United States.

Agree

State, sheriff and local law enforcement agencies should be required to participate in the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) 287(g) Program to enhance the safety and security of their communities to identify and detain aliens.

Strongly Agree

Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?

People who properly apply for immigration and follow the law. They should be of good character with clean records. The actual standards are set by US law, not State law, and the State should conform Federal Law

EDUCATION

Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.

Disagree

VALUES

Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality which is necessary for our system of limited government.

Agree

I support adding sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression as protected classes in non-discrimination laws.

Disagree

I support allowing public high school students to participate in athletic competition based on the gender with which they identify instead of biological sex.

Strongly Disagree

Parents should have the right to know what schools are teaching their children about sex and LGBT issues and should have the right to opt their children out of any instruction to which they object.

Strongly Agree

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I am an Evangelical Christian.

ABOUT YOU

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and immigration, which of the following best describes you overall?

Conservative

Please provide publicly available information validating your answer to the previous question.

My voting record can be found at www.ncleg.gov. I have consistently voted to reduce taxes, simplify regulations, expand school choice, fund education, protect religious education, protect families and I vote pro-life. Conservative Women for America, North Carolina Chapter have made me a honorary member for my work protecting women and families; the only male member in recent memory. The Human Trafficking Commission named me Legislator of the Year for my work protecting and rescuing women and children from being trafficked for sex.

What education or experience qualifies you to hold the office for which you seek election?

I served in Raleigh for eight years and became one of the policy leaders in the legislature. Many of my bills received overwhelming bi-partisan support as they were good policy for all of North Carolina. In four years on the Matthews Town Council I learned about the problems of cities. In 12 years on the Mecklenburg Park Commission I learned about programs for youth, seniors, people with special needs, and how to provide safe recreation for everyone. In the United States Army I learned leadership and how precious is our country and our liberty.

Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.

no

Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?

From 1973 to 1979 I was a single parent. I had sole care and custody of my daughter Carol who had just turned two. It was very rare for Dads to get custody of young children. I believed that I would be the better parent. It was difficult to work and go to school and raise her. There were no female relatives near so I had to learn how to do many of the things Moms traditionally do. I am grateful for that opportunity and know that my entire life since flowed from that decision. Carol is a gift. That experience gives me a different perspective into caring for and raising children that most men don't have. I remarried in 1979 and now have four grown children. My wife and I have just celebrated our 41st wedding anniversary.

JUDICIAL PHILOSOPHY

I support the use of Sharia law as a basis for legislation and judicial decisions in the United States.

Strongly Disagree

2ND AMENDMENT

Should teachers be allowed to carry guns at school?

Yes

What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?

Existing law should be sufficient if enforced.

OTHER IMPORTANT ISSUES

People should be able to vote without photo identification.

Strongly Disagree

I support the legalization of recreational marijuana.

Disagree

The Electoral College should be abolished.

Strongly Disagree

In priority order, what three areas of legislation do you propose to author or sponsor if elected?

Continue the reform of our State tax system which has lowered the burden on everyone while reducing the share of taxes paid by the lowest wage earners. Continue to improve education in NC by: 1) Increasing Parental Educational Choice, 2) Expanding opportunity scholarships, 3) Supporting home school,4) allowing parental notice and opt out rules for controversial topics being taught, 5) Continue to increase funding for education and insure that all teachers are able to teach without fear in orderly and safe schools and live a life of dignity and respect with fair pay 6) Expand charter schools. Improve public safety by: 1) Increasing the penalty for felons who illegally own and carry concealed weapons to insure jail time, 2) Require bonds before release in cases of death, violence or sexual assault, 3) Require cooperation with federal law enforcement by state and local law enforcement agencies.
