15. What in the nature of mankind caused America’s Founders to carefully define, separate, and limit powers within the Constitution?
We have learned by sad experience that it is the nature and disposition of almost all men, as soon as they obtain political authority, to begin to exercise influence beyond that approved by the people. Thus, the carefully defined, separate and limited powers in our Constitution are designed to protect against mankind's tendency to exercise excessive dominion.
16. Briefly list three (3) political or legislative issues of most concern to you, and explain why each is important to you.
As contained in my Contract with Eastern Washington, I will focus on the following thee issues when elected: 1. Healthcare. Health care prices are increasing at an unsustainable pace, and Obamacare makes matters worse, not better. For 20 years I have helped employers provide healthcare, and I want to use my expertise to create a sustainable and workable solution for America. 2. Federal budget. $1.2 Trillion in new debt each year is outrageous. It is unethical to burden future generations with such tremendous debt. My legal expertise managing healthcare and retirement costs will allow me to achieve savings in the 50% (and rising) portion of the federal budget that is devoted to healthcare and retirement spending. 3. Defend the Constitution. The government has become lawless, and I have the courage and expertise to stand up and defend our rights as identified in the Constitution, for future generations.
17. Should abortion be allowed under extenuating circumstances? If so, what circumstances?
The only possible extenuating circumstances when abortion does not shock the conscience are where: 1. Pregnancy resulted from forcible rape or incest. 2. A competent physician determines that the life or health of the mother is in serious jeopardy. 3. A competent physician determines that the fetus has severe defects that will not allow the baby to survive beyond birth. Even these exceptions do not justify abortion automatically. Abortion is a most serious matter and should be considered only after the persons responsible have fully considered its consequences.
18. 19. Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I am a Christian who believes in the saving atonement of Jesus Christ provided by His grace. I believe that God exists, and that he answers prayers. I pray for guidance in my life, particularly where important decisions are required. In addition to prayer, I read the scriptures daily to maintain a solid level of personal spirituality. I attend church each week with my family, and I share my testimony of the Savior and His Gospel with my children and others on a regular basis.
