The founders sought to create a weak national government as evidenced by the Articles of Confederation in effect prior to adoption of the Constitution. They were concerned that a strong national government would take power away from the states and be used to oppress the people. By creating three branches of Federal government, and limiting the power of those branches, they were trying to ensure that no branch would come to dominate the others.

19. Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
While the phrase "separation between church and state" does not appear in the Constitution, this term coined by Jefferson, has been referenced by the Supreme Court on at least 25 different occasions and is a fundamental principle of American democracy. I do not believe that a discussion of a candidates personal spiritual beliefs have a legitimate place in the electoral process unless they specifically affect the positions a candidates takes on particular issues.
