14. What in the nature of mankind caused America’s Founders to carefully define, separate, and limit powers within the Constitution?
The ambition and self-interest of people. They established a federal system with separation of powers to set ambition against ambition and self-interest against self-interest to make significant, far-reaching changes difficult to accomplish. Madison and others feared the tyranny of the majority as much as the ineptness of the Continental Congress under the Articles of Confederation.
15. Briefly list three (3) political or legislative issues of most concern to you, and explain why each is important to you.
National Debt: without controlling spending, we are destined for national insignificance and control by foreign lenders and our children and grandchildren will never have the opportunities my generation has had to achieve the American Dream. Social Security: Many people have worked hard, paid their Social Security contributions and rely or will rely on receiving the promised retirement benefit to survive. The federal government must honor this obligation which will require a change in how the overall retirement system is structured. This restructuring need not extend the retirement age or increase taxes. Healthcare: Obamacare is a cure worse than the disease. The unintended consequences of job loss, coverage termination, premium increases and more severely impede the economic growth necessary to create jobs and reduce budget deficits. Affordable healthcare for all is a worth goal, just not this way. There are other equally effective, less destructive ways.
16. Should abortion be allowed under extenuating circumstances? If so, what circumstances?
I too believe in the sanctity of life. I also believe strongly that no woman should ever have to make the choice whether to have an abortion, that everything should be done to help her avoid that decision, that she should have all the information necessary before making that decision, and that she should have alternatives to choosing an abortion such as adoption of any child born. Most Pro-Life organization would allow abortion if the life of the mother is at risk. Many would also allow it for rape or incest. If the choice is between the mother’s life or the fetus, the mother’s life is more important. The same for rape or incest, but some women still choose to die for their fetus, or to keep a child conceived in rape or incest. That is her choice. Thus, the issue is really about when a woman can make her own choice about what is more important. As a man and elected official, I do not believe I can make that decision for any woman, except when the fetus is viable.

My values are Christian as I was raised and believe: charity, compassion, forgiveness. I believe in living by the golden rule, and I always have and will. My personal relationship with God is private, and none of anyone's business.
